Maudlin Poetry: My Baby

by LeatherLovin

The hallways were dark and abandoned as Buffy’s boots tapped rhythmically against the tiled floor. She was dressed to kill-literally-and any casual observer would think that she was as normal as can be, but anyone who knew her would know that she was on a mission. Buffy rounded a corner just to come face-to-face with a familiar door. She stopped, took a deep breath – this was her routine when she came to the hospital – and pushed past the door. The figure lying in the bed that she once – and still - considered a sister looked so weak and venerable, but Buffy knew otherwise. Buffy sat next to the bed, picked up her sister slayers hand, kissed it, and said, “Hey, Faith,” her voice was raspy and barley above a whisper, because emotion threatened to strangle her. Still holding Faith’s hand, Buffy stroked her hair lovingly. “I’m sorry that I’m late. I had a hard time making excuses to get away from the gang.” Buffy smiled fondly. “It’s almost two months. Seven more months and you’ll be Auntie Faith. I still haven’t summoned up enough courage to call Angel and tell him he’s going to be a daddy. Don’t think I ever will. Yea, I know you think I should, but I can’t tell Mom, Giles, Xander, or Willow, either. I’m glad you’re keeping my secret. It still amazes me to be caring another human life inside of me, although, I don’t really look pregnant.” Buffy’s eyes smarted with tears. “I’m sorry, Faith, please wake up, soon.” She sobered just as quickly. Buffy glanced at her watch, visiting hours were almost over. “Well,” She said standing up. “I should be going.” Buffy bent, “I love you,” and kissed Faith on the fore head.

Buffy was curled upon the couch. She and Joyce were watching an old movie. The credits started rolling. “So.” Joyce said, “Have you and Riley gone out lately?”

“No, Mom,” Buffy was annoyed at her mother for trying to set her up with T.A. at U.C. Sunnydale.

“Buffy, he’s a nice, normal boy. You could at least give him a benefit of a doubt, and put in a little effort your self.”

“I notice how you put emphasis on ‘normal’.” Buffy smiled wryly, knowing her mother was thinking of her ex-boyfriend, the vampire.

“Sweetie, you can’t blame me for wanting you to have a normal life, can you?”

((There it is again)) Buffy thought. ((Normal life, right, never gonna happen)). “No, but, Mom, I’m the slayer, normal isn’t inmy vocabulary.”

“Well, Normal as possible.”

Buffy faced Joyce, “We need to talk.”

Joyce sat there staring, wide-eyed and unblinking at what her teenage daughter just reveled. “P-p-pregnant. What? How? When…”

“Pregnant, you should know that, and graduation.” Buffy answered not knowing what else to say.

Joyce, Finally pulling herself together, stood and said, “Graduation, that’s…” Joyce looked toward Buffy’s abdomen. “You don’t look two months pregnant.”

“I know, I haven’t gained much weight.”

“Buffy, that’s just not healthy. Who all knows?”

“You. Me. Faith.”

“Faith? I thought she was still-“

“She is.”

“Joyce turned away from her daughter, “Whose the father?”

Buffy hesitated, knowing her mother would blow a gasket. She lowered her eyes. “Angel.”

Joyce turned, chin held high and authoritive, “You’re to have an abortion.”

Buffy, enraged, demanded, “Who the Hell are to determine the fate of child?”

“I will not stand to have an evil bastered under my roof or in my family.”

“Well, you have no problems there.” Buffy marched toward the stairs.

“Where are you going?”

“To get my things, I’m leaving.”

“You can’t do that.”

Buffy turned to Joyce, “Why not?”

“Because I’m your mother, damnit!”

Buffy scoffed and rolled her eyes.

“Am I interrupting something?” a voice said from the doorway.

Both women turned and yelled, “Yes!”

Riley flinched.

Buffy ran up the stairs, “What are you doing?”

“Packing!”

“Like hell you are!”

“Mrs. Summers?” Riley asked awkwardly.

“Yes, Riley?” Joyce asked, the energy draining from her.

“What’s going on?”

“Oh, just a mother and daughter quarrel.”

“Anything I can do?”

“Talk Buffy into staying?”

“Why is she leaving?”

“She’s pregnant.”

“Pregnant? Buffy?”

“Yes…My baby’s having a baby.”
