"The Magic Bullet"
![]() It's a sunny day in L.A. and everyone is happy, smiling,
being kind to each other. A guy pulls his car to a stop and with a
smile, gestures the pedestrians to go ahead and cross. As he's waiting
for them to pass, something hits the side of his car with a thud.
It's Fred with Wes and Gunn chasing her on foot.
![]() Fred continues running down the street. Wes and Gunn pull up, realizing they've lost her. Gunn isn't happy about it. Wes assures him they'll find her. Gunn says they'll do more than that. Wes sees a young woman a short distance away. She has long brunette hair and Fred's jacket. He directs Gunn to the woman, figuring he's spotted Fred. They run after the woman. ![]() Gunn grabs the woman by the arm but when she turns around to face them, they see it's not Fred. Wes asks about the jacket. ![]() The woman answers someone gave it to her and told her Jasmine wanted her to have it. She smiles and gushes about how "sweet" that is and how Jasmine is the "best." Wes agrees Jasmine is "wonderful." ![]() Gunn suggests they split up, figuring Fred couldn't have gotten too far. They take off running in opposite directions. Fred hides in a sewer tunnel. She waits a moment then runs on down the tunnel. ![]() People continue to stream into the already crowded Hyperion. Lorne turns people away at the reception desk. A man approaches the desk and asks if he's too late for a room. Lorne confirms he is, saying everything is booked, including the "mouse holes." He points out there are people pitching tents in the parking lot. ![]() The guy lays a key ring on the desk and offers Lorne his house if Lorne will let him stay. He says it's a nice place, it has a pool. ![]() Lorne slides the keys back toward the man saying it doesn't work like that, Jasmine doesn't want his things and neither does Lorne. The guy looks around the crowded lobby and tells Lorne he just wanted to be close to Jasmine. He'd seen her on the news the night before and he wanted to thank her for making him feel -- He starts sobbing. ![]() Lorne assures him he knows the feeling, "I thought Our Lady of the Perpetual Sea Breeze was the real deal until the Divine Ms. J. walked right through that door and into my ass." The guy gives him a confused look in response to that. Lorne quickly adds, "Which is where my heart is ... physiologically." The guy continues giving him a puzzled look. Lorne offers to show him an x-ray. ![]() The noise of the crowd picks up as Jasmine, accompanied by Angel and Connor, descends the stairs into the lobby. The guy at the desk turns and stares in awe. Lorne suggests he not be shy. The guy moves toward Jasmine. ![]() Jasmine reaches the base of the stairway and greets her followers. She walks up to a pregnant Chinese woman, lays her hand on the woman's belly and speaks to her in Chinese, telling her the baby will have a loving, healthy life. The woman is giddy with glee as she bows repeatedly. ![]() As Jasmine walks away from the woman, Angel asks how she does it. Jasmine notes Mandarin isn't that difficult when one has been around for "a zillion years." Angel clarifies, asking how she always knows what each person needs to hear. She says she looks "into their hearts" as she looks over the sea of smiling faces surrounding her. She adds that it's "right on their face" sometimes. ![]() ![]() She walks up to a Hispanic man and speaks to him in Spanish, telling him his mustache gives him great strength and dignity. He thanks her. Connor wishes he could see what Jasmine does. She assures him he will. Angel notes the arrival of Gunn and Wes as they come in the lobby door. Gunn shakes his head 'no' as he and Wes head to the back office. Angel asks Jasmine to excuse him and Connor as they leave and go into the back office. ![]() Angel and Connor join Wes and Gunn in the office. Angel closes the door behind them. Gunn says they were close but Fred disappeared. Angel reckons Fred has learned a few tricks working with them but he's confident they'll find her. Connor offers to track her down and "bring back her scalp." ![]() Wes reminds Connor that Jasmine wants Fred alive. Angel agrees with that, saying she gets to live until they figure out why Fred rejected Jasmine's love. ![]() Connor wonders why anyone would "reject love" Gunn says that Fred has a history of that. Angel notes whatever the reason, they have to find her so "Jasmine can straighten her out." ![]() In the lobby, Jasmine notices Angel and the others as they exit the office. She looks at a young woman with a beaming smile who is staring at her and asks the woman if she'd like to accompany her. The woman is obviously thrilled by the offer as she enthusiastically nods her head in an affirmative response. Jasmine looks over the crowd. Her eyes settle on the man who had offered Lorne his house in exchange for a room in the hotel. She invites him to accompany her as well. He anxiously accepts her offer. ![]() She directs the man and woman to follow her as she heads up the stairs. As Gunn and Wes look on from the back office doorway, Gunn asks Wes if he thinks Jasmine will ever choose them. Wes thinks it's possible, if they get "lucky," but not before they find Fred. ![]() Fred walks into a bookstore, "Magic Bullet Books." She greets the clerk who's the only one in the store. She reckons he probably wouldn't remember her. ![]() He does remember she was there three days earlier, looking for information on "mass hypnosis," wondering if it was possible. Fred nervously says she read the books, there were a lot of weird theories that all seemed flawed to her. She's seeking information on mind control that can affect everyone. The clerk thinks it over a minute then offers he may have a book on the subject. He retreats to the stacks. ![]() Fred notes the titles on some of the shelves' contents, "Astral Projections", "Satan's Dictionary". She figures the store must get some "colorful customers." ![]() The clerk says he used to but she's the only customer he's had since the last time she was in, "Not a huge demand for photo books of serial killer autopsies when you're living in a utopian wonderland." Fred admits she hadn't thought of that. She thinks it must be difficult for the guy. He wonders if she's kidding, then tells her it's "great." Fred isn't quite sure what to think. The clerk says he's never been happier. Fred sees it now, he's "practically glowy." The clerk tells her he was flipping through radio stations the night before and he ended up listening to a woman talk. ![]() Fred figures he's referring to Jasmine. He confirms that's who it was and asks, "You too, huh?" He says Jasmine is a "breath of fresh air", he listened for nearly an hour and now he's a "new man." He goes on, saying he used to be obsessed with the subject of mind control, he read everything he could find on the subject. Fred asks if he doesn't believe in it anymore. He answers that he does, he just doesn't let it concern him now. ![]() Fred asks if he no longer worries "it's possible for someone to send out a biological or electronic trigger that effectively overrides your own sense of ideals and values and replaces them with an alternative, coercive agenda that reduces you to little more than a mindless meat puppet?" The clerk responds to Fred's question with, "Wow. People used to think that I was paranoid." He tells her he still has the "implants" in his head. He thinks the C.I.A. is still listening to his thoughts but it doesn't bother him anymore, he just beams Jasmine's love back to them. Fred humors him, telling him it's a good idea. The clerk eyes her suspiciously, then tells her he gets it now. ![]() A nervous Fred asks just what he gets. ![]() The clerk says he knows what she's doing as he opens a drawer behind the counter, pulls out a handgun and lays it on the countertop. He pulls out a dog-eared booklet, "Making Mind Control Work For You", and tells Fred he figures she wants to "fight fire with fire" by spreading the word of Jasmine's love through the government. Fred plays along and agrees, that's exactly what she had in mind. She starts to take the booklet from him. He pulls it away, telling her she doesn't have to do that, they should trust that Jasmine's love will reach everyone else the same way it reached them. A disappointed Fred forces a smile and an "Oh, happy day." ![]() Angel follows Connor in the sewer, tracking Fred. Connor knows Fred has been there. Angel asks how old Connor was when he realized he had this tracking ability. Connor answers that he was "five or six." He's not sure, he didn't have birthdays in Quor-toth. He says Holtz made up a game so he could practice. Angel asks if he means that Holtz hid things for him to find. Connor admits it was kind of like that, Holtz would tie him to a tree and abandon him so he'd have to escape and find Holtz. He adds proudly that it only took him five days once. ![]() Angel is disturbed hearing that revelation, telling Connor, "That's terrible. That's --" ![]() Connor cuts him off with "Why I'm so good at tracking." He knows Fred was in the place they're now standing in the sewer tunnel, she rested there briefly. They both pause a moment, not saying anything, then both say at the same time that Jasmine wants them back at the hotel. They look at each other, smile and head out of the sewer. ![]() ![]() In her room at the hotel, Jasmine is watching her appearance on the local morning show on a laptop computer screen as Wes, Gunn and Lorne look on. She smiles, noting she sounds "like the prologue to one of those movies about magical dwarves." Gunn corrects her with, "Hobbits" and is surprised she's familiar with movies. She tells him she loves movies. Lorne says her story is the greatest story of them all. ![]() Wes slides the computer toward himself and assures Jasmine the designers will have her website ready in a couple of days, she should let him know when she wants to go online. She tells him it will be soon. Gunn wonders why she doesn't set up in a television studio and spread her message that way. She says it isn't time, she still has much to learn. ![]() Jasmine answers a knock on the door with an invitation to enter. Angel and Connor come in. Angel notes Jasmine called them. Connor wonders how that was done. Jasmine answers they're all connected. With Angel, Connor, Gunn, Wes and Lorne in the room, she wants to test the connection to find Fred. ![]() Connor points out it's what they've been trying to do. Jasmine says this is different, it's not about running around town searching for her. She forms the others into a circle with her, all holding hands. She directs the others to close their eyes and think of Fred, every detail of her. She tells them to concentrate on the details and asks, "Where are you Fred? I'm looking for you." ![]() Fred walks up to the office window of a motel and requests her key. The clerk passes it to her. As she walks toward her room, an old woman stares at her. ![]() At the hotel, Jasmine says she sees Fred. ![]() Fred walks up the steps of the motel to her room, noticing everyone around her is staring at her. She turns and heads back down the stairs as the people start to follow her. When she reaches the bottom of the stairs, the old woman grabs her by the arm. Fred pulls away from her and starts running. Jasmine tells her there's nowhere to run, "My love is all around you." As Fred leaves the motel lot, a guy pulls his car out of the parking lot and follows her. As she's running, another car stops in front of her. The driver stares at her. Fred changes direction and keeps running. On the other side of the street, a guy has the hood of his car up, working on it. ![]() ![]() Fred makes a run for the sidewalk beside the car, drawing the car from the motel parking lot in that direction. It crashes into the parked car and explodes. Fred falls to the ground. The driver of the car steps out as it's engulfed in flames. He is also on fire. He walks calmly toward Fred, reaches out to her and tells her not to be afraid. ![]() At the hotel, Jasmine starts to weaken. Connor abruptly breaks the handhold with her. Jasmine slumps, Angel catches her. He and Connor assist her to a chair. Wes asks what happened. Connor says her hand got hot. ![]() Wes notices Jasmine's hand is burned quite badly. Jasmine again assures them she'll be okay. ![]() Jasmine tells the others she saw Fred just as clearly as she can see them. She notes there are still some painful bugs in the process as she looks at her injured hand. Angel asks if Fred got away. Jasmine confirms she did, but now everybody who loves her knows what Fred looks like, knows to catch her, knows to call them. She's confident there's no place for Fred to hide. ![]() Wes asks what Jasmine wants them to do. Jasmine thinks they already know. Angel notes they have work to do, there are people at the hotel who have needs. Lorne says, "You know what they say about people who need people." ![]() Connor adds, "They're the luckiest people in the world." Everyone turns to look at Connor. Lorne asks if he's been sneaking peeks at Lorne's Streisand collection. Connor answers, "It just kinda popped out." ![]() Jasmine explains this is what she meant by everything becoming connected. It's how she saw Fred. Angel asks if they're becoming psychic. Jasmine says it's not like that. Gunn suddenly notes the hot water is out on the third floor. Wes adds there's a plumber in the lobby who can help with that. He and Gunn both look at each other, perplexed. ![]() Jasmine smiles and tells them that's what she's talking about. She says she needs to rest so she can focus on healing her burned hand. She pauses and tells them there are a couple of sisters in the lobby -- Lorne adds it's the Bailey twins. Gunn offers to ask if they'd like to come up and visit Jasmine. She smiles and tells him that's exactly what she was thinking. This is just the beginning, nobody will ever feel lonely again. ![]() ![]() Fred walks down the street. A car drives past her then comes to a screeching halt and backs toward her at full speed. The demon would like a time frame to go by, pointing out he has to go to the bathroom. Fred tells him to shut up, she's trying to work through some things. ![]() At the hotel, Wes stands behind a podium in front of a microphone and tells those gathered there not to be fooled by Fred's appearance. Gunn thinks they should do this every night. ![]() ![]() In the cave, the demon complains it's drafty since Fred broke a hole in the roof when she fell in. He gets up, offering to build a fire. Fred asks if he doesn't live in the cave. He's offended by the suggestion he'd call a dirt hole his home. Fred figures it was a logical conclusion considering he's a demon. He points out he's an "executive demon." He had an office and an assistant, along with a porcelain cup for his tea. He says he's in the cave because of the "Jasmaniacs." Fred is surprised to hear that. She tells him she's running from Jasmine also. The demon notes that's interesting, so dissimilar yet they have a common foe. He picks a blanket up off the ground, revealing a pile of human hands underneath it. The demon acts surprised and asks if they're hers, claiming he's never seen them before. He picks up one of the hands and looks at it, wondering "Why would anyone keep a stash of these tasty little ... uh .. I mean .. disgusting, meaty things like this lyin' around?"
