Amti Island (Part 4)

The Scooby Doo gang gathered in the living room, minus Cordelia.

“I’ve done some research after overhearing some of Josh’s story last night. The details are still murky, but trouble is on its way... er… well is and always has been here.”

“Well vampires that couldn’t be staked was probably a clue there…”, Xander interrupted.

“Yes I know” Giles continued. “ It seems that the vampires we saw last night were the legendary ‘Ooh-shia’ ( if I pronounced it correctly) vampires, who appeared on earth during the Dark Ages.”

“But I thought the Dark Ages were just a time when the Fall of Rome led to unorganized societies.” Said Willow.

“That’s what ‘historians’ want you to think…” Angel said.

‘Hmm... History was never my major.” said Oz.

“It’s very rare to see these vampires because they disappeared around 150 years ago. They appear in bands and they are kind of like the collectors of knowledge in vampirism. It was very strange that they would attack like they did last night…”

“Vampires… that’s what they do… the ones without souls at least”, Buffy added that after seeing a hurt look on Angel’s face.

“However, That’s just it! Upon more research, this is what I have complied. The original Ooh-shia vampire, Mara, was said to be a human of many good deeds, she was innocently killed caught in the middle of a vampires gang fight in her village. Her death… er life is an extraordinary though. She risked her life for her brother who, at that time, became a vampire in secret. However, knowing that her brother had become a vampire, Mara tried to reverse the effect with simple chemistry. Her bond with her brother surpassed the vampire in him and he hadn’t hurt her since becoming a vampire. That night at the gang war, she was stabbed while protecting her brother. The attacker fled quickly and Mara was left to die. Mara asked her brother to do one thing for her, she asked him to drain her and give her a quick death. Her brother hesitated, but seeing the pain that she was in, he accepted her last request. As Mara’s brother drained the blood out of her… Mara became a vampire. This was because there were many types of vampire blood at the tip of the sword that stabbed her. Somehow, being drained by a vampire and mixing with assorted types of vampire blood made her a vampire with humanity.”

Josh said, “ That’s very complicated, but isn’t that a lot like Angel…like who has a soul?”

“Well not quite. Mara didn’t have a soul per say. However, she was able to overpower the urges and later, it evolved into a gene in a vampire that made them neutral. They were both not on the side of evil, and not on the side of good. There after, everyone who was bitten and turned into a vampire by Mara became a neutral vampire. Then some years later, Mara and her husband (who she turned into an Ooh-shia) decided to create an underground society for collect knowledge for the world as they knew it and a shelter to hurt demons, and demons who have lost their way. This society was not only made of Ooh-shia vampires, but there were also the ones who helped this dream of Mara’s come true. This society consisted of good witches, demons and people who owed their life to Mara and Liam ( her husband) one time in their life or another. This society became referred to as the ‘Powers That Be’.

“Oh! I’ve heard of that somewhere in the Craft!” Willow exclaimed. “They are suppose to be the ones who control or have contact with Fate and Destiny and stuff like that. I only read about them briefly, but I know they are totally powerful.”

“I have found little on the Powers that Be. Willow, could you help me find some more on them since it’s your area of expertise?”

“Sure!” Willow said.

“So how does all this tie into the vampires that attacked us earlier?” Buffy asked.

“I’ll try to make it short. Mara and Liam retired from the PTB and resided to an island. I suspect it is Amti Island… Upon leaving, there was much debate and fighting on who was the deserving member of the PTB. Corruption was about, and the Ooh-shia members secretly hired vampires and demons to off other members of the society. When Mara saw this, she banished her remaining Ooh-shia disciples to another realm and left her responsibilities a close friend of hers and left. That’s the last of the entries known of Mara the Ooh-shia vampire. I have a feeling that the Ooh-shia members who were attacking us were most likely the ones who escaped from the realm and came to seek out revenge towards Mara.”

“This makes all the sense now!” Angel exclaimed. The others were confused. He tried to explain. “Ok, so Mara and her husband probably had children before they were killed say in the Dark Ages and Mara made her husband and children into Ooh-shia. So, when Mara retired they came here…”

“And… they were secluded because of the vampire factor!” said Buffy.

“Yeah, and when Josh told us that ghost story last night about the limbs and all…”

“Didn’t need to be reminded.” Xander muttered.

“ That was probably the result of an attack from the disgruntled Ooh-shia members. Remember last night, the only way we killed them was by chopping them up? Well that was it!”

“Poor Mara and her family.” Willow said lost in her own train of thoughts.

“ But I think one of them managed to escape. Josh, you said something about 7 of the 8 children dying right? So one must be still out there! Maybe they can tell us what happened and stop the people on the island.”

“Good plan, Willow and Oz see if you can find something on our previous tenants and some more on the Powers that Be. Oh and if you can pull up a map of this island, it would be great. Xander and Josh come help me unload ammunition from the boat…”

“Never leave home without it.” Xander said.

“Wait, ammunition???” Buffy exclaimed. “Way to go Giles! Um… Angel and I will…”

“ Scout but keep out of trouble…” Giles finished her sentence.

“Yes… with precaution…” Buffy said annoyed. Then she added “ That’s what we do best!”

“Um… Buffy it’s daylight…” Angel hinted.

“Oh right, well I guess we’ll just go scouting later.”

Angel eased up.

“Oh Xander would you take Cordelia with you two, I just can’t stand it to have her around…” Giles shouted after Xander and Josh.

“By the way where is Cordelia?” Buffy wondered.

“I haven’t seen her this morning…” Willow said.

“Josh? Have you?” Buffy asked.

“I thought I would let her sleep in. I didn’t know want to wake her, you know how she gets in the morning…” Josh said.

Everyone looked at him funny. Then he added “I called her once…really early… not exactly a fun experience.”

“Oh.” They all said in unison.

“I’ll go get her if you want.” Josh offered.

“ No I will, might as well.” Buffy said as she headed up the stairs.

Buffy went up the stairs and found Cordelia’s room, the only one with the door closed. She knocked. No answer. * Oh she must be still sleeping.* Buffy thought. She shouted “Cordy!! It’s morning! Wake up now!” Buffy wonder where she heard THAT before. Still no answer came from Cordelia’s room. Buffy decided to go in, the door wasn’t locked. As she went in, she found a note and Cordelia gone.

“Cordelia isn’t in her room” Buffy said coming down the stairs.

“Well she wasn’t with any of us this morning…” Willow remarked.

“Where could she be?” Giles said concerned.

“But I did find this…” Buffy handed the note to Giles.

The note read: Time does not matter.

“What does it mean? And what does this have to do with Cordelia?” Buffy demanded.

“I’m not sure but it looks like a…” Giles paused.

“Yes it does.” Angel said absently.
