Hold Back Your Tears: Part 4

by Twig

"Rashku Buffy ignuta mako ru." Xander began. "Minush id tako Drusilla min. Shui qui huratu ru min Spike ta." Everyone waited. Ms. Calendar had a sudden bad feeling.

"I think you've pronounced it wrong."

"Huh?"

"It's suppose to be, "Oh great powers of the Earth, grant me the power to make Spike forget Buffy as the slayer of his beloved, Drusilla.'"

"That's what I said."

"No."

"What did I say? I mean, I can do this again right?"

"Um, no actually. This is a one time thing."

"What did I say?"

"You say, 'Oh great powers of the Earth, grant me the power to make Spike see Buffy as his beloved, Drusilla'. It's suppose to be rushku, not rashku. And you forgot mortada mi."

"Oh dear." Giles said as he realized what was going to happen.

Spike regained consciousness. He morphed back into his human form. Drusilla never liked his vampire form. Then it hit him that she was gone. The Slayer murdered her. He opened his eyes... and saw Drusilla.

Buffy had never seen Spike in his human form before, well, not in good lighting anyway. She had to admit, he was pretty good looking. She pushed away these thoughts as Spike stood up, looking fairly stunned.

"Drusilla?" Spike whispered. Ms. Calendar's interpretation was right. Xander had mispronounced, Spike saw Buffy as Drusilla. "Is that really you?"

Buffy ran through all the things she could possibly say and came up with nothing. Spike walked to Buffy and he reached for her. He was just about to touch her cheek when he suddenly flinch back, almost unsure if she was real or not. Spike let his hand drop and he looked deep into Drusilla's eyes. He saw confusion, unsureness, and something that really knocked him: fear. This couldn't be Dru.

"Dru? Is it really you?" Spike waited patiently for an answer. One word, one word from Buffy would determine everything. Yes, or no. Buffy had been avoiding Spike's penetrating glare but she found herself reciprocating it. She saw what she had been broadcasting: confusion, uncertainty.

A sudden flash of Spike's face entered her vision, the one where Drusilla had died only moments before. The one where a part of Spike died. Buffy could see none of that now. She couldn't let him down, even if he was a vampire. She couldn't bear to see that look in his eyes again. That pain. Buffy wouldn't let it happen.

"Yes Spike. It's me."
