At first, I was wondering WTF was going on in the first part of this chapter. I hadn't caught on that this was Connor's future that Lorne was seeing. Illyria is finally the bad guy in the future? I was hoping that she wouldn't be, but it fits. I really hate the way Angel treats Lorne. Would he treat the rest of his old gang the same way? It seems that he still goes off the deep end when it comes to his son. Someone needs to slap him silly. He calls these people his family, and he treats them terribly. Wes, Cordy, Gunn, they all suffered because of him. The tragically flawed hero. OK, I'll quit harping on Angel's faults. But you do it well. The scene between Faith and Spike is hot. That is exactly what they would do. Too bad Willow interrupted them.

Author's Response: I was actually hoping people would be all "WTF?" at the first part. I just wanted to rip the story out of where it was and confuse the hell out of everyone with this battle scene that totally didn't seem to fit. Yeah, Angel's a bit of a bastard to Lorne. Then again, as you noted, he's pretty crappy to his whole "family." I'd even argue that his treatment of Connor throughout season 4 was unfair and pretty much brought about all that happened. But that's a debate for another time. So happy you liked the hot Spike/ Faith scene. I'll try to work in some more in the future if I can.

Go, Willow, go. She gets in on the action now. Is Dru really that stupid? Oh, wait, she showed back up pretty quickly. Faith, California? Too funny. Faith's internal dialogue about the Mayor is great. She's so torn between her feelings towards him and her need to kill him. Such a hard choice for her.

Author's Response: I always thought that more mileage could be gotten out of the Faith/ Mayor dynamic. But I thought the only way to really do that was to bring the mayor back. Thus, the Risen One. Glad you like Faith, California.

Brunette, brain-washing bitches, Oh, you slut. Such great lines. I love it when a writer just lets it go and comes up with these. Also, for some reason, chapter 14 is cut off at the bottom. Why doesn't Angel just snap Eve's neck? I guess the evil you know, is better than the ones you don't.

Author's Response: Damn! The cool cliffhanger endiong is cut off! Well, that's fixed now. But sorry. Glad you liked the funny lines.

Dru wanting to have a child just like Darla? Boy she really isn't that insane as people say she is. Power is what she wants. It's funny that Connor still loves Cordy. And Angel showing up with that kind of statement at the end of the chapter? I love it.

Author's Response: Yeah, I think Angel's appearance is cool, too. Dru is whacked in the head, but now we know a) why she’s there and b) why she’s after Connor. Well, that and the family ties.

Faith's response to Dana is great. She wants to help Dana, but doesn't want to fail. Lots of pressure on her to do the right thing. And Dana pummeling Connor? Whoa. I loved it that Connor blurted out when Buffy got close to him about being Angel's son. You think he would have kept his mouth shut for at least a little while longer. It seemed to be the right time. And Spike now knows. You feel kind of sorry for him because of all of his feelings towards Buffy.

Author's Response: In this series, I really wanted to create the kinds of personal relationships and tension that made the show so great. As you can see by now, Connor and Buffy wasn’t so much about Connor and Buffy, but to create conflict between Connor and Spike. I thought Connor letting Dana pummel him was a pretty powerful moment. What he was saying to her was something I think “broken” Connor needed to hear. So Connor knew that Dana needed to hear it too. Connor had sex with Buffy the first time because he was drunk and horny. This time, he knew it was very, very wrong and would definitely upset Angel. Plus, he was to some extent deceiving Buffy by withholding that information. When he and Buffy were about to hook up again, he felt that, morally, he had to tell her who he was. Faith too has a tie to Dana. And yes, she doesn't want to fail her.

Wood chairs? I always wondered why vampires even had them around. Not very smart. The fight banter between Spike/Buffy/Faith is really good. I'm not sure why exactly Dru is there. Did she sense something? Did someone call her there? Did you just throw her in to be a thorn in the gang's side? She's always a good thorn. And she sees all, which is always good.

Author's Response: Dru is there for a very specific reason, as will be shown in future episodes.

Connor flirting? That was so cute. He may be able to teach his dad a few things. Keep the sexual tension up between Faith and Spike. Dana appearing? Ingenious. And her watcher. What a sleaze. Connor can relate to her, which made a good comparison.

Author's Response: As I've said before, I wanted New Connor to be anti-Connor. Buffy's ready for a guy who's too clingy. But he's a horny bastard who's been to college. He's not unfamiliar with the one-time hook up. I obviously thought Dana would be a nice addition. Her watcher, yeah, complete scumbag. I wanted to do more with the theme that the watchers are just overwhelmed with the number of new slayers. Connor can definitely relate to Dana. I’m happy I managed to highlight their similarities well.

OK, so you know from my e-mail that I wasn't too keen on the Buffy/Connor thing. I'm still not, but re-reading it in the context of the story, it does fit. They are both intoxicated, Buffy actually closed her eyes so she didn't have to look at him, etc. And I still do believe Faith's motto about getting horny after fighting. Buffy feels it too sometimes. So was Connor just a convenience? That was my take on it. The sexual banter between Faith and Spike though is so great. They seem so suited to each other. And you know that Spike will notice what Connor did as soon as he smells him. Angel would probably go ballistic. Nicely written love scene though, no matter who the characters were. ANd I think that Faith would never touch Connor because he's just manly enough. Her style is the rough and ready type, like Spike. I just wished that Wes hadn't been killed, because he would have spiced this whole fic up something fierce. Daggone it.

Author's Response: The Buffy/Connor thing was kind of meant to provoke a reaction. Strangely enough, it's been polarizing. A lot of people seemed to like it, which is actually disappointing to me. So far as Spike goes, the sense of smell is one thing, but don’t forget how insightful Spike can be. Nice to know the sex scene was written well.

The baby thing and the rescue, whoa. Kind of made me shudder. Also, you knew that Buffy still had feelings for Riley back in the sixth season. So she would totally do this. Riley is safe to her. You know that they have to stop, but on some level, you don't want them to because Buffy really needs someone at that moment. Really well played. The funniest line though was "Slayer Search and Rescue" or something like that. Great line.

Author's Response: Thanks! I'm so happy the baby thing was too, too over-the-top. Also, thanks for the "Really well played" on Buffy and Riley.

This has probably one of the greatest break-out scenes from the police that I have ever seen. Connor is such a smart guy. And to bring Angel in was terrific. Someone really needs to snap Eve's neck. She was doing it to help Angel. To help Angel die, because I'm sure she knows that Angel was responsible for his dying.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review! Yeah, Connor version 2.0 is pretty smart, huh? I thought it would be neat to play him against type, as future chapters may show. Yeah, Eve's still evil.

Ethan Rayne? I would think that Buffy wouldn't trust that guy as far as she could throw him. But he's always good to use in a betrayal sort of way. He's never loyal to anyone but himself.

Author's Response: Buffy doesn't trust Ethan Rayne. But as has ahappened several times on the show, she needs him.

crayonbreaky gal 10/10/04 - 03:47PM 5: Episode 5: Heartland and Homeland Signed
You really don't give them a break, do you? The byplay between Buffy and Dawn is typical. Poor Dawn is suffering, and it seems to me that Buffy is only half-listening. Which is exactly what she would do. Is that the wrong interpretation? And I like the fact that you haven't made Riley into the bad guy or Captain Cardboard in this fic. He did contribute on the series. Faith goodness also. The nuthouse? No way she'd stay in there for long. I like that you updated her situation.

Author's Response: No, no breaks. You definitely have the right intepretattion. Buffy's very much tied up in her own concerns and Dawn is upset about something Buffy had to get past a long time ago. I tried hard to make Riley a bit more complex than he was on the show.

crayonbreaky gal 10/10/04 - 03:43PM 4: Episode 4: Failed Transport Signed
Buffy mad at Spike for losing Dawn is so classic. I still don't think she realizes that Dawn is a grown woman now. And Spike as usual takes it from her. More Spike and Connor banter. In some ways, it's better than Angel/Spike banter because of there not being all that baggage. And scene with Amy and Dawn though I think is the best part of this chapter. Since Dawn has learned so much from her sister and all her friends, she held up quite well and was able to do what she had to do. You really make us feel sorry for her.

Author's Response: I really wanted the Buffy/Dawn dynamic to come off that way; Buffy not realizing Danw's a woman who can take care of herself. And after the Amy scene, we see that she definitley can do just that. I really liked writing the Spike and Connor banter, so it's nice to know you're enjoying it.

crayonbreaky gal 10/10/04 - 03:39PM 3: Episode 3: Everybody’s Got an Angle Signed
Car chase on top of jumping out of an airplane, on top of everything else. And Spike goodness. You really capture him in this chapter. Just enough snarkiness, but not over the top. I hate it when authors do that, because you do get tired of it after a while. And I like it that Dawn escapes from Amy. She's grown up now, so let's give her a chance to prove herself, and you did. Bad guys still rule. And the introduction of Eve? Very well done. Although I still do not like her, but not in a bad way, but in a way of please kill her off at some point. Well, maybe she does serve some kind of purpose. You always have to have an evil lawyer around to stir things up.

Author's Response: I really worked on my action sequences and villains, so I'm especially happy that they "still rule." I agree that Dawn is groing up. She'll continue to do so throughout the series. Thanks for saying I got Spike's snarkiness just right.

crayonbreaky gal 10/10/04 - 03:34PM 2: Episode 2: Trial Separation Signed
Quippy Connor? Love it. And Dawn just plays right into it too. I am just so glad that you didn't have Faith and Connor as a pair. I'd rather see another character pair up with her, but not Connor. I would love to see a Connor/Dawn pairing at some point down the line (maybe in your sequel). Everyone got their clocks cleaned in this chapter. Those bad guys you have created are great too.

Author's Response: I'm happy you're liking Quippy Connor. He's a fun character to write. I thought about a Faith/ Connor pairing and it actually seemed too bland a pairing for my tastes.
