Reviews for Running on Faith, Season One

Strange Bint 04/15/05 - 03:08PM 1: Pilot: Goodbye Boston Signed
Yay! I finally figured out how to submit a review! There are things about this I just love, like Ethan mentioning Dawn was a fairy during Holloween, that could be a whole seperate AU fic! I figured out who the risen one is and I'm really tempted to skip ahead to see how...Well, I don't want to give it away. Anyway, I totally believe Buffy could freak out and sleep with Connor because she feels bad, and I believe she could want Rhiely to devote attention to her. But, I dunno if Rhiely rejecting her would make her that upset. She'd have to be down about some other big thing too and Rhiley would be the kicker. But, it's still a great twist, and Buffy's reaction to Connor/Cordy was great. Looking foward to more.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review. Someone is actually writing a pre-season 5 Dawn fic. But I too like throwing in hints as to where Dawn fits in memory. Glad you figured out who the Risen One is. How isn’t that complicated. Riley rejecting Buffy wasn’t the only thing that was upsetting her, but it was certainly emblematic of the problem. Hope you keep reading.

i just finished reading the whole thing and wow. I couldn't sleep @ night not knowing wat would happen. I'm working on Running on Faith;Season Two, but since there are only 11 chapters so far, I'm taking it nice and slow. But this is really good, good style of writing and you can really get into their heads. So good job. You are now one of my favorite writers.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review! I'm glad I kept you on edge. I'm heavily influenced by Dumas' *Three Musketeers* serials (and the show "24"), so I always want to end chapters with these cliffhangers that leave readers wanting to know what happens next. I'm glad I'm doing an okay job of that. Thanks for saying I'm one of your favorite writers. taht means a lot to me!

Selene 03/25/05 - 10:27PM 22: Episode 22: You Call This a Finale? Signed
Please let the Dawn/Connor relationship grow. I really feel like they might be good for one another. I know you don't really go for convetional ships but this one feels right. I LOVE that Lorne unleashed on Angel. Very valid points that needed to be said by someone that had been with Angel from the days of AI to Wolfram & Hart. Dawn has matured into a facinating part of this new team you have going. I love the Faith Dawn dynamic.Connor playing tag and not knowing the game was heartbreaking. Getting them back on track and Angel taking the hard road is such a foreign experience for him. I can't wait to start reading Season 2. I am really glad that I found this story and thank you for sharing.

Author's Response: You’ll have to read next season if you want to see what comes of Dawn and Connor. Lorne told Angel a lot of things that Angel should have been told a long time ago. Thanks for mentioning Dawn’s maturing. I always thought Dawn was portrayed as too bratty on the show. Then I remembered that she was actually pretty young. So, why not show her growing up. Not *grown* up, but *growing*. Faith, as someone who is also not seen the way she’d liked to be, understands Dawn’s need to have her growth acknowledged. I thought it’d be neat to throw out yet another reminder that Connor’s childhood was not normal and that he’s very deeply scarred by that. Thank you so much for reading the story and sharing your thoughts with me. It means more than I can express.

Selene 03/25/05 - 10:00PM 21: Episode 21: I Shanshu, You Shanshu, He Done Been Shanshued Signed
I love the fact that Faith is a loyal friend to Angel. He was always there for her in the past and I feel that he was a very important person to her. Very in character. Your explanation of the shanshu is fantastic. It is so perfect. The dangling carrot has been taken away from Angel and Spike and I love it. To tell the truth I don't really want either of them to become human. It would spoil my reading fun! :D Faith was handeled perfectly in questioning Spike on how he was hoilding up. Not too emotional but her concern came through loud and clear. Great work balancing on the line of emotional and sappy. (You definately do NOT fall into the sappy catagory.) It is very hard to convey emotions like that. Great work!

Author's Response: It’s Faith’s story, so I figured I’d show off her more positive attributes, such as the loyalty to Angel. I’m glad you liked my Shanshu. I think the show actually kind of hinted at it in the finale. Connor says W&H will kill Angel, and Angel tells him “As long as you’re alright, they can’t.” Most people only achieve immortality through their children. I think Angel achieved mortality/ humanity through his son. That’s why he had no problem signing away the Shanshu. It’d already happened. Just my 2 cents. Thanks so much for all your reviews!

Selene 03/25/05 - 09:29PM 20: Episode 20: Growing Up Signed
Wow Buffy is a harda** in this chapter. I know that she can be cold but she is going no holds barred on Connor. Spaith is of the good. I like them together. I loved the stand off between Buffy and Faith. Great work illuminating Faith's need to compare herself to Buffy and making her feel, for once, that she measured up.

Author's Response: Yep, Buffy is a hard ass. I'm definitely planning to toy around with Spaith some more. But I want to get you guys to beg first. For the longest time, i've been wondering where I could take faith that she hasn't already been. I think making her finally feel she's every bit the slayer Buffy is might be the way to go.

Selene 03/25/05 - 09:10PM 19: Episode 19: Feral Signed
The fight scene between Angel and Connor couldn't have been done any better. You have made me love Connor in a way that the show never could. I never disliked him but he was just there... He is such rich material in your hands and I can't wait to see where you are going to take this. Spike is catching on to Angel's evasive answers... I knew he would. I love this Connor too. His protectiveness toward Dana is touching.I must read on...

Author's Response: I've been waiting a long time for a good Angel/ Connor fight, so I'm glad my version paid off. I've always had a deep sympathy for Connor, so I'm glad I could portray him in that kind of light. Connor would naturally be drawn to Dana. they're both "damaged." It's different then being tempted to evil by anger or power. Hopefullyi won't diappoint you with where the story's going. Thanks for reaidng and reviewing.

Selene 03/25/05 - 08:43PM 18: Episode 18: Funhouse Signed
I love the fact that Willow had to repeatedly cast a sleep spell on Dana. (Like pepper spray supposedly has no effect on unstable people) It is your attention to these little details that make me so engrossed by your story. You just don't throw punches and stop the conflict with violence. You have so much thought into your fight scenes and complex plot ideas that make me love this story. Everything build upon itself. The mansion is such a brilliant place to bring all of the characters to face their fears. The scene between Connor and Angel was so intense. Connor "said" so many of the things that had bothered me about AtS season 5. Vail's office scene was so good. Very chilling. I loved it. The ending *gah* Torture! That was the mother of all cliffhangers. This chapter completely rocked! Yay!

Author's Response: Yep, Dana is a special girl. I’m glad you like the emotional violence. The best pain on Buffy came from words and actions, not fists. It’s easier for someone you love to hurt you than someone you hate. Someone you hate has to *try* to hurt you. Someone you love can do it without even realizing it. I’m glad you thought the chapter rocked. This was one of my favorite cliffhangers as well.

Selene 03/18/05 - 10:54PM 17: Episode 17: Baggage, Ghosts, and Destiny Signed
I really like that you have Connor questioning Angel about what he had Lorne do to Lindsey. That action reinforces the extent to which Angel is willing to go. As Angel not Angelus. I like the dark side that Angel has. Lorne and Eve are a great combination. Both characters have a strong sense of self preservation and a general ambivalence toward good and evil. They mix well. Very funny banter. Speaking of very funny banter... Angel and Spike together was fantastic. Spike needles him like no other. I really LOVE your idea on how to help Dana. Very inventive and so much better than Willow's usual problem solving routine of just erasing the memory. Dawn and Connor's talk was a great addition. It really show's how bad Connor feels about what happened between him and Buffy. What and EVIL cliffhanger!

Author's Response: Angel as Angel has a very dark side that’s much like Wesley’s. It’s the do-what-must-be-done side that acknowledges that, sometimes, good guys are going to die. Lorne and Eve are a great odd couple. I thought the idea of how to help Dana would be neat. It’s a kind of therapy that could actually repair the damage, rather than just bury it. Maybe it could work on some other people as well. Hmmm . . . Poor Connor. His indiscretion with Buffy has not only caused a slight rift between him and his dad, but also with Dawn, who could’ve been a good fit for him. Ah, well. Sorry about the evil cliffhanger, but how else can I keep you reading?

Selene 03/18/05 - 10:28PM 16: Episode 16: Clothes, Destiny, and Other Things You Strip Signed
When I started this chapter I was like huh? I went back to the last chapter and reminded myself that it was Lorne and it must be what he is reading. (That's what I get for having to take a break during this story and come back to it!) I love your depiction of Illyria. The action is intense. Connor's willingness to sacrifice the men fighting under him for the greater good... I such a telling moment for him. I love the fact that you are showing the side that survived in Quar-toth. Lorne's reading is much more detailed that what he normally gets. I love the fact you are sharing it. I'm trying to remember a time where they showed how Lorne does a reading on AtS and I really can't think of an example?! The insight that you give to Lorne makes him much more interesting. The fight between Angle and Lorne is perfect! I am glad that Lorne spoke up against Angel's wishes and told him what he felt even though it wasn't what Angel wanted to hear. I love the chat between Faith and Lorne. Revealing the fact that Faith killed The Mayor so subtly is very cool. Action Faith is what we are familiar with. The quiet thoughtful Faith is what I want to know more about. I love action Faith too! But I like seeing another side of her too. Damn! No Spaith? I'm am seriously loving this story! What the heck is Lorne up to now?

Author's Response: I really wanted to throw people for a loop with that first part, so thanks for the “huh?” I thought it’d be great to have a big battle scene that seemed totally out of place. The part of Connor that survived Quar’Toth is an important factor in his character. You’ll see more of it. Thanks for the comment on Faith killing the Mayor. Most people didn’t like how I handled that. Lorne is up to something. Other than that, no comment.

Selene 03/16/05 - 10:33PM 15: Episode 15: All Around Me Are Familiar Faces Signed
I really like the fact that the Mayor was brought into this story. Faith has such a hard decision before her now. I love the "Crush" that Dawn has on Connor and the fact that he heard it all. Very good idea. Angel's dry humor while being tortured was so on. I could practically hear him saying the words. Willow to the rescue was awesome. I love the wat you have her use her powers. Very impressive. Angel and Dawn's interaction was great. You worked in the fact that she never really cared for him much. Explaining whether or not he remembered her at all... Since he was gone when the spell for the key was past. You are my hero ! Lorne? Yay! I love the fact that he didn't want to see Angel. Another great oment between father and son too. The reference to shanshu being like watching Connor grow older was sooo good. Angle IS living again through his son... I really love this series. Everything is so well thought out and deliberate. The characters went through so much in one chapter. Very emotive and wonderful. Great work!

Author's Response: The Mayor was a big part of Faith, for better or worse. I felt like he belonged in the story. However, I didn’t want to just throw him in. “*Poof* the Mayor’s back!” doesn’t work for me. Thus, the Risen One. I figure if I put enough effort into bringing the old guy back, the readers would be more likely to go along with it. You touched on a theme I play with very heavily later in season one. I don’t want to go into it now, but kudos to you for noticing. I’m so lucky to have such perceptive readers. Thanks for the reviews! I can’t tell you what a high they give me.

Selene 03/14/05 - 08:38PM 13: Episode 13: The Killer Dees Signed
Dru was such a great adition to this chapter. Connor is by far my favorite character. I'm also happy to have more of Willow in this chapter. I love the fact that Dru used her thrall to get Connor to be with her. It was such a heartbreaking scene to bring back Cordelia in such a way. Poor Connor. I LOVE the fact that Spike knows! Great Chapter!

Author's Response: Thanks as always for the review. Dru is always great for causing havoc. I’m glad Connor’s your favorite character. It’s a well know secret that he’s mine. Just as Dru is always good for havoc, Will is always good for . . . well . . . willowness. I’m so glad you enjoyed the chapter.

Selene 03/14/05 - 06:58PM 12: Episode 12: Relations, Family and Otherwise Signed
I love the inventive fight scenes, and the fact that Buffy isn't the all time hero in each and every one of them. Connor is really coming into his own. I really feel that his character has grown into such a well rounded and complex one. I really love this story. The comment about Spike not being Rhett Butler was hilarious. I laughed so hard imagining the two of them on the plantation... And the rising music and the rising...err no! Spike seems to be just about ready to figure things out. Can't wait till he does! Since Buffy knows the big news... I feel bad that Connor and Spikes relationship is going sour. It was bound to happen though. I must read the next chapter. Addictive!

Author's Response: Thanks, as always, for your reviews. They are really uplifting. Connor is my favorite character, so I’m glad you like how I’m developing. I think he’s always been well-rounded and complex, but I want Connor 2.0 to be just as interesting and complex. Spike is putting the pieces together re: Connor’s identity. And yes, Connor’s fling will cost him a lot emotionally.

Selene 03/14/05 - 06:40PM 11: Episode 11: Stalkers Signed
Dru? *happy dance* I love the fact that you brought her into this story line. It should add an interesting dynamic within the group. The banter between the four of them is done so beautifully. The action sequences are so fluid. I love the currency the vampires are playing poker with. Nice touch. And Dru is written perfectly with imagery and symbolism in every word she utters. I love the Connor's snarky comments during the Vamp fight. Great work!

Author's Response: Thanks as always for the review. I love Dru, too! But I brought her in for a reason and she has a specific goal. I think too many write her as being completely crazy, but I wanted to have those touches of truth that Dru always had in her ravings. Thanks for your comments on the banter. I really want Faith, Spike, Connor, and Dawn to have the same kind of dynamic the scoobie gang did. I also appreciate your comments on the action sequences. I really love writing those. Thanks so much for the review!

Selene 03/13/05 - 03:21PM 10: Episode 10: Across the Lines Signed
The Connor cover up was great. I am really liking the Spaith over tones. Can't wait to see what is going to happen. This story is so interesting. You characters have such conflicting emotions and are rich and complex. I really love your style of writing. Buffy and Connors talk on the bus really was so on target. Connor's flirting isn't bothering me at all anymore. I guess I am over my shock, huh? Must read more!

Author's Response: Yep, this Connor is quick on his feet with the covering up. The Spaith overtones will continue on and off for a while. Those poor, doomed kids. I took a screenwriting class and learned that writing is all about conflict. I try to have conflict on many levels, so internal conflict is a given. I’m glad you’re over your shock. Writing flirtatious Connor is pretty fun. I’m glad you’re enjoying my writing. Thanks so much for the reviews! They really make my day.

Selene 03/13/05 - 03:10PM 9: Episode 9: Departures (from the norm) Signed
Okay. I am completely freaked out by this pairing. I am not flaming (I hope) I just thought that after what had happened between Connor and Cordelia might have left a lasting impression on Connor. He seemed to be wanting to have a better relationship with Angel. This is not the way towards it. I can see how it could have happened but I get a eeeewww feeling. Especially after Buffy just came on to Riley in the plane. I can't wait to see what the fall out is going to be from this episode. And the Spike smell thing is going to out it pretty quick. Over all the chapter was funny and the conversations were written so well. Very in character. I am wondering when Spike is going to put two and two together and figure out who Connor really is... Great work and can I commend you on being truley brave!

Author's Response: LOL- I’m glad someone was finally freaked out. Most of the reviews I’ve received for this have been surprisingly positive. Yes, Connor is trying to build a better relationship with dad. However, from Connor’s pov, Cordelia was the love of dad’s life. He doesn’t know how serious Buffy was. Add that to him being drunk, lonely, and with the only people in the world who understand his gifts, Connor did a bad, bad thing. And he knows it. Sorry you got an Ewww feeling. I’ve always felt bad for Connor. No matter who he hooks up with (except for one very, very boring pairing), someone gets an ewwww feeling. But I’ve also felt there’s always been a double standard with that. Angel can be 240 and Buffy 16 and that’s okay. Spike can be 150 (and soulless) and Buffy 21, and that’s okay. But if an 18 year-old guy has sex with someone only a handful of years older than him, everyone gets squicked. Buffy coming onto Riley on the plane (and being rejected) was a reason that this happened, not a reason why it shouldn’t have (plotwise). Buffy was lonely and wanted to feel desirable. Thanks for the review and for commending me on my bravery. Please don’t worry about being flamy. First of all, you weren’t. Second, I can handle it if you did. Besides, I really, really want readers to share what they’re thinking not only for me, but for other readers as well. Also, thanks again for the review. It's always appreciated!
