Together at Last: Part Four
by Katherine Nell
Spike found her grave easily. It was almost as if she were pulling him there. He placed a flower on her grave, and gave it a sad smile.
"It’s a pimpernel, luv," he told her. "A symbol of the brief time we had together."
Spike felt himself choke up. He reached into his pocket pulled out the letter.
But when ye come, and all the flow’rs are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You’ll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an Ave there for me
Spike knelt on Buffy’s grave, and did something uncharacteristic of demons: he prayed for his soul.
"I beg you, whoever you are, don’t let me lose her. I couldn’t have her in this world, so I’m pleading with you to let me have her now. I know that to you I’m just a demon, but Buffy was able to see past that. Don’t you understand? She is my soul. Don’t let me be apart from her any longer. We were in love. I need her. Please let us be together. Don’t take her away from me. Don’t...."
Spike broke down into tears. The letter fluttered slightly in the breeze.
And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be
For you will bend and tell me that you love me
And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me
"I love you, Buffy," Spike said as he leaned forward and gently kissed the soft earth beneath him.
He whispered it repeatedly until the sunrise brought them together at last.
