"Expecting"
It's evening and Cordelia is at the office, using one of the windows as a mirror to guide herself as she applies some lipstick. Angel enters and compliments her appearance, scaring her into turning around and smudging lipstick across her face. She turns back to check her reflection in the window, of course hers is the only reflection showing. Angel apologizes for startling her as he begins to file some papers in the filing cabinet. She suggests he start humming or something when he sneaks up on people to keep from scaring them to death. He declines the suggestion. Angel tells her he's confused about her filing system, nothing seems to make sense. Cordelia explains her system, as only Cordy can, but the explanation doesn't really clarify anything about just what criteria she uses for deciding where to file what. Wes enters the office, carrying a Bavarian fighting adz. He wonders if Cordy has had any visions recently or if Angel could use any assistance in fighting evil. Angel tells him there's nothing really going on at the moment. Wesley has brought a word puzzle game along, he challenges Angel or Cordy to play him a game. Cordelia tells him she's got a life, and plans, for the evening. Two young women enter the office, Serena and Emily. Serena introduces herself to Wesley. She makes a comment about the fighting adz he's still carrying. Wesley is a bit tongue tied and nervous. He swings the adz around and ends up sticking it in the wall. Angel looks from the wall to Wes to Serena, but says nothing. Serena tells Cordy they're late, that Wilson has gotten them into some elite club. Cordy finishes up her makeup. Serena tells her she looks great, Wilson will be pleased. Angel wants to know who Wilson is. Serena tells him he's a fashion photographer, Wilson Christopher, who's been dating Cordelia. Angel walks over to Cordy, laughing, and asks her why he didn't know she was seeing someone. Cordy tells him because she's ashamed of him and she didn't want Wilson embarrassed by the inevitable barrage of questions she knew Angel would subject him to. Suddenly Cordy grabs her head in pain and collapses to the floor behind the desk. Angel knocks some papers off of the desk onto the floor and asks her to pick them up for him, covering for the vision. Wesley rushes over and begins picking up the papers, also trying to cover for Cordelia. Angel faces the two women standing between them and the desk, blocking their view of what's happening. He tries to make small talk as a distraction. Wesley stands up and positions himself next to Angel, further blocking the women's view of Cordy. Emily invites Angel to join them at the club, he declines, saying he thinks he has plans. Cordelia pulls herself to her feet, Angel turns to face her. He asks her to describe again the client he's supposed to be meeting later. Cordelia gives an odd description of a hatching baby thing with claws, scribbles an address on a piece of paper and tells Angel he's to meet it there. Cordelia, Serena and Emily leave the office. Angel grabs his coat. Wesley offers his assistance if Angel should need any. Out of pity, more than need, Angel hands him the piece of paper with the address on it and exits the office. Wesley is thrilled to feel needed. Wes turns back and tries to pull the fighting adz out of the wall as Angel watches from outside the office window. Wes manages to yank the adz free from the wall, overbalancing himself in the process and falling backward onto the floor. Angel and Wesley arrive at the address Cordelia left from her vision. Angel draws a sword and Wes is armed with the fighting adz and a crossbow. They ascend the steps to the front door, where Wesley kicks it in and enters, weapons ready for action. Angel tries to enter, but is stopped by an invisible barrier. Inside the house, there's an elderly couple, each seated in a recliner, watching television. Wesley warns them not to move and demands to know where their eggs are. Angel glances toward a neighboring house and through the window, sees the creature from Cordelia's vision. He tries to get Wesley's attention but Wes is still harassing the occupants of the home he has burst into, sure that's where he's supposed to be. Angel finally gets Wesley's attention and motions toward the house where the creature is visible through the window. Wes sees what Angel is directing his attention to, lowers his weapons and apologizes to the elderly couple for kicking in their door. Angel and Wesley battle the creature. Slime flies onto the glass of the window and sticks to it. The creature screams as Angel wields his sword and Wesley attacks it with his adz. Wes is thrown through the front door. He gets back up, still carrying his adz, and rushes back into the room through the broken door. The sound of battle continues. Finally, Angel steps through the door, covered in slime. He's still carrying his sword. Wesley follows him out, also covered in slime. He's feeling invigorated after the battle. Wesley thinks that Cordy seems a little remiss in her job, considering she sent them to the wrong address. Angel tells him she's had to handle losing Doyle, getting the visions and that she's young. She has yet to find her place in the world. Wesley believes demon hunters have a calling to a higher purpose. He thinks she should take more care where her job is concerned. Angel teases Wesley about the ladies Cordelia left with, telling him he thinks they found him attractive. Wes doesn't really believe it, but he wants to. At the La Brea Lounge, Serena accepts a drink from the bartender then tells the guy she's with, Jason, that she needs money to pay for it. He gives her the money, which she in turn gives to the bartender. As Serena and Jason share a kiss, Emily joins them. She's bored. Serena looks over at Cordy and Wilson, noting Cordy certainly doesn't seem to be. Cordelia and Wilson are sitting on a couch together, chatting. She is obviously quite taken with him and he's obviously quite the master at saying what a woman wants to hear. He tells her he intends to send Serena flowers for introducing him to Cordy. He finds her genuine, not like other LA types. He's laying it on pretty thick and Cordelia is hanging on every word. Cordelia and Wilson arrive at her apartment. She thanks him for the lovely evening. They share a kiss good night. She decides to invite him into the apartment. He comes inside and compliments the accommodations. Cordelia shuts the door and dims the lights. She tells him it's a step up from her previous dwelling. Wilson verifies that she lives alone. The lights get bright. Cordelia dims them again. She blames the erratic lighting on the wiring but it's obviously Phantom Dennis voicing a silent opinion on her date. Cordelia admits that she's a bit rusty at the dating game, she hasn't had anyone over to her place before. Wilson suggests they put on some music. Cordy turns the stereo on some easy listening, but it switches to polka tunes. Phantom Dennis again. She turns the stereo off and offers Wilson some tea. Cordelia enters the kitchen to make the tea and warns Phantom Dennis to stop mucking up her date. She threatens him with a nonstop marathon of Madonna's "Evita" if he doesn't. Wilson walks into the kitchen and wonders who she was talking to. She says she has a ghost, then laughs and says she always seems to have something breaking around the apartment so she just talks to herself in frustration sometimes. Wilson kisses her. Cordelia kisses him back. They end up in the bedroom, on the bed, kissing more intensely as things heat up between them. Cordelia awakens the next morning to find herself alone. Wilson has left. She reaches for her alarm clock, noting it's after 10:00 in the morning and she's going to be late for work. She struggles to pull herself up, pushes the blanket back and is startled by the sight of her stomach, swollen and quite obviously pregnant. Cordelia is still in bed, anxious and confused. Angel and Wesley approach her apartment door. Angel tells Wesley he left two messages on Cordy's answering machine, he should have heard from her by now. He knocks on the door, calling out to Cordy. Wes suggests she may have slept somewhere else or perhaps unhooked the phone so as not to be disturbed. Angel breaks the lock on the door and walks in. Wesley follows reluctantly. Angel calls out to Cordy, but she doesn't answer. Angel opens the door to the bedroom and sees Cordelia in her obviously very pregnant state, sitting up in her bed. Wesley is shocked by the sight. Angel walks over to Cordelia, who appears to be in shock, and tries to reassure her things will be okay. Cordy thinks she's having a nightmare from which she is unable to wake. Angel sits on the edge of the bed and speaks to her calmly and soothingly, asking if she remembers what happened. Cordelia, on the verge of tears, tells him what happened the night before. Angel wants to know if Cordy has spoken to Wilson since the events of the previous evening. She hasn't. He gives her the phone and asks her to dial the number for him so he can talk to Wilson, believing that is where the answers will be found regarding what has happened to Cordy. Cordelia dials the phone and gives it to Angel. Angel listens for a moment, then hears a disconnect message on the other end of the line. He doesn't tell Cordelia the number is no longer in service, only that Wilson isn't in right then. He gets up to leave and assures her that he and Wesley will be nearby. They leave her alone in her bed. Phantom Dennis pulls the covers up around her and hands her a tissue. In the living room of Cordelia's apartment, Angel hangs up the phone. He tells Wesley that Wilson's personal as well as business phones have been disconnected, there are no forwarding addresses or numbers and he hasn't got an arrest record. Angel thinks the demon is a procreative parasite of some sort. Wesley recognizes the type, a demon that can't reproduce without a human female as a host. Angel says the human mothers usually don't survive giving birth. Wes notes that as pregnant as Cordelia seems to be after only one night, birth could occur at any time. Angel reckons they need to get the answers as soon as possible and directs Wes to take Cordy for a prenatal examination. Wes agrees and asks him what he plans to do. Angel responds that he's going looking for Wilson. At the La Brea Lounge, Angel approaches the bartender and asks him about Wilson Christopher. Angel tells him Wilson hurt a friend of his, he wants to know where Wilson hangs out, who he hangs out with. The bartender is familiar with the name. He tells Angel that the guys have the money, the girls have the looks, they decide what club to go to and Serena pretty much controls the girls. Angel thanks him for the info. The bartender asks if he's Cordelia's boyfriend. Angel responds he's "family". In a clinic waiting room, Cordelia is waiting to be seen by a doctor. A pregnant woman asks her if she knows the sex of her baby. Cordelia doesn't answer. Wes joins Cordy and tells her she shouldn't have to wait very long, he's told the nurse it's rather urgent. The pregnant woman notes that Cordy is "carrying low" and starts to suggest something about the sex of the baby as she reaches out to touch Cordelia's belly. Cordy jumps and snaps at the woman not to touch her. In the exam room, the doctor is checking Cordelia out as Wesley looks on. He notes she must be about 8 1/2 months into her pregnancy. The doctor instructs Cordy to lay back as he begins the ultrasound. He looks at the monitor and tells Cordelia she's having twins. Cordy and Wes are both shocked by the revelation. The doctor continues looking at the monitor, then tells them he's found a third heartbeat. The nurse points out yet another one. Wesley looks at the monitor screen. The doctor is still counting, he's up to six before he expresses shock and concern. Cordelia wants to know what's going on. The doctor tries to sound reassuring as he tells her he'd like to do an amniocentesis just to make sure things are okay. Wesley looks apprehensively at the ultrasound monitor, then glances over at Cordelia. Angel steps out of an apartment building elevator, approaches a door and knocks. He calls out Serena's name. She answers through the closed door and tells him to leave the delivery outside the door. Angel identifies himself and asks if he can enter the apartment. Serena agrees. Inside, the apartment is dark, illuminated only by the glow of some candles. Serena has her back to him, she's drinking liquor straight from the bottle. She tells Angel she thought he was the delivery guy from the liquor store. She knows she probably shouldn't be drinking. She turns to face Angel and he sees Serena is also pregnant, as far along as Cordelia. She hopes the drinking will harm her baby. In the clinic exam room, the doctor is preparing to draw amniotic fluid from Cordelia. He warns her about the minimal risk to her pregnancy from the procedure. Cordelia doesn't care about the risk, she just wants it over with. The doctor draws the fluid and hands the syringe to his nurse. She takes it and starts to prepare it. Suddenly, she urgently calls for the doctor as the syringe begins to crack. She drops it and screams. The doctor looks on at the broken syringe on the floor as the fluid dissolves the floor beneath it. The doctor excuses himself as he and his nurse leave the room. Wesley inspects the fluid eating through the floor, his mouth agape as he looks back at Cordelia. She wants to know what's inside of her. Wes tells her they need to find Angel. Cordelia just wants to know if her babies look healthy. Wesley simply looks at her, not knowing quite what to say. At Serena's apartment, she tells Angel she can't quite believe what is happening to her really is happening. Angel assures her it's real and tells her the same thing is happening to Cordelia. Serena hasn't been able to reach Jason, the father of her child. She tells Angel she thinks he's skipped. Angel says Wilson also bailed on Cordelia. Serena felt something was wrong all along. She tells Angel that the guys' money smelled really bad and they seemed to be nervous about something. Serena is visibly shaken. Angel asks if she has family she can call, someone to help her. She says she has no one, the guys seemed to prefer it that way. Wilson had asked if Cordelia had anyone and Serena told him she didn't. Just as Angel begins to ask her where he can find the guys, she doubles over and screams in pain. As Wesley and Cordelia are descending in the elevator into Angel's apartment, Cordelia doubles over in pain and screams. Wesley supports her and leads her out of the elevator, reassuring her that everything will be okay. He leads her into Angel's bedroom and helps her get settled on the bed as he covers her with a blanket. Cordelia tells him she knows he's afraid of whatever it is inside of her, that he thinks it's something awful and thinks if she knows how terrible it is she might do something. Wes tries to reassure her, telling her he doesn't know yet exactly what is going on, he needs some time to go through the information they've gathered. Cordelia is caressing her belly. She tells Wesley there are seven babies and they are talking to her. She speaks to her stomach and tells whatever is inside of her that she cannot understand what they are saying. She tells Wesley she doesn't think what's inside of her is human. Wes thinks that's a safe bet. Cordy continues fretting about what's inside of her, yet seems more concerned at this point that whatever it is will be all right. Wesley encourages her to rest and pulls the blanket up around her. He turns away from Cordelia to see Angel standing in the doorway. They both look at each other briefly, then Wes follows Angel into the living area. Wesley wonders if Angel had any luck tracking down Wilson. Angel says he got a good lead from Serena, who is as pregnant as Cordelia is. He tells Wesley it's obvious that Wilson and his friends are all involved in whatever is going on. He begins leafing through the phone book and notes there's no way of knowing just how many women are in the same situation as Serena and Cordelia. Wesley tells Angel about the ultrasound results, showing seven heartbeats, perhaps more. He ponders the possibilities of many women being pregnant with an equal number of demon offspring and what that could mean. Angel thinks someone is raising their own army. It's urgent they find the demon fathers to get the answers they need. As Angel scans the yellow pages, he tells Wesley Serena told him Wilson and his friends hang out at a private gun club but she didn't know which one. He suggests to Wesley that he try to find a way to terminate the pregnancy without hurting Cordelia while he (Angel) tracks down Wilson and his pals. Wesley wonders what happens if he can't find a way to terminate the pregnancy safely. Angel tears a page out of the phone book and tells him in that case, they'll need to figure out what to do with them once they're born. Wesley and Angel move back into the living room. They stop when they come to the kitchen and see Cordelia in front of the refrigerator, guzzling blood from a glass container. Some of it spills over and runs down her chin. Angel and Wesley both look disturbed by the sight. Angel comments that he didn't realize that was so repulsive and suggests Wes get Cordelia to go back to bed, then order her a pizza. Wesley thinks that sounds like a good idea. Cordelia places what's left of the blood back in the refrigerator, wipes her mouth with her shirtsleeve and walks past Angel and Wesley, telling them she "was hungry." Angel tracks Wilson down at a posh gun club. Wilson is reloading his gun after emptying it into a paper target. He advises Angel it's dangerous to sneak up behind people, accidents can happen that way. Angel is unimpressed with Wilson's display of bravado. He tells Wilson he is a friend of Cordelia's. Wilson guesses Angel is Cordy's boss. He points the gun at Angel's throat and tells him Cordelia told him all about Angel. Angel reckons that's doubtful as he grabs Wilson's hand, causing the gun to fall to the floor, then twists him around, wraps his arm around Wilson's throat and throws him against a nearby wall. Angel realizes that Wilson is human, so he couldn't be the father of whatever is inside Cordelia. He surmises that Wilson and his friends are just surrogates of some kind for something else. He grabs Wilson and demands to know how things work, telling him Cordelia and the others will die if the pregnancies come to term. Wilson couldn't care less about the fate of the women involved and tells Angel as much. He also declines to give him any information about just what is responsible. Angel beats Wilson down to the floor, deflecting a couple of attempted blows by Wilson in the process. Just as he's about to pull him up to hit him again, Wilson's friends enter the room. Back at Angel's apartment, Wesley is comparing the image from the ultrasound to a drawing of a demon in one of the books from Angel's library. He responds with disgust when he realizes he's found a match. He is startled to see Cordelia standing beside him, looking at the picture in the book. She wants to know if that's the father of her offspring as she picks up the book to inspect the picture more closely. Wesley tells her to try not to be upset and reminds her that these old drawings are often inaccurate. He suggests that now they know exactly what type of demon they are dealing with, there is a good chance they can find a way to stop what's going on. Cordelia looks at him for a moment, then closes the book and bashes Wesley upside the head with it, sending him reeling. She tells him she won't let anyone hurt her "babies" as she hits him again, sending him to the floor, unconscious. Back at the gun club, Angel informs Wilson and his associates that it all makes sense now. They serve the demon by being his proxy in procreation and he repays them by granting them wealth, power and success in life. Wilson smugly tells him there are worse things to align oneself with in LA. Angel gets into Wilson's face and demands the whereabouts of the demon Wilson and his cohorts serve. Wilson just smiles as one of the other guys pulls a gun. Wilson pushes Angel backward and catches the gun as the other guy tosses it to him. Wilson shoots Angel several times in the chest, sending him sinking to his knees. Wilson and his friends are quite pleased with themselves until Angel straightens up and they see his face, which has morphed into its vampire visage. Angel beats down the four men, then kicks Wilson through a glass door. He steps on Wilson's face and demands to know where the demon is. Cordelia enters a warehouse where she is joined by Serena, Emily and 3 other women. All are in a similar stage of pregnancy. They look at each other as the sounds of their unborn speaking to them fill the air then start walking through the deserted warehouse together. At Angel's apartment, the phone is ringing. Wes manages to pull himself off the floor. Angel is in a phone booth, pulling bullets out of his chest with his bloodied hands, as he waits for someone to answer the phone. When Wes answers, Angel tells him he tracked Wilson down and whatever fathered what's inside Cordelia, it's not him. Wesley says he researched the matter and discovered the identity of the demon, it's a "Haxil Beast", a demon of the inner earth. Wes blames himself that Cordelia took off. He tells Angel he tried to prevent her from leaving, but that she got very protective when she saw the drawing of the Haxil. Wesley thinks she may have gone to meet up with the demon. Angel confirms to Wesley that's the case, and tells him where to find it. Wilson had told him where he and his friends had constructed their shrine. He goes on to say Cordelia would know where to find it since she's telepathically linked to its offspring inside of her. Wesley realizes that they need to cut off that connection between the demon and its unborn by slaying the demon. The pregnancies will then end without any harm being done to the women. He is reading through the book and comes upon disturbing information. He tells Angel the Haxil is very difficult to kill, conventional means won't do it, and it's very large. Angel only wants to know if Wesley is a straight shot. At the vacant warehouse, Cordelia and the other women don white robes then descend a few steps into a large vat where they are waist deep in a liquid of some sort. Wesley enters the warehouse, yells for Cordelia and tells all of the women to get out of the vat. He is repulsed by the stench emanating from the liquid. He tries to make the women understand that they must get out of there if they are going to survive. Cordelia and the others appear to be in some kind of trance, they're not listening to Wesley. Suddenly, the ground vibrates with impact tremors from something really large approaching. As Wesley and the women look on, the huge Haxil Demon steps through an opening in the wall. The demon demands Wesley identify himself. Wes puts up his fists, tells the demon his name and informs it that he is there to kill it. The demon is more than willing to engage Wesley in battle. Wesley realizes he needs to stall for some time so he moves slowly toward the demon, telling it he likes to get to know his opponents before combat and wonders if the Haxil has any interests. The demon isn't interested in the game. It moves toward Wesley. Angel pushes a tank down a ramp, diverting everyone's attention. He follows the tank down the ramp, picks it up and hurls it at the Haxil, who catches it as if it were nothing. The label on the tank identifies it as "Liquid Nitrogen". Wesley pulls a gun and fires at the tank, hitting it. The demon drops it as liquid nitrogen streams from the bullet hole in the tank and onto the demon. The Haxil screams. The women in the vat scream as their stomachs slowly return to normal size. No more demon pregnancies. Angel and Wes watch as the demon is frozen into solid ice. The screaming stops. Cordelia steps out of the vat, walks toward Wesley and grabs a large pulley on a rope that's hanging from the ceiling. She swings it into the block of ice that is the Haxil, shattering it into pieces. At the office, Angel and Wes are tidying things up in preparation for Cordelia's return to work. She enters, they both tell her she looks great. Angel says she didn't have to come back to work so soon, it's only been a couple of days. Cordy felt she was ready and anyway she had an audition for a commercial. Wesley and Angel think it's great that she's getting back into the swing of things so easily. Cordelia tells them that the commercial's producer liked her and has invited her out to dinner. The guys don't seem too enthusiastic about this, but are supportive anyway. Cordelia goes on to tell them the producer told her if he could implant her with his master's demon seed, she's got the part. She smiles as the guys finally realize she's been kidding. Cordy tells them she learned a few things; that she's stronger than others think and that Wes and Angel are true friends she can count on no matter what. Wesley looks away from her and dabs at his eyes with his handkerchief. Angel looks at Wes, then back at Cordelia, and smiles.
