Spike looked at the detritus of wrapping and bags littering the flat in the wake of Buffy's whirlwind tour.

She had descended on them, bearing inappropriate gifts and ear-jarring California teen-speak. Spike had spent a week smiling politely and keeping his distance; he wondered how he'd ever found her behaviour cute. Even Harmony had shown emotional development in comparison.

While he was happy that Dawn got to take a break with her sister, he was quietly pleased that Buffy was heading back to Rome and he had a sneaking suspicion that Dawn felt the same. You can't pick your family.
