Only a Dream: Dreamscapes

by SweetDelirium

She remembers the betrayal, she feels his deliberate touches, grasping handfuls of her hair. They stand in a sandstorm, in the lost depths of the desert they've never been to outside a dream. The sand rises and falls like the air she requires in her lungs, her chest swells and she knows this is a dream. Untouched they are, the sand just avoiding them, pure she thinks, innocent.

Only a dream.

He stares at her with a longing to which he can never express and she feels like dying right there. She could, she wants to let go. His eyes warn her not to indulge such thoughts. A part of her listens and she knows she sealed some clandestined fate.

I'll never leave you even if you can't find me I'll be near.

His eyes tell her this, yet she hears the words as if they were spoken softly into her ear. The tender words of reassurance echoing hollowly in the shell of her ear, in the depths of her now empty soul. She knows he's dying right then, somewhere in the world cold and alone without her.

I am here with you now, but I'm not going to say goodbye.

"Of course you never do." She scoffs, the tears rolling in waves down her face betraying her body. She tries to harden herself, accept it like a warrior. It's a defeat, not a conquer.

I don't say goodbye because goodbyes are final.

"Isn't death?"

No, it's different. It's the next step. The thirteenth step.

They entwine their fingers, and he stokes the lines of her face with her fingertips as well as his.She recalls a distant memory of words never spoken, only in her imagination.

If I was blind I would see you.

This was only in her mind as well, she knew that.

It's true, his eyes tell her.

She's asleep in her bed in Rome, the humid air causing her camisole to stick to her skin, skin he is not touching.

For he is begining to fade.

"Kiss me? For luck?"

For you or for me? He smirks.

"Both, a prelude to the future." She tells him.

He never denies her but always damns her, forsakes her by kissing her deeper and fiercer than he ever could in the reality they are both shying away from. Her heart pounds, her blood roars and he kisses the crown of her hair, cooling her emotions.

She memorizes the velvety texture of his skin, touches his face, gazes into those deep black eyes she loves so much. Those eyes where she sees the heaven she once inhabited for those short months, the heaven she longs for. The heaven she will yearn for until her dying day. She thought herself once incomplete not being there, now she was broken for not being there to show him the beauty. She smiles, noticing he's bleeding.

"Does it hurt?'' Her meak voice making her feel inadequate.

It's a new feeling. He regards her with soft eyes.

Did it hurt for you?

"No."

She raises his hand to her lips kissing his fingertips, tasting his sweet blood. The sandstorm rises higher, engulfing them further, yet still far away to allow her to kiss his mouth. She tastes the sweet salts of his tears, he hates to leave her but death is beckoning. You cannot deny death, she remembers having succumbed to it twice.

"I'll see you....?"

Oneday.

The sand, the storm envelopes her, a whirlwind and he's gone.

She awakens in her humid room in Rome, the french doors to her blacony overlooking the city are open and she smells the sweet sea. Her heart is broken and she knows why. She sobs into the night, knowing the battle in her heart to wait until her end. Knowing his end came to soon.

But his journey was just begining. Burrowing deep beneath the covers, alllowing her tears to lull her back to sleep.

She cannot wait to see what he has to show her when she sees him again.
