Reviews for Running on Faith, Season One

Kevin 09/08/04 - 12:33AM 1: Pilot: Goodbye Boston Signed
I read this story after seeing your reviews for Angeldove. Can I just say WOW! Wow did that rock. This was an awesome, awesome story. It was a great as a stand alone, yet set relationships and conflicts that could easily fuel a long series. I’m skeptical that you can keep up this pace. If you can . . . Wow!

Author's Response: I deeply appreciate your feedback. Thanks for leaving it. I’m glad you like the story so far. I too hope I can keep up the pace and, of course, your interest.

Angeldove 09/05/04 - 12:43AM 15: Episode 15: All Around Me Are Familiar Faces Signed
All I have to say, is the following excerpt epitomizes what I love about this fic. It has great action, without the too often one dimensionality of most action fics I've read. Few fics capture such great exposition, action or otherwise. Seriously, I got teary eyed! Just Wow! Their whole relationship was about time after all. Time borrowed, time stolen, time rewritten even. Angel had all the time in the world. His son’s time was running out. It moved along at the same pace as everyone else’s life, Angel supposed. But for him, for Angel, that time seemed so fleeting. Fifty years could pass in the blink of an eye. Shanshu Angel laughed to himself. So this was living.

Author's Response: I’m really glad you liked the character interactions and internal monologues. I’m especially pleased you liked this excerpt so much. Hopefully it’ll become obvious why in future chapters.

I'm really enjoying the Dawn/Connor interaction. The love/hate, sexual-tension-masked-by-irrational-anger aspect is perfect character writing for these two. This is something I should have explored in my own fic, however since I failed to do so, I am especially glad I have the chance to experience it through yours. And I am really interested in where this Willow/Dawn interaction is leading….this was unexpected, and the unexpected is what the Buffyverse is all about.

Author's Response: I'm glad you like the Dawn moments with Willow and Connor. I too am wondering where Dawn’s conversation with Willow is going. I have a feeling about it. If you want, you can e-mail me about it. I just don’t want to get spoilery here.

Angeldove 08/05/04 - 12:37PM 1: Signed
So…Dru and Eve, have to say I didn't see that coming. Then there is Faith and the Mayor, also an interesting twist to the plotline. I enjoyed getting more Angel/Connor, Angel/Spike interaction. I especially liked where the episode ended with Angel, as I look forward to seeing him confronted with the reality of the past he seems to be running from? Yes, that's me hinting for spoilers again.

Author's Response: When you say you didn't see Dru and Eve coming, was that in a good way or a bad way? To satiate your lust for spoilers, I will tell you Angel will soon deal with the past from which he’s running. But not just yet.

Angeldove 07/24/04 - 06:11PM 13: Episode 13: The Killer Dees Signed
First of all I have to say, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING LEAVING A CLIFFHANGER LIKE THAT? I've decided you're evil, that can be the only logical conclusion. I loved the Dru/Connor interaction. I also liked how you used both the original mythology from BTVS and ATS during the Dru/Connor scene at the end. It's spun in a new way of course, but has the substance of history tethering it to the buffyverse.

Author's Response: I’m glad you like my melding old Buffy mythology in. Dru is definitely one of the most under-used characters in the Buffyverse. But she’s powerful and ambitions. It would make sense that she would want to use what power she could of Connor’s to potentially destroy or dominate the world. I’m also glad you loved/hated the cliffhanger. But then again, it’s not completely a cliffhanger. It’s kind of like your ending to chapter 12 of Secrets Exposed. It’s all out there. Now we just want to see the fallout.

Angeldove 07/22/04 - 10:07PM 12: Episode 12: Relations, Family and Otherwise Signed
DO NOT READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE SPOILED!!!!! The Connor and Dana moments are extremely insightful. Most would miss the connection these two have, but not filmtheory. Connor is aware of this connection even if no one else is. Connor's growth in this scene where he allows Dana to beat him without beating her back, reminds me of a similar moment that happened on ATS where Cordy risked her life to help cleanse Connor of his hatred that still surrounded him after his return to our dimension. Dana's connection to Faith is understood by both slayers as they have shared some of the past savagery, though Dana's to a level far exceeding Faith's. However one could argue that Dana's was the less sinful as hers came not by choice as Faith's had, but by circumstances beyond her control. This past episode explored those issues further, keeping the water a murky gray as the Buffyverse always intended. In this chapter I was reminded of one of the reasons I fell in love with these shows, nothing is black and white. And there is no true good or all encompassing evil, this series sticks to this inherent Whedonesque philosophy.

Author's Response: Thanks. I was kind of worried about this story because it's the first in a while without a cliffhanger that centers on physical danger. Also, trying to stay true to the show is really important to me. I'm glad the Faith/Dana parallel is obvious and the Connor/Dana parallel is subtle. I was kind of hoping that was something people would notice. Luckily, I have smart and insightful readers like you.

Angeldove 07/19/04 - 11:25PM 11: Episode 11: Stalkers Signed
I have always considered Dru the hardest character to write. And I have seen many fail at it. You are not one of them. This could easily be the best Dru writing I've seen. I especially enjoyed this line: “I see, now. She’s not a doll at all. She’s a toy soldier. Boys like toys such as you. Is that why my boy seeks you?” Absolutely wonderful. Oh, and I am once again, anxiously awaiting the next chapter…"Where is the father!" has to be you're best cliffhanger ending yet.

Author's Response: I agree writing Dru can be difficult. Most people write her as flat out crazy. Even on the show, Spike, who knows her better than anyone, says she's crazy. But Dru isn't detached from reality. She simply perceives it differently than everyone around her. While some people look at an object and see its shape or size, she sees its history and its purpose. Others see a person's physical attributes; their hair color, eye color, the appearance of their face. She sees their history, their purpose, and their emotional state. Thanks again for the review.

Without saying too much in the way of spoilers; another great episode. The Faith break-out was great and I loved the cameo of Angel. I just have a special place in my heart for the now healthy father – son bond they have. I therefore greatly enjoyed Angel's parting line: "It was a good plan, son" seriously, I just got teary eyed again, typing it. The plot continued to move forward at a good pace, and ended with me wanting more.

Author's Response: Thanks! I always try to end it with the reader wanting more. I'm also glad you liked "It was a good plan, son."

Angeldove 07/15/04 - 01:58AM 8: Episode 8: Can We Just Pretend Signed
OMFG – You shocked the hell out of me with the Buffy/Riley moment. I of course sensed a tension, and assumed that it would stay just that, tension. I was in no way prepared for what happened. But I don't want to make it sound as if it came out of left-field without substance to back it up. Buffy spent her life fighting and then trying to escape this demon world she has now been thrown back into. Therefore it makes sense that Buffy would cling to the one piece of normality that she had in her tumultuous past. The title of the episode says it all. And of course I am happy with the Dawn resolution thus far, though I assume there is more story to tell where she is concerned, in the future. Great ep!

Author's Response: There is more Dawn story, yes. I’m glad Buffy and Riley’s moment was shocking, yet still had a firm foundation. I didn’t spend a lot of time with them because, in this story, they’re tertiary characters. Besides, much of their story has already been told. I’ve tried with little success to make my titles as witty and multi-layers as the show’s were. Although “Can We Pretend” was kind of obvious, I’m glad it was at least relevant.

Angeldove 07/15/04 - 01:58AM 10: Episode 10: Across the Lines Signed
Forgot to mention, I loved the dialogue between Connor and Buffy about 'the other night' you get a sense that he understands that it 'was what it was,' but then at the same time he continues flirting with her, and then bringing up her sexual past as examples of precedent. What really intrigued me and threw me for a loop (a good one) was Buffy's feelings regarding Connor and that they are not as black and white as she has believe and had led us to believe until the end of this story. You get an immediate sense from Buffy that she feels this has been one big mistake, but then she does what Buffy does. She starts reconsidering as soon as she feels Connor may not be infatuated with her anymore, thus more continuation to the craziness that is Buffy and men. Great insight into her character.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review! I thought the Buffy/ Connor fallout would go in the most original direction if Happy Connor knew the difference between true love and a one-night stand. He is in college after all. Hook ups can’t be alien to him. I think that also added a level of coolness (as in a cool, calm demeanor) that Buffy appreciated. He flirted with her because she’s still hot. Those things combine to create conflicted Buffy when it comes to Connor. Glad that readers can buy that.

Angeldove 07/15/04 - 01:18AM 9: Episode 9: Departures (from the norm) Signed
OK, So I feel kinda stupid because I missed that teenage-horney-drunken-fratboy, element of Connor that would do this. It is completely in character for him to do this and think about the consequences later, if at all. But I stand by the rest of my review, this chapter was funny and shocking as hell.

Author's Response: The hook up was meant to drive people nuts. I, like Joss, love giving fans what they don’t want, yet still keep them hanging on.

eerie_ave 07/14/04 - 11:45PM 4: Episode 4: Failed Transport Signed
I suppose the title should have given it away, but I could have sworn they were going to bust Faith out. This was yet another electrifying ending. I could still use more Faith. But I have faith that Faith is coming. Does that make sense?

Author's Response: It makes sense and she is. Does that make sense? I'm definitely trying to pull the story more toward Faith but have developed an unexpected problem. A lot of Faith’s issues were somewhat resolved on the show. That’s not to say they shouldn’t still bug her, but I don’t want to retread old ground. Meanwhile, other characters do have old problems to wrap up. This isn’t a great excuse for Faith’s absence as I’ve successfully created issues for other people. In short, I promise I’ll get Faith back in the game.

eerie_ave 07/14/04 - 11:40PM 3: Episode 3: Everybody’s Got an Angle Signed
In retrospect, it’s hard to believe how important this episode is. You reintroduce Eve in an interesting way and give birth to the Spike & Connor dynamic. I would have liked a little more of Faith, even though her story isn’t as action oriented.

Author's Response: Glad you like how Eve got worked in. The Spike & Connor dynamic will be in flux for most of the season, so I'm glad they interest you.

eerie_ave 07/14/04 - 11:37PM 2: Episode 2: Trial Separation Signed
This is awesome. The beginning was interesting and the ending intense. It had a cliffhanger that made me glad so glad the next chapter was already up. I wanted to review this before, but didn’t quite have enough context. The first chapter was mostly stand-alone. This chapter was the birth of your exquisite and excruciating style of always leaving me on the edge of my seat.

Author's Response: Glad to see I have ou on the edge of your seat. I hope to keep that going.

Angeldove 07/14/04 - 11:12PM 10: Episode 10: Across the Lines Signed
This chapter added a few new great elements. I loved the addition of Dana to the story. I did however have a hard time handling the choice Buffy made about Dana in reference to the watcher (trying again not to spoil) I thought it would definitely be something Connor would do, however I just wasn't feeling that from Buffy. I will have to say that I did like the dialogue from Buffy, concerning killing bad people, and that ii is those that do the killing that are the most negatively affected by it. That rang very true in the tradition of the Fred/Gunn ATS situation. Looking forward to more!

Author's Response: I figured Buffy's decision would bring rebuffs (no pun intended). I may go back and throw in one or two sentences about what was specifically going on in her head to try to make it a little easier to swallow.
