Forever: Part 1

by frenchtoast101

Buffy looked forlornely at the scene playing in front of her. It didn't seem real. It felt too horrible. Her head was spinning and she was becoming dizzy. She wished that she could make it all stop. Save Angel. Save herself from this torture. Having to fight him made it feel like the ground was being pulled out from under her feet, her breath getting knocked out of her.

This didn't seem so bad, though. Not as bad as she knew it would feel afterwords. After everything was over. This moment was a blessing in disguise. She knew she had to do it, which only made it easier somehow. It was coming. The moment of truth. The moment she was going to have to be strong enough.

Why is life so hard? Who knows? It just is. Times like these make you feel so small. Make you want to run and hide. But you don't. You know you want to, but for some unknown reason, you don't. You always end up sticking it out, and later, wishing you hadn't.

The two swords clanged together, each time, shaking her heart and cracking it in two. It wasn't supposed to be like this. But she knew it would've happened eventually. They both knew it would. Well, Angel did anyway. Not this demon who engulfed his body and took over. She knew she was in denial, but it kept her going strong, and she was getting stronger with each hard blow. The portal was slowly opening, revealing a hellish-looking orange light, swirling behind him. She was going to do it. She was bracing herself. Until...

He dropped his sword, letting it fall to the ground. He too, fell to the ground, clutching his stomach. She saw a change go through him at that moment. She felt it too. It was an amazing sensation that filled her with hope and the feeling of an old love. His eyes glowed brightly, then dulled down to their normal state.

The next few moments came as a blur to her. All colliding in her brain, creating a major traffic jam. She knew it was him, though. She knew without a doubt. Their brief conversation was fuzzy in her mind, but she knew she had responded to him. Her Angel. A knot continued to tighten in her stomach, making it harder and harder to breath. The portal continued to grow behind him, like a huge gaping hole, ready to swallow her everything.

All she could remember was telling him to close his eyes, then kissing him. He obeyed with absolutely no hesitation, for he trusted her with his life. The moment came, and she seized it, plunging the sword into his chest, for the safety of the world.

His eyes shot open in a questioning plea, which was the last look he ever gave her, before being sucked into the swirling vortex. He did say her name, which was the final straw in breaking her heart. She could feel her eyes beginning to swell with tears as the vortex closed, trapping him in hell. She tried to hold them back but they came. They came so hard that she didn't think they'd ever stop. They never did. No matter what, her broken heart would always be crying for him. Forever.
