She stood at the edge of the cliff and looked down at the vast drop below. How many years ago had she last stood on this spot and dreamed of the delights the future would bring?

She laughed at her naiveness. Her rush to grow up and then her urgency to stay young.

Now she was old.

Not wrinkles old, but that point in life where everything has been done and existence is merely a routine.

She felt the breeze blow gently through her hair. Flight seemed almost possible and she wished it was. She would fly far away from the invisible shackles that bound her to her destiny.

She had never wanted to leave so much.

Especially now, when she felt that she had finally come full circle. Tingles at the back of her neck made unshed tears glisten in her eyes.

“What do you want?” she asked quietly to the stillness behind her.

“The same thing you do”

She laughed “All right, what do I want?”

A short pause. “I don’t think I know”

She prompted half -heartedly “What I want is to be left alone”

“Do you really think that’s an option anymore?”

They were speaking in the rhyme of the past and in the light of the present, the year old questions took on new meanings. She considered the truth hidden beneath the words.

“You’re right. Who are you?”

“Let’s just say I’m a friend”

She chuckled as a sudden weight was lifted from her shoulders

“I’ve always wanted a friend”

She stepped away from the edge and linked her arm through his.

He smiled down on her

“That’s not what you said the first time”

She let out a silent breath. Maybe things would work themselves out. One couldn’t dwell on the past forever.

“I think it’s time we rewrite the old script” she said.

And they walked on.
