Old Meets New: The Cheerleader
by Josie_The_Cheerleader
Jocelyn ‘Josie’ O’Connell drove down the dark street, trying to reach the dance club.
“Damm, Conner and Xavier are gonna kill me for being late.” Her friends had planned this night a week ago so that they could all meet Conner’s new girlfriend.
Josie wouldn’t be running late if her boss had let her out on time. He had asked her to run down to the local occult shop for some lavender.
She sighed and wished she were back in high school, before she had gotten her job. Back then, she could do practically whatever she wanted. She was one of the first of her group to get a car. Sure, it was her brother’s old car, but it got her to party’s and back. She was also dating the quarterback of their football team.
Boy, was that a mistake. ‘If I knew then what I know now ... ’ She thought to herself. She was glad she had a pretty good high school life.
The only embarrassing moment she had was when she this horrible goth boy handcuffed her to her locker when she was late to class. She frowned as she remembered him. He was such a jerk. Always skipping school and pulling fire alarms, such a loser.
She flipped her long, blond hair behind her shoulder. Her mother hated her hair. She always tried to bribe Josie to stop dying her hair and to leave it its natural color, cherry-red. But as a soon-to be 21-year-old, Josie claimed she could make her own decisions.
She flipped on her blinker and turned down the alley to get to the club. She turned her music up a bit louder as she drove through the dark passage. She bobbed her head to the beat. Josie didn’t see the man till it was too late. She hit him full on at 40 MPH. Josie slammed on her breaks and turned off the ignition.
“Oh ... My ... God ... ” She flung the door open and jumped out of her car. The body was sprawled on the ground. He was wearing black pants and a baggy blue, hooded sweater.
“No wonder I didn’t see him.” Josie muttered to herself. As she reached down to check for a pulse, she noticed something red sticking out from the top of his pants. It looked like the tip of a tail.
“What the ... ” She reached down to grab it.
Suddenly, the man’s hand shot out and grabbed her arm roughly.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” He grumbled. She tried to pry his hand away, but his grip was too strong.
“What are you? I hit you with my car going 40 MPH! A human couldn’t survive that.” She accused, trying to see his face.
“Well, if that’s true, then maybe you should be a little more afraid of me, Blondie.” He smirked as he pulled down his hood. He had light brown hair that fell just above his chin and dark blue eyes.
“It take’s a lot more then you too ... Wait. I know you from somewhere.” She squinted, as she looked him over again.
Then it came to her. Well, actually, the scar on his left cheek came to her.
“Devlin? Devlin Sykes?” She asked. His eye’s widened in shock.
“How did you know that?”
“We went to high school together. I’m Josie O’Connell.” She explained. He still looked confused.
“You handcuffed me to my locker.” She sighed. He smirked.
“That’s right. You were little miss school spirit.”
“Was not.”
“You were dating that jerk Gage Redson. The quarterback. You were totally miss school spirit. And I see you haven’t changed much. Still a blond bimbo.” He laughed. Josie frowned and pulled her hand out of his grasp with all of her strength.
“Listen you gothic, mutant, tail-having freak. What did I ever do to you?” Josie glared. But Devlin just glared back.
“What did you do to me? How about you and your preppie friends terrorizing me my entire high school life for being, as you put it, ‘a freak with no brain and ugly hair.’ Does that clear things up for you?” He snapped, standing. Josie stood and stared at the ground.
“That wasn’t me. It was my friends.” She explained.
“Don’t you get it? You’re all the same. Judging people on looks and not substance. But that’s fine. What else can you expect from a bunch of D- students.” He smirked once again.
Josie just stared at him amazed. For someone who hated being judged by appearances, he sure was being a hypocrite. Just cause she was blond, which isn’t even her real hair color, he thought she was some dumb idiot. When in reality, she had the 3rd highest GPA in their class.
She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down before she hit him.
Hopefully, he would just leave her alone.
“But you know, I’m sure you didn’t get a D-.” He began. Josie glanced up at him, shocked.
“I bet you got an incomplete. I’m sure teachers don’t give very many points for spelling your name right on the paper.” He laughed. That had done it. Devlin Sykes had gone to far. She pulled back her fist so sock him.
“Oh! You gonna hit me? I hope you don’t mess up your makeup.” Josie just smiled at his assumption.
“Oh yes. I will kick your ass. And I’ll do it without smudging my eyeliner.” Then her fist connected with his face. He fell to the ground clutching his eye.
“What the hell?!” He screamed, shocked.
“And I didn’t even break a nail.” Josie smirked before returning to her car. She looked behind her and reversed, pulling out of the alley, leaving Devlin on the ground.
