Synopsis

Group The Short: Angel Investigations is moving into the Hyperion Hotel, but they need financial advice. This brings their former client David Nabbit calling with advice, which helps out. Gunn enlists the help of Angel Investigations in ousting the demon Deevak who has moved into his neighborhood and is taking over the local crime. After an unsuccessful attempt to get information from an informant, the group go home, only to have Cordelia have a vision of Gunn in trouble. She is unable to contact Wesley or Angel, so she takes Angel's car to save Gunn by herself. When she arrives at Gunn's place he seems fine and the car gets stolen. Gunn helps her recover the car, but falls into a trap set by Deevak, who it ends up is the informant. Angel and Wesley catch up in time to help Gunn defeat Deevak and his vampire minions, but Cordelia now understands that the danger to Gunn wasn't the demon, but Gunn himself. He keeps taking unnecessary risks and is going to get himself killed, so she swears to watch out for him, despite his objections. Meanwhile Angel gets reoccurring romantic dreams sent by Darla to seduce him back to her.

The Long: Unfinished.

Creature Feature

Jameel Deevak Deevak is a big strong demon who looks like his face is melted. He displayed the power to turn into a human form, similar to vampires, Bracken and Anomovic demons, but in his case the two forms were so different you couldn't recognize that they were the same person. In his human form he went by the name Jameel, and still had some level of superhuman strength. He wanted to take over the street crime in Gunn's part of Los Angeles and had humans and vampires working for him.

Cool Quotes

  1. Wesley: ''Shotgun!''
Wesley surprised me with that one.

  2. Wesley: ''...now about the naked thing.''
    Angel: ''I'll get dressed.''
    Wesley: ''Much appreciated.''
No, there is no sexual tension between Wesley and Angel at all...

References

    C3PO
  1. Gunn: ''You two? I find Deevak I'm gonna need more than C3PO and stick figure Barbie backing me up. No offence.''
C3PO is a robotic character from the Star War series of films played by
Anthony Daniels. C3PO was a very intellectual but somewhat comedic character who was a professional interpreter. The Star Wars series of films was referenced by Willow is When She Was Bad, Spike in School Hard, Buffy in Choices, Xander in The Freshman, Xander in Fear, Itself and Cordelia in Sense And Sensitivity.

Ken and Barbie Ken and Barbie are a famous doll line by Kenner. Barbie has her own web site at http://www.barbie.com/. Also referenced by Willow in Welcome To The Hellmouth, Cordelia in Halloween, Pete in Beauty And The Beasts and by Sharon in Lonely Hearts.

  2. David: ''I was in Kuala Lumpur. Hostile take-over. Ah, identify yourself, traveler. Are you also a fellow demon killer?''
Kuala Lumpur is the captiol of Malaysia with a population of 1.1 million people. Kuala Lumpur came into being in the late 1860s when a band of prospectors in search of tin landed at the meeting point of the Kelang and Gombak rivers and imaginatively named the place Kuala Lumpur which means muddy convergence.

    L.A. Confidential
  3. Cordelia: ''When you do find him, you may wanna be a little more Guy Pearce in L.A. Confidential and a little less Michael Madsen in Reservoir Dogs.''
Gunn: ''I haven't bothered to see a movie since Denzel was robbed of the Oscar for Malcolm X.''
L.A. Confidential is a 1997 film with Guy Pearce as Ed Exley. He was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award for outstanding performance by a cast. It also featured John Mahon as the police chief. John played Trevor Lockley in season 1 of Angel. Plot: Three detectives in the corrupt and brutal Los Angeles police force of the 1950s use differing methods to uncover a conspiracy behind the shotgun slayings of the patrons at an all-night diner.

Reservoir Dogs Reservoir Dogs is a 1992 film with Michael Madsen as Vic Vega. Plot: A gang of thieves carry out an armed robbery on a diamond warehouse. The police are after them so quickly that they suspect they have a rat in their company. This film starts right after the robbery, with flashbacks to before the robbery, and to the planning of the crime. We are also introduced to the main characters in flashback mode. Plenty of fast action, and plenty of blood and gore.

Denzel Washington Malcolm X is a 1992 film with Denzel Washington as Malcolm X. Plot: Biography of Malcolm X, the famous African American leader. Born Malcolm Little, his father was killed by the Ku Klux Klan. He became a gangster, and while in jail discovered the Nation of Islam writings of Elijah Muhammad. He preaches the teachings when let out of jail, but later on goes on a pilgrimage to the city of Mecca, there he converts to the original Islamic religion and becomes a Sunni Muslim. He changes his name to El-Hajj Malik Al-Shabazz and stops his anti-white teachings, as he realizes his mistakes. He is later on assassinated and dies a Muslim martyr.

Oscar The Oscars (a.k.a. the Academy Awards) are the annual presentation of awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. An Oscar is considered the highest honor one can receive in show business (and drive's one's asking price up as well). Denzel was nominated for a best actor Oscar for the roll of Malcolm X in 1993, but it was won by Al Pacino for his roll in Scent of a Woman. They have an official web site at http://www.oscar.com/. Also referenced by Xander in Beer Bad and Cordelia in Eternity. (Thanks to the BuffyGuide for this entry.)

  4. Wesley: ''Angel, it's the law in California. Do you want us to get pulled over?''
California vehicle code 27803 states ''(a) A driver and any passenger shall wear a safety helmet meeting requirements established pursuant to Section 27802 when riding on a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, or motorized bicycle. (b) It is unlawful to operate a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, or motorized bicycle if the driver or any passenger is not wearing a safety helmet as required by subdivision (a). (c) It is unlawful to ride as a passenger on a motorcycle, motor-driven cycles, or motorized bicycle if the driver or any passenger is not wearing a safety helmet as required by subdivision (a). (d) This section applies to persons who are riding on motorcycles, motor-driven cycles, or motorized bicycles operated on the highways. (e) For the purposes of this section, "wear a safety helmet" or "wearing a safety helmet" means having a safety helmet meeting the requirements of Section 27802 on the person's head that is fastened with the helmet straps and that is of a size that fits the wearing person's head securely without excessive lateral or vertical movement. (f) In enacting this section, it is the intent of the Legislature to ensure that all persons are provided with an additional safety benefit while operating or riding a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, or motorized bicycle.''

    BMW
  5. Gunn: ''Look, I told you, you wanna jack beemers in Brentwood, be my guest, but leave the neighborhood cars alone.''
A beemer is a common term for a car made by German automobile manufacturer BMW. They have a web site at http://www.bmw.com/.
Brentwood is a very expensive area on the west side of Los Angeles, just west of Bel Air and Westwood. (Thanks to Marsia from the Watcher's Diary for helping find this information.)

    Dionne Warwick
  6. Gunn: ''I ain't buying any of this Dionne Warwick crap.''
In the early 1990s, former singer Dionne Warwick hosted the Psychic Friends Network's 30-minute infomercials, coaxing late-night television viewers to call one of its 2,000 psychics, who foretold the future at $3.99 a minute.

Goofs

  1. When David Nabbit talks about how to buy the hotel with no money down, he mentions ''FHA with PMI to cover the down''. PMI is Private Mortgage Insurance. When you put down less than 20% on a purchase loan, this insurance policy covers the lender in case the borrower defaults on payment (gets foreclosed on) and the borrower pays the premium monthly. FHA call their version of PMI MIP (Mortgage Insurance Premium). FHA must have a down payment of 3% minimum although is can be in the form of a gift from either relatives or a charity organization. This has nothing to do with no down loans. (Thanks to Marsia from the Watcher's Diary for pointing this out.)

  2. When Angel and the guys rest on the car after their fight with the vampires you can clearly see Angel's face reflected in the finish, despite the fact that he is a vampire and should cast no reflection.

  3. When Angel and Wesley ready to drive away on the motorcycle, Angel puts his harm high on Wesley's body, but when the camera angle changes to a far shot, Angel's arms are much lower.
Note: When Darla removes Angel's shirt as they make out on the couch you can clearly see he has no tattoo on his back, but since this is a dream sequence, it's not technically a goof.

    Points Of View

    Mathew:

This was a bit of a letdown. Sure it was nice to see David again, and Darla is just plain hot, but I think Gunn is a little overplayed. So boring and stereotypical of a rebel-hero. The fact that they have to reintroduce Dennis every time he makes an appearance is wearing a little thin, as well as they using of him for a running joke. How about giving Dennis a major part?
