Angel's Secrets

Buffy Dislikers

Updated 5/13/00

On this page, Angel fans get a chance to vent their dislike of Buffy.

My name's Esther and I just thought I'd send a mail stating how much of an uber-bitch Buffy is towards Angel. Can you say 'shallow much'? The episode 'Sanctuary' is showing this Friday in London (on Sky 1) so I'll be able to see what everyone else has been saying. But, after reading the reviews, I can see that she has become a selfish, self-centered, hurtful, stupid, egotistical and just plain horrible girl - she was much more mature in Season 2! Here's hoping that this chapter will be closed now when Angel goes to Sunnydale and faces off with that cornfed farmboy riley (hate him, too), and that Angel finally finds someone else to make him smile (that actress Rebecca came awfully close..)

Thanks to Chrystal for allowing me send this mail and vent - I'll probably be back after seeing the ep up close and personal!

I think Buffy is being totally unreasonable and really stupid. I mean Riley? Give me a break. What the hell is up with her anyway? Riley is a total idiot. Even when Angel was a rat-eating bum, he still had some brains. And even at his very stupidest, he has more brains than ten Rileys. I'm really disappointed in Joss Whedon's choice for Buffy's new love interest. Riley is so lame. I mean chemistry-wise, Buffy would have more chemistry with a carrot.

And how rediculous of her to tell Angel she never trusted him. I mean all he ever did was for her even when he was Angelus. I'm still mourning over their love affair. Even though I'm mad at Buffy, I can't stand it that they are with anyone else but each other. It's obvious Angel still loves her. Even though she lied and said she'd always be his girl.

I don't like Kate that much. She's kind of the Riley counterpart, just a really boring character. Now, that female lawyer is kind of cool. I totally agree with you, if she would just switch her loyalties to Angel instead of Wolfram&Hart, things could be pretty interesting with those two.

Just dropping you a line to say how much I agree with you about Buffy. BITCH! Pathetic, whiny, shallow, self-obsessed, bratty, immature, spoilt and completely living up to her nickname of Slutty the Vampire Slayer. Ahem. I can't think of any more bad things to say about her at the moment (they'll come to me next time I watch her on the show).

Well, I'm not quite as mad at Buffy as I thought I'd be after "The Yoko Factor", but she still has a long ways to go, so here's my two cents on how this once-brilliant character has completely NOT improved this season.

Love interests. Yes, I'm a radical Buffy/Angel shipper, so I'll take care of this burning issue right off the bat. First off, Buffy began the season by jumping into bed with a guy she had known for all of one week, and then when he treated their liason casually (duh!) she moped around for several episodes. Anyone would think this girl had never seen true love before! How could anyone who had been loved with a love that survived Hell fall for a counterfeit so easily? How could any intelligent late-twentieth-century woman think that a one-night-stand is a sign of committment? Didn't her mother ever tell her about the free milk and the cow?

And then, who should show up to mend Buffy's broken heart but Riley Finn. Ultra-wholesome Iowa farm boy with the IQ of a balogna sandwich. The man was part of an evil Initiative for who knows how long without ever having a clue as to their real purpose. He took their "vitamins" unsuspectingly and then acted all shocked and shaken when he found out they were steroids. Good grief, even the swim team guys in "Go Fish" knew they were being drugged. And then, Riley Finn tries to rescue Oz in "New Moon Rising". I give him credit for good intentions, but only the heir to the throne of the kingdom of idiots would do such a lousy job of sneaking a hot new "hostile" out of a video-surveillanced facility. Riley has been working at this place forever, and he doesn't even know how to escape from it? Where's the faked orders, the smuggled uniform, the disabled alarm system, the diversion, the split-second timing? No, he just takes Oz out without even the barest hint of subtlety or planning, and got himself captured in about 10 seconds.

What makes this so frustrating is comparing Angel. The man can walk into an art gallery and immediately turn himself into the curator, speaking French with a perfect accent, telling amusing anecdotes about the painter and his friends. He can walk into an evil lawfirm, with suit and briefcase, talk shop with one of the lawyers and get into the offices. He can look at a rough sketch of a piece of art and identify it. He speaks Latin, French, Russian, Italian, Romanian, Spanish, and Korean and who knows how many other languages. We've seen the man reading two books at once. He listens to classical music on a Victrola. In other words, he's got some serious brains under that adorable spiky hair of his. How can Buffy be so happy with Riley Finn, brainless soldier extraordinaire?

Well, she could be happy if she herself underwent some serious intelligence reduction. She hasn't been Buffy the vampire slayer this season, she's been Buffy the Initiative tagalong. What the blazes did she quit the Watcher's Council for if not to stop taking orders? She has been pursuing an all-sex no-talk relationship with Riley... after all those beautiful conversations with Angel, it's enough to make you weep. To top it off, she's letting Spike run around loose. Sure, he can't bite, but he's still evil. How can she get on Angel's case about Faith when she's giving Spike the run of Sunnydale? Don't get me wrong, I adore Spike, but Buffy hasn't been behaving very intelligently with respect to him. If I were she, I'd keep him locked up. In my room. (Her sense of aesthetics is notably decreased as well if she thinks Riley "can I have a side of bland with that bland" is cute after Angel's intense gorgeousness, or next to Spike's wickedly cool good looks.) And worse than her brainlessness is her nastiness. I don't care how much Angel hurt her when he left; the fact remains that she sent him to Hell. It sounds completely shallow for her to whine about him "tormenting" her after what she put him through. I recognize that it was necessary, but she made no rescue attempt, and even picked up a new boyfriend. The bottom line is, Angel has suffered the worst, and she has no right to whine at him. Buffy called Angel a "bad boy" midway through season 4, contrasting him to Riley. Well, that is an abuse of the English language if ever I heard one. Angel is a good man. He's good enough to forgive Faith and try and help save her soul. And as the result of his gentleness and understanding, Faith turned herself in to the cops, thereby saving Angel's life. The important fact is that she did this of her own free will. She wasn't forced into it. That makes it *her* redemption. But Buffy was too full of her own wounded vanity (because Faith, while in her body, slept with Riley who couldn't even tell the difference) to care about the bigger issues. Angel showed more nobility than she, and she just couldn't take it.

Telling Angel that what she and Riley have is new because she knows and trusts him was downright evil. Too much has been sacrificed to her love for Angel for her to belittle it. If she didn't know or trust him then he lost his soul for a lie, and Jenny Calendar died for nothing. And Buffy didn't apologize for this. I think that's why Angel said the following hour that he would never have love or a family. Buffy has hurt him, *again*. How much torture does he have to undergo to satisfy her?

Buffy's constant whining about "moving on" is incredibly self-centered. "Let's see how fast we can forget Angel" has been her motto this season. I didn't notice Angel being very forgetful of Buffy in "Beauty and the Beasts", once he got his bearings. Does she have any clue what an amazing thing it is to be remembered after a thousand years of torture? How can she want to forget?

There is some hope that she will come to her senses. When Angel professed his dislike of Riley her response was "Thank you", which is hardly the response of a besotted lover. She left Riley alone to talk with Angel. But she's still clinging to her "normal" boyfriend, so she's got a ways to go. It's time she recognized the infinite inferiority that is Riley Finn.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about a new love interest for Angel. I don't like Kate, Lilah Morgan or Jhiera much; I'm thinking someone more warm at heart would be better for Angel. And, even if the curse is out of the way, Angel did say Buffy was the only woman he'd loved in 245 years, and I don't want him turning shallow. On the other hand, he deserves better than what Buffy has become. The person who belittled him in "Sanctuary" is not the sweet, open-hearted girl he fell in love with. Why should such a wonderful man suffer so much?
