Part Seven
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The Magus had thought the Princess Katherine was dead and blamed us." The three humans, Oz, Willow and Giles were giving Lexington their full attention. Giles was rather intrigued by the story this small green gargoyle was telling them. Although his interest right now was on a personal level, deep down he noted that he was also paying so much attention because he would have to note this visit in his journal. The council was rather strict on activities such as that.
"He was in such a rage that without thinking he used the Grimorium..."
"The Grimorium?"
Giles cleared his throat and stammered out, "Are you referring to the Grimorium Arcanorum?"
Lexington nodded. "That's the one. The Magus carried it around with him everywhere at the time."
Giles looked to Willow. "The Grimorium Arcanorum is a rather old and very powerful spell book."
Lexington continued. "Like I said, the Magus blamed us and used the Grimorium to cast a spell that turned us to stone at night. Goliath said that when he returned, he found us like that. He had saved Katherine and when the Magus saw her, he knew he had done something really wrong. Goliath demanded that he fix what he done, but he couldn't. The Viking's Leader, Hakon, had burned the page with the counter-spell."
"So that left Goliath all alone, didn't it? You said that the Vikings had destroyed all the stone gargoyles that morning." Willow felt so sad at hearing everything they'd gone through.
"The Magus told Goliath that the spell would be lifted when the castle rose above the clouds. Goliath understood that he would not see that happen in his lifetime, so he asked the Magus to cast the spell one more time. He asked him to turn him into stone as well."
"And you say it was this man, David Xanatos, that was able to break the spell. How exactly did he accomplish this?" Giles could tell that this was no minor curse that The Magus placed on Goliath and the others.
"Xanatos had the castle shipped to America block by block. He then put it back together atop the tallest skyscraper in New York, which was of course his. It was just high enough, that we were literally above the clouds. That night, we were free of the spell."
"How did you meet Elisa. After what happened to you all, I'd think you'd be less likely to trust humans." Willow had noticed how close they all were with the detective.
"Well, we first met her the night the spell was broken." Lexington told them how Xanatos had turned out to be bad and had staged an attack on the castle to trick them into helping him out. Elisa had visited when the battle had spilled over to the streets, endangering everyday citizens. He told them that since day, she had been their link with the rest of the world as well as a really close friend. Their conversation was interrupted when the library's computer beeped.
"The search is done." Willow popped up out of her chair and headed for the computer terminal. She quickly scanned the information that filtered across the screen. "There was a report of abnormally thick fog a couple nights ago along the docks. It's not really the time of year for it because the weather isn't cold enough."
Lexington and Oz followed Willow over to the terminal and scanned the information she had pulled up. "There are a couple canneries along that particular stretch of docks. Maybe we should call Buffy and tell her to go search those."
"I don't think that will be necessary."
Willow gasped, surprised by the unexpected voice so close to her. Lexington, sensing Willow's fear, took a fighting stance between her and the intruder. His eyes glowed fiercely and his wings were extended as he prepared to attack if needed. Bronx was quick to jump to the aid of his friend and edged closer, his eyes also glowing with an eerie light as he growled deep in his throat.
"Easy puppy," the voice said to Bronx.
"Angel!" Willow called out. "Its okay guys, he's a friend. He likes to make quiet entrances."
A dark-haired man stepped into the light. He looked to be not much older than Willow, but his eyes spoke of decades of knowledge. He walked forward slowly with his hands raised palms forward. "I think I might have found your missing elves."
Bronx hesitantly sniffed Angel and then turned toward Willow, his head tilted in a questioning manner. Lexington voiced his question.
"He looks human, but he doesn't smell human."
Willow smiled at her green friend. "That's because he's a vampire. But he's a special vampire. Remember how Buffy explained what a vampire was? Well Angel here is the same only he still has his human soul."
Lexington's eyes grew wide. "How," he asked quietly.
The forthcoming answer was cut short as Giles cleared his throat and interrupted. "So sorry to intrude but I believe Angel mentioned our missing elves."
"Oh yes, our elves, the ones that are missing. Or were missing if Angel found them." Willow brushed a stay lock of hair behind her ear as everyone turned his or her attention to Angel.
"I believe so. I came across a vampire setting up shop in one of the old canneries. I was going to take care of him, but something about him caught my attention." He looked down, as if embarrassed to finish his sentence. "I found him ordering around the elves. And well, to make a long story short, he thinks he's Santa Claus."
Giles rubbed his chin, "Did you say Santa Claus?"
Angel nodded, "There's no doubt about it. He actually had the elves spread out at work tables creating toys."
Giles took of his glasses and rubbed the bring of his nose, "What in the world would posses him to think he was Santa Claus."

Elisa turned to Buffy. "How do you think Willow and Lexington are doing?"
"I'm sure they're fine. Giles is great. If there is a way to find your missing fairies and what not, he'll find them."
"Elves," a deep booming voice said behind them, "elves and the Fairy Queen."
"Sorry Goliath. You'll have to forgive me. I've seen a lot of things during my time as the Slayer. Lots of weird stuff while living on the hellmouth. But elves and Fairy Queens, not to mention actually living gargoyles, weren't something I expected."
Goliath smiled at the young woman, "Vampires and a Vampire Slayer were things I didn't expect."
Buffy grinned, "Touché."
"Hey guys and gals, I suggest we contact home base and see if they've found anything."
Elisa dialed the number for Sunnydale's High School library and hoped they were any closer to solving this mystery.
