Part Fourteen

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Xander and Angel crept closer to the bonfire. They met up with Whistler behind his rock.

"It's getting down to it boys," Whistler said softly. "Split up."

Angel went off to the left while Xander crept away to the right. There were more rocks to hide behind. Meanwhile, Daemon continued to chant.

Another flash of light illuminated the night. As Angel's eyes readjusted again to the darkness, he saw a dark cloud of mist rising from the cauldron. The mist swirled around until it touched one of the men in the dark robes. It encircled him and then suddenly the man began to scream. As Angel watched, the man shriveled until he was a lifeless wrinkled husk.

"That's not good," Angel muttered.

The other men looked around anxiously, but Daemon stood his ground. The mist was now forming a shape. Angel could see two glowing eyes and arms reaching out from the mist.

the mist spoke in a gravely voice. It was the same language Daemon had been using. < I feel it. I am free of the Limbo. This land shall become my hell, and I will reign. You have been a faithful servant. I will give to you what I promised. >

The mist touched two more of the black robed men. They suffered the same fate as the first one. More men started to run away.

"Now!" Daemon shouted.

Angel rushed forward and could see Xander doing the same. They each had a small bundle of herbs that Willow had given them. At the same moment they dropped their bundles into the cauldron. As they were doing this, Whistler had approached the fire and was pouring his own bunch of herbs into it.

The mist of Dramoco seemed to scream.

shouted Dramoco.

Dramoco's mist started to swirl around Daemon, but Daemon did not begin to shrivel. He just continued to laugh. Angel looked around. A wind had begun to toss sand around them. Suddenly Lissa dropped to her knees. Angel rushed forward and knelt by her.

"Lissa?" He said.

"What's going on?" She looked up at the scene and then started to struggle to her feet. "Oh my god! We have to stop him!"

"Why? We're defeating Dramoco."

"No. No we're not. He's trying to draw Dramoco's power directly into himself. He's going to become a demon made flesh!"

Angel looked at Daemon. The mist of Dramoco was still swirling around him. As the wind howled, Daemon began to levitate.

"How do we stop it?" Angel asked still watching Daemon.

"I don't know if we can. Who's doing the spell?"

"Willow and Nathaniel. In the caves down at the end of the beach."

"Try to distract him or something. I'll go see if it's too late."

Lissa made it to her feet and ran off in the direction Angel had pointed. He got to his own feet and thought for a moment. He wasn't sure what exactly was going on, but he knew he had to stop it. Finally he decided.

Sporting his game face, Angel ran directly towards the gleeful Daemon. As soon as he reached Daemon, he leapt up into the air and grabbed the man around the waist. Daemon cried out as they both fell to the sand. Now the mist encircled both Angel and Daemon.

"You fool!" Daemon shouted. "You'll interfere with the spell."

"That's the plan." Angel grunted.

The two wrestled on the ground as the mist of Dramoco hid them from view. Angel could barely here Xander shout.

"I can't see what's happening. Who's winning?"

"No!" Daemon cried. "The spell is almost finished. I can feel it! You're going to...!"

But Daemon couldn't finish. The mist of Dramoco suddenly split into two halves with part of it pouring through Daemon's mouth, and the other part pouring itself into Angel's mouth, much to his surprise.

Angel felt like he was choking. He had to remind himself that he didn't need to breath. It felt like a power was entering him, in fact, it was not unlike the feeling he had when he had been brought across by Darla, only this time he felt as if he had more power over it. Finally the feeling was over, leaving him feeling a bit disoriented and still wondering exactly what had happened.

Daemon was the first to recover. He scrambled to his feet and began to back away.

"I can feel his power within me," he said. "But not all of it. You have stolen some of his power from me and I will have it!"

Lissa was running back with Nathaniel and Willow close behind her.

"But not now," Daemon finished. "Now I must recover. You will be sorry you stood between me and my power."

Then, in a burst of foul smelling smoke, Daemon disappeared.
