What happens now?: Adjusting

Beep Beep Beep Be…
For the second day in a row Buffy awoke to the sound of an alarm clock. But this morning there were no warm beams of sunlight to help wake her up. In fact if she listened closely she could have sworn that it was raining. ‘Rain, in California, in the middle of April, Not likely.’ She thought and pushed it out of her mind and opened her eyes. ‘Whoa!’ she glanced around the room. It was quite nice, with yellow and blue wallpaper and green curtains. As she sat there the memories of the night before came flooding back.

She glanced at the alarm clock. It read 6:50. Too early. She rolled over and tried to get back to sleep. But instead of her head meeting the soft pillow she received a deep paper cut from the envelope that lay by her head. ‘What the hell is this?’ she thought and opened it. Inside was a letter of instruction from the counsel of watchers and it went as follows:

Dear Miss Summers,
If you are reading this it would appear that you have made it safely to your destination and managed to survive the night. Here is some background information on your alter ego so you don’t accidentally do or say anything wrong. You are twelve years old and attend the Folkestone School for girls. Your mum will call you at seven to get ready for school. You catch the bus at the bus stop at the road and your timetable is attached to the back of this letter along with a map and other useful information.

Remember, you are the only one that can stop any of the prophesised events from happening. Do us proud

Quentin Travers
Head Watcher of the Counsel of Watchers

Great, school. She glanced at the clock it now read 6:59. And as if on cue a woman off about forty popped her head round the door and said that it was time for school. Buffy swung her legs out of bed and almost stood on Angel as she forgot that he had fallen asleep beside her bed. He jerked awake. “Whoa, that was close.” Then he gave her, his best good morning smile and kissed her lightly. Buffy indulged in this before realising that she had to get ready for school and pulled away. “I would love to stay, but you know sacred duty, new life, blah blah blah” And with that she walked out of the room and down the small corridor to the bathroom.

The rest of the morning and the bus ride to school had been fairly uneventful. And her day of classes hadn’t been much better. But she couldn’t help but smile when she returned home and Giles told her, her first new slaying assignment. “Buffy you will go on Patrol tonight and be on the lookout for two Texan vampires. Brothers go by the name of Gorch.” Buffy struggled to keep from laughing. “Well I don’t know my way around yet, so maybe I should ask…” Giles sighed. “Yes you may take Angel with you.” Buffy grinned, “But. Keep your minds on the job at hand” Giles added as an after thought. Having heard way to many stories from Xander of what happens when Buffy and Angel go on Patrol together. Buffy smiled at him sweetly. “What else would we be doing?” Xander, who was standing behind Buffy coughed loudly before returning to eating his pizza. But not after Buffy gave him a nasty glare.

“Did I hear you mention something about patrol?” Angel sauntered into the kitchen and slid his arms lovingly around Buffy’s waist. “Attention all people dead boy has entered the building!” Angel turned and shot Xander a fiery glare before turning back and getting the details about the patrol off Giles. Buffy always laughed at Xander’s pet name for Angel. He had been calling him ‘Dead Boy’ for years. Even if he didn’t know he had. Then she remembered before they had come here that Spike had used to call him ‘peaches’ or ‘Poof.’ She laughed silently to herself. ‘Why didn’t anyone just call him by his name?’

Later that night…
Breathing heavily Buffy pulled away from Angel and Grinned at him lovingly. “You know, as much as this is very, very much what I would like to be doing. We really have to go Gorch hunting!” She said with slight sadness in her voice. So they turned and started on their way. They swept through one of the small towns two graveyards and dusted three vamps. But as off yet there was no sight of the Gorches. So they decided that it was getting far to close to dawn and they had better return to the house before Angel turned into a crispy kreme.

Back at home…
“So did you have fun on patrol?” Willow asked Buffy with a mischievous twinkle in her eye. Buffy tried to give Willow her. ‘Please-don’t-jump-to-conclusions’ face. But all she could manage to do was to laugh. “So did you get any patrolling done at all?” she asked grinning her head off. “Yeah we got an hour and a half’s worth done but then we just got incredibly bored, the unlife around here sucks!” Buffy answered giggling. It was very, very late and everyone even Angel was asleep. Buffy looked at him adoringly. “He looks so cute when he’s asleep. He really looks like an Angel” Willow said following Buffy’s direction of glance. Buffy smiled. Yes he did look adorable, yes he did look like an Angel. And best of all…He belonged to her!
