Love Is Forever . . . Isn't It?: Part One

Buffy and Angel belong to Joss Whedon, all other characters (and there are many) belong to me, along with the plot. If you wish to borrow any of them, please ask and all feedback is welcome. I suggest you read "Gone 2: Rome" since this is a sequel to it.

Part One

The young girl glanced apprehensively over her shoulder. Had that shadow moved, or was it just the flickering street light? Was that muffled noise a mouse, or something more sinister? She quickened her pace, her dark eyes darting left and right, trying to keep the panic building up in her gut from taking over. Nancy Young had walked down this road many times on her way back from her job at the cinema. Her hours often forced her to work until it was long after dark, but nothing had ever happened. There was nothing to be afraid of; this was a good neighborhood, not far from her small apartment.

There was a noise behind her and this time she wheeled, bright eyes trying to penetrate the darkness. "Alright, come on out, whoever you are!" She called out, trying to be brave or at least sound like she was. A slight breeze rustled some branches. "Barney, is that you?" Nancy asked, thinking of her neighbor's cat. He often wandered away from home. "Come here kitty, I'll take you home to Mrs. Weigher." She leaned forward, clucking her tongue. "Here kitty, kitty, kitty."

Her only warning was a slight brush of air behind her and suddenly someone growled into her ear, "Meow."

Nancy whipped around and gasped with horror. A tall, burly man stood two feet away from her, but there was nothing human about him. His forehead was misshapen or something, and his eyes were an acidy yellow. He growled low in his throat like a wild animal, and the young woman realized that his teeth were. . . Fangs? She opened her mouth to scream, but he tackled her to the ground in the blink of an eye. She hit the ground hard, the breath knocked out of her and she panicked for a few seconds, unable to breathe, though she knew that wouldn't matter in a moment. The monster leaned over her, mouth open wide, and Nancy shut her eyes, preparing for the pain, in whatever form it may come. It didn't come at all.

Suddenly the thing was ripped off her and she heard it connect solidly with the concrete a couple of meters away. Nancy opened her eyes and stared up at her unexpected savior. A petite blond teenage girl stood protectively over her, hands raised in a battle position. She glanced down, her face forbidding, and said, "Get gone."

Nancy did. She never walked home that way again.

Buffy glanced back up as soon as the young woman had taken off. The vamp was back on his feet and he was none too pleased that she had cost him a nice dinner. Just add it to her tab.

The demon hissed at her, clenching his fists in fury, "Fool! You'll pay for that!"

Buffy smirked annoyingly at him, "Geez, that was original much. Don't you guys have any imagination at all? I mean, I manage to come up with cool one-liners all the time, the least you could do is put a little effort into it!"

His eyes blackened and he roared his anger and threw himself at her, planning to knock her to the ground as he had his would have been supper. Idiot. She braced herself with her legs, and as soon as he was near enough, reached out and grabbed his shirt, heaving him off his feet with all her might and sending the surprised blood sucker somersaulting through the air. He scrambled to his feet, but didn't attack her again, instead stood still, watching her warily.

"What are you?" he asked. "The Slayer?"

"No," a voice sneered from behind him. "I am." The vamp turned just in time to impale himself on an extended stake. He froze for a second, then exploded into dust, revealing a young, blue eyed girl with short black hair.

Buffy smiled slightly, "Nice." Then she frowned, thinking over the events earlier that evening, "That makes it what, three in one night? And it's not even past one o'clock."

The Chosen One nodded equally perturbed. "That's bad, that's very bad. Maybe even really bad. Could even be terrible. Bennie's gonna freak."

Buffy grinned at the thought of the steady young Watcher. She chuckled out loud, "The day that Bennie freaks is the day that vampires take over the world."

Abbey McKimmley, the Vampire Slayer, blanched and frowned at her best friend, "Don't say that. Don't even joke about it. You're gonna jinx us, I swear."

Buffy grinned sheepishly, turning to walk down the street, "Sorry."

Abbey turned to follow her, but raised her hand dramatically as if to ward off her apology. "No, no! You don't say something like that and expect to get out of that with a simple 'I'm sorry!' It just doesn't work that way! I can't believe you. . ."

She continued with her friendly tirade, not giving Buffy a chance to respond. She couldn't have if she wanted to. She was laughing too hard.
