Just a Phase: Just a Phase

by Chelle

Just outside the windows the sun had begun it's daily decent behind the horizon. The library was quiet and dormant, the usual after-school occupants having left minutes earlier. Oz alone was still there, preparing for another full moon night, the second of the month so far.

Leaving his backpack on the table, Oz slowly trudged toward the cage, not eager for the night ahead. Although he rarely remembered anything after the pain, he knew that he always woke up feeling as though he had just drowned his sorrows in a night filled with all kinds of harsh liquor. He reached up and ran his fingers through his hair, leaving trails in the sandy red hair.

Walking in, he closed the chain-link steel door behind him and reached through the links to close the lock. Securely locked in, he walked to the shelf and picked up the first dusty book he saw, flipping idly through the pages, fighting back the urge to sneeze with the dust. Settling on a small passage about a random demon species, Oz read the words with one eye on the window. He set the book back down.

The library doors wooshed, signaling the appearance of tonight's warden. Footsteps clicked heavily on the floor, growing louder as they approached the cage. Oz looked up to see who was the lucky one assigned to tonight's watch. He locked eyes with Faith. She grinned at him.

"Hi," he greeted. His voice was heavy, skin tingling already like thousands of needles were trying to push their way out. He looked away, waiting for the seconds to pass. He glanced back up to see her leaned on the door of the cage, looking at him.

"Hi, Oz," she said with light tone. Her tongue darted out of her mouth and passed over her dark stained lips. She looked him up and down, making him wonder if she was sizing him up, or imagining different ways to use that tongue.

He rolled his head down, looking up at her incredulously. "Something wrong?"

Faith slowly ran her fingers along the ridges and cold of the steel links, bending over and nearly spilling from her black leather halter. "I was just thinking that I hadn't seen nearly enough action lately. Since it looks like I'm stuck here for the night, you're going to have to provide the tumble."

"I'm taken," he said, not breaking eye contact. Shadows were beginning to appear on the floors, shrouded by the blue glow of the moon. Faith's face was illuminated by the corner of the moon that peaked over the window pane. She threw her head back and laughed.

"Slow down, soldier," she said, trailing a finger across her collar bone. Tracing the curves of her breast, she dipped her fingers between them and pulled out a key. She held it up for him to see. "But if you're lucky I still might spank your furry little bottom."

"No," he stood and backed against wall. "I don't want you to get hurt."

"I think I could handle myself," she assured, key still grasped between her thumb and forefinger.

"Let's not find out." He said before doubling over and clutching his stomach. Pain seared through him like a hot poker as moonlight spilled over him like water. Faith's eyes grew large and predatory as she watched him change. She licked her lips again. "Don't, he grunted out, looking up at her. His eyes were black as coal, not a sentimeter of while to them. Sharp, fanged teeth peeked out from his open mouth, his lips thick and rubbery.

Oz doubled over again, reaching his hand up and clawing at his shirt. It fell in ribbons to the ground, revealing his chest, still white and hairless, his muscles rippling and bulging beneath his skin. His arms stretched, his fingernails expanding and darkening, finally ending in razor points. Goosebumps raised on his skin before bursting open and pushing out dark coarse hair.

His light hair turned dark and grew long, his ears growing and appearing between his mane of hair in peaks, tipped in light tufts. Ridges appeared on his face as he looked up at her, bearing his mouthful of deadly teeth. He lurched forward and his hands hit the ground, his jeans ripping away with his expanding legs. With a husky growl he lunged at Faith, hitting the cage door with full force. The door rattled and shook but didn't give. She jumped back and grinned.

"Alright," she acknowledged darkly around a sneaky grin. "Let's get dirty."

Sliding the key into the lock, she set him free with a satisfying click.
