Shadow

//Your body’s warm but you are not.//
Buffy stalks Angel in the Bronze, arguing with him.

//You give a little, not a lot.//
[“I’m just an animal, right?” Angel asks. Buffy glances around confidently with her crossbow. “No, animals I like.”]

//It could be love until we kiss.//
Buffy and Angel sit on the bed together. Both soaking wet, Angel looks at Buffy’s back.

//You’re all I want, but not like this.//
[“I don’t think we should.” Angel says. “Shut up and kiss me.” Buffy answers kissing him.]

//I’m watching you disappear, but you…//
In the bed, light passes over Buffy. Blond hair is fanned out making a halo around her head. Angel yells her name, outside in the rain.

//You were never here.//
[“Angel, I love you.” Buffy says as tears stream down her face. Angel, pulling his coat on answers, “Love you too, I’ll call.” walks out of the house leaving Buffy alone, crying.]

//It’s only your shadow, never yourself,//
In the school hallway, Angel holds Willow by the throat, facing Buffy.

//It’s only your shadow, nobody else//
[“Face it, school girl, your boyfriend is dead. And you’re all gonna join him.” Angel says.]

//It’s only a shadow, filling the room,//
Angel sits on the edge of Buffy’s bed stroking her hair as she sleeps.

//Arriving too late…//
[“He was in my room.” Buffy said as she walked into the library. “Who?” Giles asked as he looks up from a book. “Angel. He was in my room last night.” she answered. “Are you sure?” Giles asks. “Positive. When I woke up, I found a picture he'd left me on my pillow.”]

//And leaving too soon. And leaving too soon. //
[Angelus: Passion. It lies in all of us. Sleeping...waiting... And though unwanted...unbidden... it will stir...open its jaws, and howl. It speaks to us... guides us... Passion rules us all. And we
obey. What other choice do we have?”]

//Your body gives, but then holds back//
[As Jenny holds the Orb of Thesulah, the shopkeeper asks, “By the way… not that it’s any of my business really, but, uh, what are you planning on conjuring up? If you can decipher the text?” She smiles and lifts the orb in front of her face. “A present for a friend of mine.” she answers. The shopkeeper nods and asks, “Really? What are you going to give him?” She looks into the Orb and it begins to glow. “His soul.”]

//The sun is bright the sky is black,//
[Angel tries to enter the house but is held back by an invisible barrier. Willow and Buffy walk down the steps as Willow recites the spell, “ ‘Hicce veribs consensus rescissus est.’ ” Buffy walks up to him. “Sorry Angel. Changed the locks.” He growls and she slams the door in his face.]

//Can only be another sign//
Buffy and Giles stand over a grave, Giles places the flowers on the grave of Ms. Jenny Calendar.

//I can not keep what isn't mine//
[“I’m sorry. I’m sorry I couldn’t kill him for you...” Buffy says and looks down at the grave. “For her... while I had the chance. I wasn’t ready.” Then in the computer lab Willow is filling in for Ms. Calendar. Buffy voiceover, “But I think I finally am.”]

//Your laughter, it lingers on //
[Angelus: If we could live without passion, maybe we'd know
some kind of peace. But we would be hollow. Empty rooms, shuttered and dank... Without passion, we'd be truly dead.”]

//But you, you were almost gone//
Angel walks around Buffy talking. He finally swings the sword at her and she catches it between her hands.

//It’s only your shadow, never yourself//
[Angel plays idly with his sword and points it at Buffy’s head. “Now that’s everything, huh? No weapons… No friends…No hope.” he says mockingly to the frightened slayer. Buffy closes her eyes and braces herself for whatever’s coming. “Take all that away… and what’s left?” he asks. He draws the sword back and thrusts it directly at her face. With lighting-fast reflexes she swings up with both arms and catches the blade between the palms of her hands. She opens her eyes and meets his. “Me.”]

//It’s only a shadow, nobody else//
Buffy brings back her sword ready to kill the demon. Suddenly he’s Angel again. They kiss, and she stabs him.

//It’s only a shadow, filling the room,//
[“Buffy?” Angel whispers, sobbing. His soul is returned. “What’s going on?” She looks at him, confused, but doesn’t lower her sword…not yet. He looks around and slowly rises to his feet. “Where are we? I-I don’t remember.” he says. Buffy realizes that Willow’s cure has worked and lowers her sword. “Angel?” Buffy says softly. Angel sees her wound. “You’re hurt.” he states. She looks down at her wound and feels Angel touch her arm. She ignores her cut and looks up at him. She steps closer and he embraces her tightly. “Oh Buffy… God.” he says.]

//Arriving too late…//
[Buffy still isn’t positive that he’s telling the truth, but accepts the hug. “I… I feel like I haven’t seen you in months.” he says. She finally believes him. She closes her eyes and breathes out a deep sigh. “Oh my god, everything is so muddled. I…” he says and holds her even more closely. He kisses her on the shoulder. She sobs into his shoulder and hugs him back. “Oh, Buffy…” he says.]

//And leaving too soon. And leaving too soon.//
[Behind him Acathla gives a low rumble. Buffy opens her eyes and stares in shock as Acathla’s face contorts. Out of his mouth is a swirling vortex to Hell. Buffy pulls away from Angel and looks him in the face. “What’s happening?” Angel asked confused. “Shh… don’t worry about it.” Buffy said soothingly. She kisses him, and he kisses her back. Behind them the vortex has grown to be about 5 feet all around and getting bigger. Buffy breaks off the kiss and looks into Angel’s eyes. “I love you.” Buffy whispers. “I love you.” Angel whispers back.]

//How can I tell if you mean what you say?//
[“Close your eyes.” Buffy says. She nods reassuringly and he closes his eyes. She tries hard not to start crying and kisses him again, gently. She steps back, draws back her sword and thrusts it into his chest. His eyes immediately open in surprise and pain. She steps away from him and he looks down at the sword going the whole way through his body. She can only look at the sword thrust through his body as she slowly steps back. “Buffy…” Angel says as he holds his hand out to her. The vortex sucks him into hell and closes.]

//You say it so loud but you sound far away.//
Angel and Buffy dance in the Bronze while the others look on.

//Maybe I had just a glimpse of your soul//
[“I miss you” Buffy says as they sway back and forth with the music. As she grips Angel’s hand the claddaugh ring falls off her finger. They both look down at it as it clangs against the ground. Angel bends to pick it up, Buffy remembers killing him. “I had to.” She says.]

//Or was it your shadow I saw on the wall?//
[He squeezes it until his hand bleeds. The wound in his chest leaks blood. “I loved you.” he says. “Oh, Angel.” Buffy says mournfully and tries to put a hand on his wound. “Go to Hell!” he screams. She pulls her hand away. His body decays in front of her and he whispers, “I did.”]

//I’m watching you disappear, but you…//
Willow and Buffy sit at the library table and Giles walks around them.

//You were never here.//
[“Angel was cured.” Buffy said. Giles looked at her, shocked. “When I killed him, Angel was cured. Your spell worked, Will. I was about to take him out and, uh, and he was Angel again. He didn’t remember anything that he’d done, he just held me. It was too late and I had to. So I told him that I loved him, and I killed him.” She looks down, blinking away tears.]

//It’s only a shadow, never yourself,//
[“I’m not sure if it helps with your spell or not, Giles.” she said. “Yes, I believe it will.” he answered looking away.]

//It’s only a shadow, nobody else//
[“We’re sorry,” Willow says. “It’s ok. I’ve just been holding onto that for so long. It felt good to get it out.” she says and smiles a half-hearted smile. She walks away and Giles picks up his books.]

//It’s only a shadow, filling the room,//
[As he heads to the back, Willow asks, “I know you don’t like me playing with mystical forces but I could really help with this spell.” “There is no spell.” Giles answers and walks to his office.]

//Arriving too late…//
In the mansion, Buffy kneels down and places the claddaugh ring on the ground.

//And leaving too soon. And leaving too soon.//
[“Goodbye” she whispers]
