Life in L.A.: A Very Hot Vampire Older Brother

by Melissa Summers

“Spike!” Dawn exclaimed, running up and hugging the platinum haired vampire, who embraced her willingly.

“Nibbler! How’ve you been?” Spike asked, surprised at seeing the young girl in Wolfram and Hart.

“Good, you?” Dawn questioned, pulling away so she could look him over.

“Incorporeal.” Spike replied. “But I’m better now.”

“Oh. Cool.” Dawn said. She hugged him again. “Oh, they said you were alive, but I didn’t know if it was true!”

Spike smiled. “Well, it is, and believe me it’s not that I’m not happy to see you but...”

“...what am I doing here.” Dawn finished for him.

“Smart girl.” Spike noted as Dawn looked up in pride.

“Well, in truth, I have no idea.” She answered, frowning slightly.

“Maybe not that smart.” Angel muttered sarcastically, unnoticed behind Spike.

“Oh, hi Angel.” Dawn said, glancing behind Spike briefly.

“There you have it, I’m getting the brush off for Spike again. Again! First by Buffy and now her sister! What, does it run in the family?” Angel said angrily, heading over to the freezer. He pulled out an ice pack and cracked it on a nearby table.

But unlike her sister, who had denied it, Dawn merely said “Yeah, I guess so.”

“See, she missed me!” Spike taunted Angel.

“Yeah, I’m so sad Buffy’s annoying little sister didn’t miss me!” Angel said back.

“Well, it’s kind of hard to miss someone who sat in the dark and brooded so much you hardly even knew he was there.” Dawn snapped, causing an “OH!” from Spike.

“I brood a lot less now.” Angel said defensively, as Gunn and Fred quietly shook their heads behind his back, mouthing ‘no’.

Dawn held back a smile, and turned on her Summers Sarcasm. “Oh, gee, I’m so proud of you! Have you stopped lurking in the shadows as well?” She asked.

“You go Nibbler!” Spike said, giving Dawn a high five. Dawn felt a few butterflies in her stomach flutter.

She had always had a small crush on Spike. Of course now she didn’t like him nearly as much, mostly because she knew he loved Buffy, and didn’t want to interfere. Now she looked up to him more as an older brother. A very hot vampire older brother. And why not? After all, he had helped take care of her numerous times, and loved her like a little sister. A hot teenage little sister, if she did say so herself.

So she smiled and continued. “Oh, and by the way, a caveman would kick an astronaut’s ass!”

“Now, now, Little Bit, I don’t believe Buffy would appreciate you using that kind of language...so if any swearing is to be done, it’ll be done by me.” Spike said, before turning on Angel. “Did you hear that broody-pants? A caveman would kick an astronauts ass, ha!”

Angel, who looked more annoyed now than ever, was mumbling something suspiciously like “Yeah, that coming from a stupid kid and a vampire with radioactive hair.”

“It’s platinum!” Dawn snapped loudly. Then lowering her voice, she added “And I’m not stupid.”

“You tell him Dawnie!” Spike said putting an arm around her. “You’re growing up to be quite the fighter, Little Bit.” He wiped a pretend tear from his eye. “They grow up so fast.”

Just then they heard someone calling in the hallway.

“DAWN? DAWN!”

It was Buffy.

“I’m in here Buff!” Dawn called. She and Spike turned around, his arm still protectively around her in an affectionate way. He had to admit he had missed the Little Bit.

“Dawn, you shouldn’t run off like that, what did I tell you?” Buffy said, in her older-sister-on-the-boundary-of-mom voice.

“I’m fine, thanks for asking.” Dawn said sarcastically. “Gunn took me to get some cocoa.” She said, holding up her cup and taking a sip.

Buffy stopped short as she noticed Angel and Spike. She was not quite sure how to start, what to say...

Luckily she didn’t have to.

“Angel, Lorne called, he’s running a bit behind, something about taking in a show with some clients, but he should be back soon.” Gunn piped up from behind Angel.

“Thanks.” Angel said, but his eyes were transfixed on Buffy, as were Spike’s.

Buffy took a deep breath. “This will be easier if I talk to you separately.” She started. “Angel, I have an important matter to discuss with you, concerning Dawn. Do you mind if we go to your office?”

Angel, secretly cheering in his head for being chosen first, nodded. “Of course.”

Buffy turned to Spike. “Spike, would you mind waiting with Dawn until I get back? This will only take a few minutes.”

“Sure, love.” Spike nodded as he watched Buffy follow Angel out. He felt a small pang inside at being chosen second, but figured she had her reasons.

“She’s saving the best for last.” Dawn assured him comfortingly. Fred and Gunn, feeling the uncomfortable tension, told them they’d be at the lab, and left the room.

“So, Nibbler, what have you all been up to?”
