Immortal Words: Immortal Words
by Livya
The town felt empty, apart from him. Scared, helpless and alone, he walked the blackened streets of Sunnydale, praying for his life to end. He'd made such a mess of everything, and now he had just run away from it. Good old Xander Harris, leaving everyone else to clear up the mess he'd made. Well, of course he did. Wasn't that what he was best at? And even if the old man hadn't been telling the truth, he would have still hurt her so badly if she'd ever found out. He raised his face towards the cloudy sky, and gave up. He let out all the anguish that had been building up for the past months, and his tears splashed onto the pavement, like the raindrops that were falling from the sky. He'd screwed everything up with Anya, and for what? For a love that could never be? For someone he could never have? For a lady so beautiful? Whenever she smiled, he thought his heart would explode. He knew that she was the one for him. But he had screwed up ever having her as more than a friend long ago. And now she had someone else.

"Xander! Xander!" It was no use. Even if he was here, he'd run away so he obviously didn't want to be near people, especially her, so shouting his name was not the best of plans. Way to go, Will. Brilliant move, there. She could kick herself for being so stupid, but she was just so worried about him. She cared for him so much it hurt her very core. She had thought she was over him when she fell in love with Oz, but then when he left, she fell harder than she ever had before for Xander. Then there was Tara - just a last resort when she had been feeling lonely, and then when Tara fell in love with her, Willow hadn't got the heart to say goodbye. Xander had always had a special place in her heart. Now he had her whole heart. He was her world, her life, her love. But he loved Anya. Or so she had thought, up until now...

He turned. He could hear someone calling his name. Was it...? Could it be...? Willow. Again, he heard the soft female voice call out his name. It was definately her - he just knew. He began to run, but stopped. He was running towards something he could never have. His Willow was no longer his. She was Tara's. Even when her and Oz had been together, he had still had a part of her that no one could ever have taken away, but now... Now it seemed as though Tara had taken every single part of Willow and written "Tara's - Do Not Touch", and Willow had no soap to wash it all off with. It was hopeless... He turned a corner, and then another, and then another, hoping to turn and see her face. But, as he turned one final corner, hope turned to reality.

And there he was. As clear as day, standing in front of her, tear-stains and all. There, in the middle of a backalley in downtown Sunnydale, stood her one true love. No words were spoken, none were needed. As he fell, she caught him. They sank to the floor together, as he sobbed out all the tension he'd been carrying inside onto her soft sweet-smelling shoulder. They stayed there, twisted into each other, for a long time, until Willow decided she had to say something. Not just anything, she had to tell Xander how she felt. But she didn't get a chance. As she moved her head to look into his eyes, he moved his to kiss her. As their lips suddenly locked, a shooting spark of electric chemistry shot between them, making their hearts miss a beat and their legs turn to jelly. As they pulled apart, at the same moment, they both whispered the immortal words that would hold them together forever.
"I love you"
