Rising Dreams: An Ancient Artifact

“Buffy! Have you heard the news?” Giles asked as he came through the front door of the Summer’s home holding a book. He took one look at the four grave faces staring back at him and said “I guess you have”

They all stared at Giles each not knowing what to say. It was eight in the evening, Buffy, Willow, Xander and Tara had been researching for more information about the Paramus but it was of no avail.

“I have some good news. Hope it will cheer you guys up a bit” said Giles. “You found out how to kill the Paramus?” Willow asked eagerly.

“Not exactly. But I did find out how it was killed last time it had arisen” said Giles. “How?” the four of them asked in unison.

Giles opened the book he was carrying and began to read out. “’Carlestius’ an ancient artifact that can make a person control their dream. The ‘Carlestius’ was last seen in China in 1900.”

“How is that good news?” Buffy asked with particular emphasis on ‘that’. “We all know now what is needed to kill the Paramus.” said Giles. “Yeah, but it was last seen in China, the country!” Xander stated.

Willow told Giles about the incantation. Which also was last seen in China over a century ago, but was never used.

“There goes a whole afternoon of researching” said Xander. “But there has to be some other way of controlling dreams, a spell maybe?” Tara asked. Willow shook her head in disagreement. “No. The spells aren’t powerful enough. And even if it did work, we wouldn’t be able vanquish the demon completely without the incantation.”

“C’mon guys! we’ve defeated bigger, eviler demons in the past. We’ll figure a way out of this one” Xander said trying to lighten the mood.

“Sitting here idly isn’t helping! Two people are already dead. We need to do something fast!” Buffy said standing up.

“We are trying our best Buffy.” said Giles. “Well, that doesn't seem to be enough” said Buffy. “We could go to China.” Xander suggested.

“Trying to find the artifact in China would take too long. The answer to our problem must lie in Sunnydale itself” Buffy said as she put on her coat and walked towards the door.

“Where are you going?” Giles asked her. “Trying to get some information out of a person who was around a century ago.” said Buffy. She walked out of the house closing the door behind her and sprinted towards the graveyard.
