Reviews for Running on Faith: Season One, Part One

I enjoyed the ending. Things have been a little 'different.' And I thought the "Alternate Universe son" thing was funny. I enjoy reading these stories each one makes me laugh, and the fight scenes are cool.

Author's Response: When did time travel happen? That seemed like the kind of thing Buffy would say. I’m glad I keep you laughing at the jokes and excited by the action. Thanks for reviewing.

I love the inventive fight scenes, and the fact that Buffy isn't the all time hero in each and every one of them. Connor is really coming into his own. I really feel that his character has grown into such a well rounded and complex one. I really love this story. The comment about Spike not being Rhett Butler was hilarious. I laughed so hard imagining the two of them on the plantation... And the rising music and the rising...err no! Spike seems to be just about ready to figure things out. Can't wait till he does! Since Buffy knows the big news... I feel bad that Connor and Spikes relationship is going sour. It was bound to happen though. I must read the next chapter. Addictive!

Author's Response: Thanks, as always, for your reviews. They are really uplifting. Connor is my favorite character, so I’m glad you like how I’m developing. I think he’s always been well-rounded and complex, but I want Connor 2.0 to be just as interesting and complex. Spike is putting the pieces together re: Connor’s identity. And yes, Connor’s fling will cost him a lot emotionally.

So, Connor version 2.1 is clearly quite bad ass. Using a metal door as a weapon has got to be one of the coolest things anyone's ever done in a fight. I like the Faith/Dana/Connor dynamic. Dana can see her own suffering in Faith. Connor can see his own in Dana. Connor letting Dana beat him down without fighting back shows that not giving up really is a line he won't cross. I also liked Faith's comfort with Buffy letting Dana kill McHenry. It seems more natural that the former Rogue slayer would still be morally flexible. You definitely showed you have deep insight into Spike and Dru. Spike's line "Dru sees things that others can’t” shows that Dru is more than a nut and Spike really understands her. But you definitely nailed how observant Spike is. Connor getting sad at the mention of Riley and Buffy squeezing Connor's hand is all it takes for Spike to put together that they had sex. Brilliant! Connor coming clean with Buffy was so great (and so sexy before he did). Buffy's reaction was priceless. Best line of the chapter? Faith says she has Connor and Spike's back. Buffy says " Then they have nothing to worry about."

Author's Response: Connor 2.1 is indeed a badass. I'm glad you liked the dynamics. I'm trying to phase out old conflicts (i.e. Buffy/Faith) and work in new ones (the Dana situation and varying opinions over it, Spike distursting Connor, etc.)

Faith's response to Dana is great. She wants to help Dana, but doesn't want to fail. Lots of pressure on her to do the right thing. And Dana pummeling Connor? Whoa. I loved it that Connor blurted out when Buffy got close to him about being Angel's son. You think he would have kept his mouth shut for at least a little while longer. It seemed to be the right time. And Spike now knows. You feel kind of sorry for him because of all of his feelings towards Buffy.

Author's Response: In this series, I really wanted to create the kinds of personal relationships and tension that made the show so great. As you can see by now, Connor and Buffy wasn’t so much about Connor and Buffy, but to create conflict between Connor and Spike. I thought Connor letting Dana pummel him was a pretty powerful moment. What he was saying to her was something I think “broken” Connor needed to hear. So Connor knew that Dana needed to hear it too. Connor had sex with Buffy the first time because he was drunk and horny. This time, he knew it was very, very wrong and would definitely upset Angel. Plus, he was to some extent deceiving Buffy by withholding that information. When he and Buffy were about to hook up again, he felt that, morally, he had to tell her who he was. Faith too has a tie to Dana. And yes, she doesn't want to fail her.

DO NOT READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE SPOILED!!!!! The Connor and Dana moments are extremely insightful. Most would miss the connection these two have, but not filmtheory. Connor is aware of this connection even if no one else is. Connor's growth in this scene where he allows Dana to beat him without beating her back, reminds me of a similar moment that happened on ATS where Cordy risked her life to help cleanse Connor of his hatred that still surrounded him after his return to our dimension. Dana's connection to Faith is understood by both slayers as they have shared some of the past savagery, though Dana's to a level far exceeding Faith's. However one could argue that Dana's was the less sinful as hers came not by choice as Faith's had, but by circumstances beyond her control. This past episode explored those issues further, keeping the water a murky gray as the Buffyverse always intended. In this chapter I was reminded of one of the reasons I fell in love with these shows, nothing is black and white. And there is no true good or all encompassing evil, this series sticks to this inherent Whedonesque philosophy.

Author's Response: Thanks. I was kind of worried about this story because it's the first in a while without a cliffhanger that centers on physical danger. Also, trying to stay true to the show is really important to me. I'm glad the Faith/Dana parallel is obvious and the Connor/Dana parallel is subtle. I was kind of hoping that was something people would notice. Luckily, I have smart and insightful readers like you.
