Working Holiday: Chapter 1 - The Start of Summer

It was loud, it was busy and it was hot. It looked like the whole youth population of Sunnydale had turned out to welcome the start of summer. Buffy elbowed her way through the throng to the table Xander had managed to grab. It was the first day of the Summer Break and the summer stretched ahead in a golden, dazzling haze.

"Wow, I've never seen it so busy," Willow fanned her face with her hand.

Buffy flopped down. "I know. Everyone's turned out tonight."

"Well at least we don't have to worry about things that go 'bump in the night'." Xander took a long swig of cola. "Oh, that's good. That's very good." He took another gulp. From where they sat they had a perfect view of Cordelia and a nameless jock in a letterman jacket dancing in the middle of the dancefloor.

"College Guy." Stated Buffy.

"Are you going to your Dad's for the summer?" asked Willow.

"Only for a couple of weeks. He's so busy now and so am I. What with training everyday. Do you know what Giles has done?" the other two shook their heads. "He asked Synder if I could help him put the Library onto computer with Ms. Calendar, beautiful cover story don't you think? Synder said 'yes' and guess what?" they shook their heads again. "I get paid for it!" Buffy grinned. "I get paid to beat Giles up!"

Xander started to chuckle. "It's your dream job!" he managed to get out between laughs.

The music changed. The band had finished playing and the DJ put on that old party classic YMCA. Xander grabbed Willow and Buffy by an arm and dragged them onto the dancefloor. For a few hours at least they forgot about their destinies and become normal seventeen year olds.

It was not to last though.
