Synopsis
The Short: From the WB11 home
page: Wesley and Angel endure a painful experience: attending Cordelia's
first stage appearance. As they stretch the truth to spare potential hurt
feelings, Cordelia spots Oliver Simon, a top talent agent, and one of his
clients, Rebecca Lowell, a former soap opera star, leaving a
paparazzi-filled event. While Cordelia lists the many accomplishments of
Rebecca Lowell, Angel notices Rebecca is in apparent danger and rescues her
from an ongoing car. The next day, Rebecca pays a visit to Angel Investigations and tells
Angel she is being stalked by a celebrity fan. She asks Angel for his help,
but he turns down the case. Wesley deduces Angel has feelings for Rebecca
and has rejected the case to prevent himself from obtaining the true
happiness that would unleash his evil vampire within. Cordelia is beside
herself with disappointment, after all, this Rebecca woman could be a
serious networking opportunity! Later that evening, Rebecca has a gathering.
As she ascends the stairs she hears noises. Angel bursts in and chases out
the stalker. When Rebecca glances into the mirror, she notices Angel does
not have a reflection. She asks him about this, and he tells her the truth.
The next day, Rebecca asks Angel to attend a premiere with her. After they
make their grand entrance, they enter a secret alleyway and encounter
Rebecca's stalker. Angel manages to drag him down. When
Rebecca realizes the stalker is a stuntman and former client of Oliver's,
she confronts him. When Oliver mentions no one stays young forever,
Rebecca glances at Angel and gets an idea. The next day, she and Cordelia
go shopping and Rebecca pumps her for information. That night, she comes
over in a sexy number and gives Angel a bottle of champagne to thank him
for his valiant efforts. She slips a drug into his
drink and moments later, tells him she wants to become a vampire. The
drugs begin to affect Angel's judgement, and moments later, the persona of
Angelus emerges. After an exchange of evil pleasantries, Cordelia and Wesley
manage to knock him out and keep him contained until the drugs wear off. The
next day Angel apologizes to Cordelia and Wesley for his behavior.
The Long: Unfinished.
Creature Feature
Although some people wonder about the mechanics of Angel's curse, I would
guess that it was never lifted, and the effects of the drug merely made
Angel less inhibited, letting his demon side which is always just below
the surface, rise to dominance. One interesting note is that Angel displays
superhuman leaping ability. We get a well done example of vampires not
having reflections in this episode.
Cool Quotes
- Angel: ''Cordelia, you're here, and you brought a
cross.''
Cordelia: ''Along with three double half-caf, non-fat, skinny
lattes.''
Angel: ''...and a cross.''
Cordelia: ''Well, judging by the outfit, I guess it's safe to come
in. Evil Angel never would have worn those pants. Where is
Rebecca?''
I just love the Cordelia style.
- Cordelia: ''You don't think I wasn't ready for this, do you?
That I hadn't prepared for it? Why do you think I have a stake stashed in my
desk, a cross in my bag? I think about this happening, every single
day!''
Angel: ''That's just drinking water.''
Cordelia: ''Fresh from a mountain spring, delivered right to our
door, then blessed every second Tuesday by Father Mackie, the local parish
priest, while you're down in the Bat-cave, sleeping through the better
part of the day. You don't believe me? Have some!''
I think Cordelia's acting strength is at improvisation.
References
- Wesley: ''You might try shouting fire, it's not technically
a crowded theatre.''
The phrase ''You can't shout fire in a crowded theatre.'' is a common
expression to denote the limits of free speech under U.S. constitutional
law.
- Cordelia: ''One day, I might, yes, many years from now, when
I've lost my looks a little. Do not laugh.''
The play Cordelia is in is A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen, written in 1879.
Cordelia is playing the part of Nora Helmer. It has been made into a film
many times, most recently in 1991. Plot: Nora Helmer has years earlier
committed a forgery in order to save the life of her authoritarian husband
Torvald. Now she is being blackmailed lives in fear of her husband's finding
out and of the shame such a revelation would bring to his career. But when
the truth comes out, Nora is shocked to learn where she really stands in her
husband's esteem.
(Thanks to Mabel and Crystal from the Watcher's Diary for helping find this.)
- Rebecca: ''Oh god. Who called E.T.?''
Wesley: ''Emma Thompson?''
Cordelia: ''Entertainment Tonight, doofus.''
Emma Thompson is an
actress born in London in 1959.
Entertainment Tonight is
television show which reports entertainment news. They have an official web
site at http://etonline.com/.
- Cordelia: ''We have to use this now before she's just another
E! True Hollywood Story!''
E! True Hollywood Story is a series of made for television movies that have
biographies of famous actors.
- Rebecca: ''Huh. Well, stop by. I'll give you a private
screening of the episode I didn't win the Emmy for.''
An Emmy is a television award for excellence given by The Academy of
Television Arts and Sciences. They have a web site at http://www.emmys.org/.
- Angel: ''Have you tried the police?''
Rebecca: ''Oliver has been after me to but then I'd just be
hand-feeding the story to the Enquirer. No thanks.''
The National Enquirer is tabloid magazine which is famous for it's less
then completely accurate and rather sensational stories. They have a web
site at http://www.nationalenquirer.com/.
- Angel: ''The car that ran you down was a green, freshly
painted '76 Chevy Nova. I caught the plates, ran the vehicle ID. It was
stolen.''
Chevrolet is of course the huge car manufacturer, part of General
Motors. Their web site is at http://www.chevrolet.com/. The Nova is
a model of car manufactured by them from 1962-1979 which is highly respected
as a muscle car by collectors.
(Thanks to Matt Cyran for the picture.)
- Cordelia: ''Right. He could be helping us both! Think of the
karma!''
Karma, in Buddhism and Hinduism, is the sum of ones actions in one of his
successive existences, thought to decide the fate of the next.
- Rebecca: ''Which is impossible. Bela Lugosi, Gary Oldman,
they're vampires.''
Angel: ''Frank Langella was the only performance I believed but...''
Bela Lugosi (1882-1956)
played the part of the vampire Count Dracula in the 1931 film Dracula, which
is probably the most famous rendition of Dracula in history.
He became known for the roll and played Dracula numerous times including
the 1948 comedy Abbott And
Costello Meet Frankenstein.
Gary Oldman
played the part of the vampire Count Dracula in the 1992 film Dracula. An interesting bit of
trivia is that regular watchers of Buffy heard him in the episode
Lover's Walk, he was the guy singing My Way on Spike's
radio as he left town!
Frank Langella played
the part of the vampire Count Dracula in the 1979 film Dracula. One of his recent works
is the 1998 film Small
Soldiers, where he supplied a voice to Archer along side Buffy's
Sarah Michelle
Gellar.
- Rebecca: ''According to those, I've slept with Ernest
Borgnine, and I'm bulimic.''
Angel: ''I hear Borgnine is a very skilled lover.''
Ernest Borgnine is
of course the classic film actor born in 1917. One of his recent works
is the 1998 film Small
Soldiers, where he supplied a voice to Kip Killagin along side Buffy's
Sarah Michelle
Gellar.
- Cordelia: ''Along with three double half-caf, non-fat, skinny
lattes.''
A latte is an espresso coffee topped with steamed frothed milk. Espresso is
a brewing process by which the classic, dark-roasted cup of
black coffee, full-bodied but aromatic, is made, and it is possibly the most
difficult and potentially the most expensive way to make coffee. The word
''espresso'' derives from the Italian verb meaning ''to put under
pressure,'' and that is exactly how the coffee is made. Boiling water
and steam are forced through very finely ground coffee, preferably one
without too much acidity, to produce a unique style of coffee with bite and
great persistence on the palate. Also referenced by Rupert in Wild
At Heart.
- Cordelia: ''...and the Oscar goes to...''
The Oscars (a.k.a. the Academy Awards) are the annual presentation of awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. An Oscar is considered the highest honor one can receive in show business (and drive's one's asking price up as well). They have an official web site at http://www.oscar.com/. Also referenced by Xander in Beer Bad.
(Thanks to the BuffyGuide for this entry.)
- Rebecca: ''I went shopping with Cordelia to pick out a thank
you gift for you, but what do you get the guy who has already seen
everything? So I figured what's better than Dom?''
Champagne is a sparkling white wine, traditionally made from a mixture of
grapes grown in the old French province of Champagne; the best is from the
Marne valley. It was reputedly developed in the 17th cent. by a monk, Dom
Perignon. The fermented and blended wine is bottled, then sweetened and
allowed to ferment further. The carbonic acid left in the bottle after the
final fermentation gives champagne its sparkle.
- Cordelia: ''You know they close of stores for her? Oh, and
lunch at Mirabelle's. I had the most to-die-for veal filet with a light
truffle marinade, and...''
Mirabelle Restaurant & Patio Bar is a restaurant at 8768 Sunset Boulevard in
West Hollywood, California. Their phone number is 310-659-6022. An
interesting bit of trivia is that before her acting career took off Charisma
Carpenter worked at Mirabelle's as a waitress.
(Thanks to the Marsia from the Watcher's Diary for helping with this entry.)
- Wesley: ''What did you give him?''
Rebecca: ''Does it matter?''
Cordelia: ''Well, if he's all homicidal, I'm thinking YEAH!''
Rebecca: ''Doximall.''
Doximall is...
- Angel: ''What are you going to do? Melt me?''
This is probably a reference to the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, where the
Wicked Witch of the West was melted by being splashed with water. This film was referenced in What's My Line Part 2 by Xander, in The Pack by Buffy, and by Amilyn in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. This film was also the inspiration for scenes in Fear, Itself and Nightmares.
(Thanks to Poppedijn for finding this picture.)
- Cordelia: ''Fresh from a mountain spring, delivered right to
our door, then blessed every second Tuesday by Father Mackie, the local
parish priest, while you're down in the bat-cave, sleeping through the
better part of the day. You don't believe me? Have some!''
The bat-cave is the headquarters of Batman, a costumed crime fighter from
DC Comics that inspired several television
shows, cartoons and films. Also referenced by Doyle in City Of.
Continuity
- Angel: ''...and I thought I knew eternity.''
AND
Angel: ''...but I almost had it sucked into hell once, too.''
AND
Angel: ''I mean, I've been to hell but that was so much worse!''
Becoming
Part 2 - In order to save the world from being sucked into hell, Buffy
had to send Angel there instead.
Faith, Hope and
Trick - Angel mysteriously returns to Earth several months later, but
for him hundreds of years passed in hell.
- Cordelia: ''That's Oliver Simon!''
Wesley: ''Who?''
Cordelia: ''Only one of the most important talent managers in this
town! I was at a party with him. You were there!''
Angel: ''Right. He gave me his card.''
City Of - Angel met Oliver when he dropped Tina
off to the party and bumped into Cordelia there.
- Cordelia: ''I have a card in here somewhere.''
AND
Cordelia: ''No! He can fight off donkey demons, who rip peoples
guts out, but he can't help one defenseless actress from a psycho? What is
your thing?''
Lonely Hearts - Cordelia had business cards made
up for Angel Investigations. The donkey demon Cordelia refers to is probably
the burrower demon Talamour.
- Cordelia: ''Oh no! Not now! God! What's this I see in my
vision? Oh. It's a figure, a woman. It's Rebecca. She's in danger. Terrible
danger.''
Parting Gifts - Cordelia learned she had been
given the gift of visions from Doyle.
- Rebecca: ''How long? A hundred years?''
Angel: ''Two hundred, and some change.''
The Prodigal - It was revealed Angel was born in
1727, making him about 273 years old, not counting the years he spent in
hell.
- Wesley: ''You're worried about the curse. I wouldn't
be.''
Cordelia: ''Hey, you weren't around the last time Angel went
mental. I, on the other hand, was on the first wave of the clean-up crew. He
knows perfect happiness, he goes evil. So don't tell me not to
worry.''
Innocence
- Cordelia is probably referring to the time she had to clean up after
destroying the Judge, who Angel joined up with right after losing his soul.
- Wesley: ''Angel's moment of true happiness occurred because he
was with Buffy.''
Surprise
- Angel got happy when he had sex with Buffy Summers after they lost
fighting the Judge and hid at his place.
- Rebecca: ''Cordelia says you've saved the world.''
Angel: ''Couple times I helped.''
Angel helped save the world in The Harvest,
Prophecy Girl and
The Zeppo.
Goofs
- When Angel first glances at the car it has a huge cloud of exhaust
coming out of the tail pipe, the camera is away for less them a second, then
returns to show no exhaust behind the car.
- When Angel opens the door into the alley, you can see his reflection in
the surface of the door, even though he is a vampire and should cast no reflection.
Note: Although some people wonder how Angel was able to enter Rebecca's
home, she did invite him over to watch the episode of her show, this
probably allowed him to enter.

Points Of View
Mathew:
A little slow and predictable. Not too much excitement. It was good to
see Cordelia stand up to Angel. One thing I dislike is the habit started
by fans and now being used on the show of calling evil Angel Angelus. It's
the same guy! Oh well.
