Xander Goes Beyond: Part Three
by James Dalton
Part Three
Vamper Territory
“No you dolt! Are you blind or something? They said that all you have to do is drink his blood, not kill him. The only way to kill the Prophet is by staking him and once you do that there will be no way that you’ll get the blood....” Heinrich’s harsh voice tore through Xander’s brain.
< So that’s how Angel feels.....good. >
“Come on you guys, settle down...you know better than that Heinrich.....” Buffy gave Heinrich a mock punch and started to giggle when he grabbed her and ran about the library pretending to be a caveman.
< Puh-lease......Now I know what it looked like when me and Will acted like that... >
“So all I do is get his blood....if this gets easier I could do it with my eyes closed!” Xander cracked the joke inorder to boost his morale.
“Oh it won’t be easy....the Prophet dwells in the sewers, beneath the Bronze......Vamper turf...” Giles looked up from the screen, Shellć and Panther having left.
“Can’t we just go in through the cemetary? Or maybe some other part of town?” Xander looked around hopefully for an understanding face.
“Sorry, but eversince the Mistress caused the Great Quake a few months back, the rest of the sewer outlets have been closed up. The only way in is through the Vamper territory.....” Giles disconnected and stood up.
“But where to look? I mean we haven’t had any real need to enter the sewers since the Great Quake.....no one here knows the whereabouts of this sewer entrance.” Cordy had slung a crossbow over her shoulder.
“Excuse me, but I am here......” Buffy waved from the bookcase where Heinrich had put her down.
“Okay Buff, you can find out where the sewer outlet is and we can go and kick some demonic butt!” Cordy packed three stakes into her handbag.
“Alright! I’m going home!” Xander leapt into the air.
* * *
Xander was trying to forget the idea that he had entered Vamper territority three minutes ago. Ahead of him was Cordy who had her crossbow ready for action. Behind him were Heinrich and Buffy. The three Slayerettes and the guy from the other dimension....that’s who they were right here, right now....
Cordy flinched suddenly and was instantly in a position that reminded Xander of a cat ready to pounce.
“My Slayer sense just went wild!” Cordy’s eyes lit up as she scanned the surrounding area for Vampers.
Quickly responding to her movements, Xander, Heinrich and Buffy all pulled out the daggers given to them by Angel before leaving the library. Everyone waited with baited breath for the Vampers. All was still for a few seconds more before....
“Die mortals!” the Vamper leader hit Xander in the back as he descended from one of the warehouse roofs.
Xander was knocked to the ground winded, as Buffy and Heinrich attacked two other Vampers who came out of the dark. Meanwhile Cordy staked the Vamper leader through the heart. As he died his true form, that of an ancient looking demon, appeared causing Xander to squirm even more. Finally the creature turned to black dust.
“Man, that was my favourite shirt!” Xander stood up and drew his dagger ready for action.
“Don’t worry Ale...Xander, Vamper dust comes out easily in cold water.” Cordy smiled at him as she fired a crossbow bolt into the heart of another Vamper.
Heinrich and Buffy held the two they were on long enough for Cordy to stake the final Vampers. All four of the companions breathed sighs of relief after having defeated such hard foes. They took deep breaths before continuing on down an alley way. They passed by other warehouses, which most definately contained more hungry Vampers, before they arrived at a derelict version of the Bronze.
“Here we are, Ground Zero in Vamper Town. The Bronze.....” Heinrich looked over and smiled at the sight of Xander’s surprise.
“My god! What happened here? Where I come from the Bronze is the place to be at night.....” Xander stared at the mouldering edifice with disbelief.
“Twelve years ago, the Bronze was partially destroyed when a large earthquake rocked the area. From the crack in the ground beneath the dance floor emerged the Vampers. It was at this same time that the Prophet came forward....” Cordy went over to the large barred doors.
“You scared at all?” Heinrich smiled as he joined Cordy next to the door.
“Of...of course not, seems you’re the only one then.” Xander returned the smile to Heinrich, with as much venom as the first.
“Now guys, stop fighting amoung yourselves.....we’ll be fighting soon enough. Lets go!” Cordy slammed into the doors, knocking them open, and stepped inside.
Slowly Xander, Heinrich and Buffy filed into the deserted building. Xander’s eyes widened at the sight of dried blood, cobwebs, skeletons and scuttling bugs in the place he had just been dancing in the night before. The foursome finally came up to a large crack in the centre of the room. It appeared very deep and a low moan could be heard issuing from it. Cordy stopped and drew out some more stakes which she handed everyone. Then she took out the rope that they would use to enter the Prophet’s domain.
“Going somewhere Mortal?” a cold voice echoed from the stage.
“Does anyone else find this whole place rather disturbing? I mean, now even the entertainment is calling us Mortal.....how about we.....go to another joint.....” Xander smiled sheepishly as he noticed twenty shapes moving out of the shadows.
“Oh, look what the bat dragged in...” Cordy turned around and prepared to launch an attack on the Vampers.
The head Vamper smirked evilly as the other Vampers closed in on the gang. Suddenly one of them shrieked as a dust cloud appeared momentarily. More of the Vampers collapsed into dust piles as the gang moved outward from the crack in the floor. Finally, the four stood amid a carpet of dust. The head Vamper leapt from the stage and drew a wicked curved sword. He moved towards the foursome and struck out. Cordy fell back shrieking as the blade carved into her arm, leaving a crimson streak along the length of it. Heinrich rushed into the attack but was too sent flying with a gash across his chest. Finally, Xander turned towards the Vamper and drew his dagger as well as a stake.
“Time to die ugly....” Xander leapt at the Vamper and ducked as his blade swooped above his head.
The vamper hissed and drew back as Xander’s dagger cut a deep gash in his ankle, allowign black blood to dribble out. The Vamper returned the gesture with another sweep of his sword which in turn was deflected by Xander’s dagger. A move that made his wrist jar painfully with the shock. The Vamper, seeing his opponent momentarilly slowed raised the sword to plunge down into Xander’s heart, when suddenly he exploded into a pile of dust. Xander, in disbelief stood up and turned around to see Buffy smiling at him.
“Not just a computer nerd hey?” she smiled one of her sweet smiles.
