Part Four
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A week later I was at the bar of the Bronze. I was fully aware that I was moping, but darn it, it just isn't fair. Xander and Miss Chase, I mean Cordelia, are now officially an item, and I didn't get anything for my trouble but a few lousy bucks. Isn't the hero the one who's supposed to get the guy?
"Trouble Summers?" Giles asked. "You don't usually look so serious."
"It's just that everyone is hooked up but me. Willow has Oz and Xander has Cordelia. I've got no one."
"Oh no, it's the end of the world. Horrors."
"You just don't understand the importance of it all. Even though I'm a Slayer and a Private Eye, I do have to keep up the pretense of a normal teen-age life. Even if it's just for my mom. Anyway, a happy Slayer is a lethal Slayer."
"What about that young man who hired you?"
"Newsflash Giles, he was a vampire."
"Oh. I see. So if he were to show up at the Bronze right now, you'd tell him to get lost?"
"You crazy? Of course not. He was a total hottie. We'd work it out."
"Ah. Then as your Watcher, I advise you to turn around."
With a sigh I indulged him. Imagine my surprise to see Angel standing there.
"Hi." he said.
I could feel my heart leap into my throat. In fact, I had a bit of trouble forcing it back to where it belonged. But I managed to say coolly.
"Hi."
"Can we talk?"
"Sure."
Feeling like monosyllabic girl, I led Angel over to a private booth. We both sat down, and I waited for him to start.
"I know that what I am makes this hard. I've um..been watching you for long time. Since before I hired you."
"I don't know whether to be flattered or creeped out."
"Flattered."
"Okay."
"Anyway. I want this to work out."
"This?"
"You and me."
"We just met a few days ago. Sure you've been watching me, but what do I really know about you?"
"Nothing. But I'd like you to learn."
Was I crazy? The man of my dreams actually wanted to be with me, and I was trying to be logical. I must be hanging with Giles too much.
"I'd love to learn." I said. There that was much better.
He smiled at me and I melted right there and then. Angel took my hand and pulled me closer. This was it. We kissed. My god, I was on fire. It's official, I'm in love. With a vampire maybe, but apparently love doesn't pay attention to so-called Destiny. Okay, so I did get the guy. Yup, this was the way it was supposed to work. Sure, I slay vampires for a living, but this one had a soul. I could get over his eating habits. Defiantly get over it. I guess life is supposed to be complicated for me. After all, I'm Buffy Summers Private Eye.
