*****Prologue*****
SUNNYDALE – APRIL 1999
By the cemetery someone was standing alone in the cool night air. She was a tall girl with soft blonde hair down to her hips and shining emerald green eyes. She surveyed her surroundings intently, sniffing the air and narrowing her eyes at the shadows. Turning to her left she called out in an vaguely English accent.
‘It’s all clear, there’s no-one around.’
From behind a particularly large tombstone two more figures emerged. Another girl with long, brown curly hair and bright blue eyes; followed by a tall, broad shouldered man with short, brown, spiked hair and dark brown eyes. The man spoke, also in an English accent.
‘Es, this is ridiculous. If we don’t eat soon we’ll starve.’
‘Eli’s right lets find a hospital or a blood bank…something, anything…I’m starving, and you’re weak.’
The brunette approached the blonde and placed an arm tentatively round her shoulders, she spoke again.
‘We’re family; we’ve got to look out for each other.’
Across the cemetery Buffy, who was on patrol, watched with interest. She thought to herself.
‘Well we’ll go and look for food while you stay here. Okay?’ The man said, and the blonde woman nodded. ‘Eve, you coming?’ The brunette ran to his side.
‘Let’s go.’ She said. The two of them walked off together, out of the graveyard gate and down the street. The blonde woman sat down on a gravestone to wait.
‘Perfect.’ Buffy muttered to herself, and seizing her chance she walked quietly across the cemetery. The blonde woman seemed to hear her approaching, as Buffy got closer the woman turned to face her, sporting her game face.
Buffy took a step closer and the woman got to her feet, growling defensively. Buffy reached behind her and pulled a stake from her bag. As the stake came into view, the blonde woman snarled. Buffy moved towards her. Before she knew what was happening she had been thrown to the ground by a vicious kick.
She leapt to her feet immediately, wielding the stake as though it was a sword. The vampire seemed calm in the face of death. Buffy punched her twice in the jaw; the vampire barely leaned backwards, she just seemed to absorb the force of the blows; then she straightened up again and gave a slightly bemused smaile. Buffy was confused herself, why wasn’t this vamp running…and why was she just taking it without even showing signs of pain. Panicking she aimed a kick at the vampires stomach. She was surprised when the vampire caught her foot in mid-air and used it to push her to the floor. She stood again, angry and a little afraid. There was something odd about this one.
‘That’s it. No more Miss Nice-Slayer.’
She leapt forward hoping to push the vampire to the floor; instead she was thrown over the vampires shoulder and landed with a thud, knocking her head on a gravestone. The vampire seemed to feel a sudden pain in her stomach and doubled over, groaning. Carefully she stood up and stumbled out of the cemetery, leaving Buffy unconscious, but still alive. Down the street a car with blackened windows screeched to a halt near the blonde woman, she jumped into the backseat of the car and slammed the door. They took to the road again.
**********
‘What happened? Are you all right?’ The man asked as he drove.
‘I had a confrontation with someone…a slayer I think.’ The blonde woman was still wincing with pain.
‘Don’t worry, we’ll be out of here tomorrow night once we get the amulet, we won’t meet her again.’ The brunette said soothingly as she stroked the blonde’s hair gently.
‘We will, we have to. I could smell Angelus on her…we have to find him.’
