"Untouched"
Lilah enters Lindsey's darkened office, turns on the desk lamp and rifles through some papers on the desk. She's startled by Darla who's been there all along. Darla says it's nice, going through their little secrets, giving a feeling of control. Lilah just likes to keep up with what Lindsey's up to and she's sure he's in her office doing the same thing. Darla pours some bright purple powder from a vial into her hand and works it with her fingers. Lilah looks at it, recognizes it and asks Darla if that's how she keeps Angel sleeping when she's with him. Darla smiles saying dreams are lovely, all the hidden things are in them. If those doors are opened, one can understand who someone is, and they can be controlled. Lilah wonders what's hidden behind Angel's doors. Darla smiles and responds, "horrors." In his room at the Hyperion, Angel awakens with a start. He gets up, gets dressed and goes downstairs to the lobby where Wes and Cordy are standing in front of the desk, exchanging insults. Angel asks what's happening. Cordy says they were debating whether or not to pay Gunn. Angel notes that's not what he heard. Wes says that's where they started but they can't seem to discuss for long before they start hurling insults. Cordy says Wes doesn't want Gunn paid. Wes didn't say that, he just thinks he might be insulted by the offer. Cordy's view is that he's doing work for them and he should be paid for it. As Angel walks behind the desk, he says he'll consider it. That's not good enough for Cordelia, she demands that he pay Gunn. Angel asks her how about pretending she works for him. Cordy thinks he's being unpleasant. Angel offers why not pretend she doesn't work for him. She reminds him he can't fire her because she's the one who gets the visions, then sticks her tongue out at him. Angel suppresses a smile. He agrees to consider asking Gunn about payment on a case by case basis. Wes mumbles that's what he was going to suggest. Angel asks if there's any coffee. Cordelia says they had coffee that morning but it's gone, it's 10:00 at night. Angel didn't realize. He's disoriented, hasn't been sleeping well. Wesley's expression is one of concern. He wonders what's going on. Angel says he doesn't know. Wes knows this has been going on for awhile. He points out things seem a bit backwards, the more Angel sleeps, the less rest he seems to get. He asks Angel if he's having dreams. Before they can delve into that further, Cordy has a vision. A young woman in an alley is being attacked by two men. She gives Angel the address. After Angel leaves, Cordelia tells Wes he won't get there in time. In the alley, the young woman Cordy saw in her vision is being chased by the two guys. One of them grabs her and throws her to the ground. He pulls a knife as the two argue over who's going to have their fun with her first. Before either of them can do anything, the dumpster on the other side of the alley comes flying across and crushes them against the wall. The young woman is shaking, crying. Angel arrives at the alley, the cops are already there but the woman is gone. He walks past one of the attackers being loaded into an ambulance and strides through the crowd. He ducks under the crime scene tape, grabs a styrofoam coffee cup sitting on one of the patrol cars and approaches a patrol officer, pretending to be a detective. He wants to know what's happened. The officer buys the ruse and tells him they found two guys pinned to the wall by the dumpster which was apparently moved from the other side of the alley. He points out what he believes to be the guys' blood found on the ground, a ways from the dumpster. Angel hands the coffee cup off to the officer, walks over to the spot and kneels by it. He says it's not their blood. He asks the officer if anyone saw a scared girl around. The cop says no. Angel moves on up the alley. A detective approaches the uniformed officer and asks him what they've got. The officer looks puzzled. Angel sees a door unlocked on one of the buildings and enters. The woman, Bethany, is inside. She has a bleeding cut on the side of her forehead. Angel approaches her carefully and tells her he just wants to ask her a few questions. She tells him it's not a good idea for him to be there right now, she's upset. Angel knows she was in the alley. She denies it and starts to leave. He moves to stop her when a piece of rebar flies through the air, impaling his shoulder. He falls to his knees. As she heads for the exit, he asks her to wait. She turns to see he's gotten up. He winces as he pulls the rebar out of his shoulder and casts it aside. Bethany asks what he is. Angel tells her his name. She laughs nervously. She's sure she won't go to heaven now, she just impaled an Angel. Angel tells her he's not an Angel, it's just a name. She wonders how he just did what he did. He answers he's "different", as is she. He knows the men in the alley were trying to hurt her but she stopped them. She says she didn't mean to, they followed her from the club. Angel thinks she's new in town, he wonders if she has any family in LA. She doesn't. She says he can't force her to go with him. Angel looks at the hole in his shoulder and tells her he gets that and he'd never try. He offers her a business card, telling her if she needs a place to stay or someone to talk to, call. She says she's staying with a friend. He tells her to consider it. He won't hurt her and she can't hurt him. She may need that. She takes the card and leaves. Angel falls to the floor in pain, realizing she can hurt him a little. Bethany steps up to the apartment door of her friend, fumbling with her keys. The friend opens the door, she's glad to see Bethany is back. The friend is Lilah Morgan. Lilah and Bethany are sitting on the couch as Lilah folds laundry. She apologizes for not making it to the club with Bethany but she's overloaded at work, noting "our new clients are monsters." Bethany appreciates Lilah's letting her stay at her place. She had met her when Lilah came to speak at her school and was impressed seeing someone who made it on their own. She was amazed Lilah would even take the time to talk to her. Lilah tells her she doesn't understand yet, but Bethany is special. She has a power around her and others will soon know that too. Bethany heads upstairs to bed. Lilah wishes her "sweet dreams." Back at the hotel, Wes and Cordy are bandaging Angel's shoulder. Wes thinks it's best to deal cautiously with the girl. Angel says they need to find out everything they can about her. Cordelia suggests it would have been nice to have a name to start with. Angel points out that it's kind of hard to think straight with a metal rod sticking through your body. Thanks to her Sunnydale education, Cordy says she knows what that's like. She isn't sure where to start looking for the information. Angel tells her the girl's not local, she's staying with a friend, her accent says Northeast and she seems to be on the run from something. He suggests they start looking into anything with supernatural overtones since she seemed to have no real control, he doesn't reckon she's been able to keep a low profile. Wes wonders if she isn't some kind of demon. Angel assures him she's not, she's just a girl that's out of control. She's lost, she needs help. He asks Wes what he knows about telekinesis. Wes defines it, the power to move objects with the mind. That about covers what he knows. Demons are really more his forte. Angel suggests some research. Gunn comes in carrying a homemade ax that some of his crew fashioned for him out of a hubcap. He wants to know what kind of demon they're after. Angel tells him they want him to do some leg work. He says they're looking for a girl who smashed a couple of would be rapists with a dumpster. The occurrence was close to Gunn's neighborhood, he wants to know if Gunn can find out about them. Gunn agrees and leaves. Cordy again hits Angel up about paying Gunn, pointing out he can't even afford to buy a real ax. Angel promises to bring up the subject. He heads up the stairs to bed, saying it's been a long day. Cordelia notes he's only been up for 3 hours. Angel stops without turning back to look at her and tells her to find the girl. He goes upstairs. Wes and Cordy exchange a look. Upstairs at the hotel, Angel settles into bed. At Lilah's, Bethany is also falling asleep. She begins having nightmares about her childhood. She's in the attic with her father. Lilah enters the doorway to the bedroom and watches Bethany flinching in her sleep. Lilah is smiling. In her dream, Bethany's father tells her to come downstairs, just the two of them. He leads her downstairs and tells her not to "make a fuss." In the bedroom, the furniture begins to shake. The lamp suddenly comes flying off of the nightstand and clocks Lilah, knocking her to the floor. Bethany wakes, sees what's happened, apologizes and runs out as Lilah tells her not to leave. In Angel's dreams, Darla and Angelus are romping on the floor in front of the fireplace (looks like 1700's time frame). He's on his back, she's sitting on top of him, straddling him. She rips his shirt open. He sits up, they both morph into vamp face. As Angel is dreaming this, Darla is in his bed, whispering to him, reminding him how good it felt to drink the blood of the gypsy girl. In his dream, he and Darla feed off of each other. Angel wakes with a start and touches his hand to his neck. Angel comes downstairs, looking pretty ragged, and walks over to the lobby desk where Cordy is working at the computer. Wes is sitting on the couch, reading a book. Angel wonders if they've gotten any leads on the girl. Cordy says not yet. Angel turns to Wesley and asks if he's found anything. Wes says his research shows that telekinesis is a psychic power that usually manifests during times of extreme emotional duress. Angel reckons that makes sense, they need to find the girl. Cordy says she's got a lead and points to the doorway. Bethany has entered the hotel, still in the nightgown she was wearing when she ran out of Lilah's. She tells them her name, she decided to take him up on his offer. Angel assures her she's safe there. He introduces Wes and Cordy. Bethany asks if it's a "family thing." Angel says they're friends. He invites Bethany to come in. She starts down the steps and stumbles. Angel reaches out to catch her. She jumps away from his touch. Cordelia notices the reaction. At Wolfram & Hart, Lilah is meeting with Holland. He notices her black eye and wonders if they might have pushed Bethany too far with the setup in the alley. Lilah assures him things are under control. Holland isn't buying it. He wonders if she's this out of control now, how will it be "when we pull the trigger?" An uncontrollable assassin is not useful to them. Holland reminds her Bethany is her project and the inference is clear that he expects her to solve this problem. Lilah takes a call on her cell phone, it's Bethany. She smiles as she realizes who's calling. She asks Bethany where she is. Bethany tells her she's staying at the hotel. Lilah's smile fades quickly as she looks at Holland and takes in that news. Angel is standing in the hotel garden, looking contemplative. Bethany comes in and joins him. She says she called her friend but doesn't really know what to say. She's afraid her friend will think she's crazy. Angel wonders what's going on with her, he stands a better chance of helping if he knows what's happening. Bethany thinks maybe she is crazy. She doesn't really want to talk about herself. Angel says he has some experience in dealing with power that has to be controlled. Bethany doesn't want to control it, she wants to get rid of it. Cordelia is watching them from the desk, Wes is reading a book in the back office. Cordy says she feels something coming from Bethany, weird vibes. Wes hadn't noticed. Cordy says that's because he's a guy, but when it comes to women and sex, women see more levels. Wesley is engrossed in the book, apparently having found something relevant. In the garden, Angel moves over to Bethany and takes a seat next to her on the bench. She tells him she has no control over what happens or memory of it when it's over. Angel wonders if she's ever tried to do it consciously. She gets defensive. She stands and walks to the center of the courtyard, telling him she doesn't want to answer questions about herself. She becomes more tense and says she shouldn't be there. Wes comes in and says she's right. If she doesn't want their help she should leave. There are people who need help they could be assisting, people with more serious problems than "impulse control issues." Angel doesn't know what Wes is up to. Wes goes on, telling Bethany perhaps they should send her home, to her father. Bethany looks at Wesley, flashes to her father's face, Wes suddenly goes flying backward through the air and slams into the wall. Angel approaches her and she sends him flying backward into a wash of sunlight. He crawls quickly into the shade, still smoking from the sun exposure. Cordelia is icing down Wesley's neck. She asks what he said to Bethany that set her off. Wes says he mentioned her father. Cordy doesn't understand the connection. Wes didn't want to give Bethany a chance to get her defenses up. He says much of the time this kind of power is rooted in abuse of some sort, at an early age. When Cordy mentioned the weird vibes she was getting from Bethany, he remembered Bethany's remark about "family business" and put two and two together. He notes, statistically speaking, the father is the most likely to have been the abuser so that was the logical guess. Cordelia finds the whole notion too repulsive for words. Angel comes in and tells Wesley to leave. Cordelia tells him he can't fire Wes, she'll go too. Angel informs nobody is being fired. Wes understands after what happened, it would be difficult for Bethany to trust with him there. He tells Angel to call if he needs anything, he'll be at his place. As Wes reaches the doorway, Angel tells him it's good they know now what's going on. Wes responds quietly, "I hope so", then leaves. Angel tells Cordy she should go as well, just in case something happens. Cordy warns him to take care and leaves. Angel finds Bethany upstairs in one of the unrefurbished rooms. She feels safe there. She's embarrassed about what happened. She doesn't much like people. Angel says they're not so bad, he's seen a lot in his life, good and bad, but he's seen people try to be better. She wishes she could see people as he does. Angel is once again dreaming of Angelus and Darla feeding off of each other. There's a crunch as he grabs Darla's neck and yanks her head away from his own neck. She smiles as they both look off to the corner of the room where a terrified young woman is bound and gagged, struggling to free herself. Bethany comes into Angel's room as he wakes. He calls a name, Darla. Bethany says she wasn't able to sleep, she heard a voice in his room, she thought he was awake. She sits on the edge of the bed. He says he was having a nightmare. She notes from the look of things, it seemed more like it was a happy dream. Angel is noticeably uncomfortable, he wonders what she wanted to talk about. Bethany offers she came in to have "fun". She comes on to him, telling him he can "do things" to her. He tells her nothing is going to happen. She says she can make him happy. Angel tells her she wouldn't like him when he's happy. As she runs her hand up his leg, he looks at her face and for a brief flash, sees Darla in her place. He demands she stop it and grabs her by the wrist. Bethany jerks away from him as the bed begins to shake. Angel is confused how she can come on to him like that but yet not want to be touched. Bethany wonders if Angel is shocked she's a "slut." He assures her he doesn't shock all that easily. She says everyone thinks she's fragile and innocent, men are attracted to that. She tells him she's done things, when she was with men, she was like the maid. She made up the room, showed them in and left until they were gone. They didn't even notice she wasn't there. Angel doesn't think everyone is as bad as she thinks they are. Bethany thinks maybe he can't help her after all. Angel says maybe he's the only one who can help her. He tells her to get some sleep. She asks who Darla is. He doesn't answer, just bids her good night. As Bethany leaves, Darla peers out from where she's been hiding just outside of Angel's bedroom. She watches Bethany go then looks back toward Angel's room. At W&H, Holland is unhappy to hear Angel isn't sleeping. He tells Lilah Lindsey sees the big picture here and his efforts are directed toward that but Lilah's little 'project' is messing that up. Holland tells her to get Bethany out of the way, for Lilah's own sake. Lilah's expression indicates she understands the threat implied. At the hotel, Angel is working with Bethany. He drops a scarf on the floor and tells her to try picking it up. Bethany hesitates a bit, then focues on the scarf. It lifts gently off of the floor and drapes itself around Angel's neck. He tells her that proves she can control her power. Cordy comes out from the back office where she's been watching what's been happening in the lobby. She gives Angel a look and notes sarcastically , "Nice look." Angel pulls the scarf off. Cordy gives him an address, telling him Gunn wants to meet him there. She says she'll look after Bethany, they can do some shopping at the plaza. Angel and Gunn arrive at a nice apartment. Angel kicks the door in. Gunn goes inside. Angel is unable to enter as long as the tenent is alive. Gunn says he's on the critical list. He asks Angel if he notices anything. Angel notes it's a pretty nice apartment for a low level street thug. Gunn says according to what he's heard, the guy was "muscle for hire" and he didn't hire himself out cheap. Angel realizes that someone hired him to hurt Bethany or to test her to see what her reaction would be to a threat. Angel is leaning against the invisible barrier preventing him from entering the apartment. He hesitantly asks Gunn how he'd feel about being paid on a case by case basis. Gunn thinks that sounds good. Angel suddenly falls through the doorway, landing face first on the floor. Gunn smiles and makes a crack about Angel being graceful. Angel guesses the apartment's resident is no longer on the critical list. Gunn doesn't intend to shed any tears for a thug for hire who was a would be rapist. Angel and Gunn go through the apartment. Angel looks through some papers on the desk, then hits redial on the phone. He listens on the speaker as the receptionist at W&H answers. Cordy and Bethany are at the plaza, having a latte. Cordy tells Bethany Angel is the chivalrous type, he sees her as the girl who needs rescuing and she's concerned because she sees Bethany as dangerous. Bethany says the men in the alley were going to hurt her. Cordy tells her she knows how afraid she was, she had a vision, she felt it all, but she's concerned that rather than make a decision to disable her attackers, Bethany went for the kill. Cordy doesn't want the same thing to happen to her friends, or herself. Bethany understands and tells her she doesn't have to worry about anything. She wonders if Cordy and Angel are involved. Cordy is quick to say no, she prefers her men "less broody and more spendy." Bethany laughs. A man walks by them, jamming a tranquilizer injector into Bethany's neck as he passes, then a couple of guys try to grab her. Cordy throws hot coffee in their faces causing them to let go of Bethany. Cordy tries to get her away. They are intercepted as they try to get away by a van. A couple of guys jump out, shove Cordy to the street and take Bethany. Angel and Gunn pull up, Cordy tells them Bethany is in the van. Gunn and Angel take off in pursuit. When they get behind the van, Angel tells Gunn to take the wheel as he climbs onto the hood of the car and jumps onto the back of the van. He gets the door open and throws the two guys inside of it out, into the street. Lilah is on her cell phone, not happy. The person on the other end tells her Angel has Bethany back at the hotel. Lilah says it's time to "pull the trigger." Back at the hotel, Cordy and Angel follow Bethany as she storms into the unrenovated room where she took refuge earlier. Bethany is very upset. Angel tells her he knows Lilah, she's not what she's pretending to be. Bethany doesn't want to believe him, she thought Lilah was her friend. The doors in the room slam shut. She sinks to the floor as things begin flying through the air. Angel tries to get her to take control, telling her nobody is controlling her but herself. Bethany finally manages to calm down, stands up and walks over to the door. She opens it and sees her father standing on the other side. All of the windows on the upper floor of the hotel are blown out from the inside. Cordy and Angel are getting their bearings back after the concussion. Bethany's father tells her he only wants to help her. A nail comes flying out of the wall and embeds in Cordy's arm. She winces and pulls it out. Bethany's father moves to stand in front of the window. He wants to bring her home with him, they can be a family again. He's sure she wants to stop running. He promises things will be just like they were before. As he's talking, the walls are shaking, the wallpaper is peeling off the walls, plaster is falling from the ceiling. Angel gets up and calls to Bethany. He's pressed backwards by an unseen force, against the wall. Bethany's father wants her to come home with him now. Angel is released from the wall as Bethany's father is floated above the floor and choked. He begs Angel to stop her. Angel tells Bethany she has the power. He tells her to "finish it." She says good-bye to her father and sends him flying out the window of the top floor. She stops him just before he smashes onto the street, then lets him drop the rest of the short distance to the ground. Back at Lilah's, Bethany is packing up her things. Lilah tries to talk her into staying. Bethany lets her know she's aware Lilah was behind what happened to her in the alley. Lilah claims she was trying to make her realize her power. As Bethany holds out her hand, her suitcase snaps shut on the bed and flies into her grasp. She thanks Lilah for doing that and walks out. Angel is waiting for her outside the door. Bethany tells Lilah not to try to find her. Lilah reminds Angel he's not invited in. He thinks Lilah should learn to lose more gracefully. Lilah tells Bethany Angel is a vampire. Angel and Bethany both look at each other for a moment. Bethany's only response to that revelation is to say, "weird." She heads down the stairs. Angel tells Lilah she'll have to find someone else's mind to mess with. Lilah assures him they already have someone in mind. As he departs, Lilah bids him "sweet dreams" and slams her door shut.
