Epilogue: A Year Later
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buffy stood with her arms crossed. Angel had done all he could to placate her, but she wasn' t having any of it.
"Buffy," he said. "I can't stay here. It's put so much strain on your relationship with...well with everyone. Especially Giles. I can't...the look in his eyes. He'll never really forgive me. I'm not running away."
"Funny, from this angle it sure looks like running away."
"A lot happened to us. We're not the same. Buffy, I' m not the same. I can pretend, but..."
He trailed off. No amount of words was going to be enough.
"I won't be that far away. You know I'd come if anything happened to you."
"Yeah. My own guardian angel. Alright, fine, you're going, then go."
Angel stepped to her and hugged her tight. She finally relaxed in his arms and kissed him. He didn't want to let go, but he had to. He pulled away and kissed her forehead.
"I love you Buffy, no distance will ever change that."
"I love you too. Watch your back."
Angel picked up a small duffel bag and headed out of the room. He was leaving early enough that he figured getting to L.A. before sunrise wouldn't be a problem. Buffy watched him go then turned to Whistler.
"You watch over him, you hear me?" Buffy said.
"Yeah, I hear ya. Don't worry, he's just got some stuff to work out. That time in the Demon Realm didn't help him none. There's always gonna be something broken deep inside of him."
"Yeah."
Buffy stepped in close to Whistler. She grabbed him by the collar of his coat and pulled his face up to hers.
"Just get this straight you fashion reject from hell," she said, "I hear you fail him in any way and I will use your head as a chia pet. You got that?"
"Yeah, yeah. I-I got that. You mind puttin' me down?"
Buffy looked down. Whistler‘s feet dangled in the air.
"Right," she said. "Just wanted things to be clear."
She set him down. Whistler straightened his shirt and coat. He laughed gently, shook his head and followed Angel out.
"God," he said. "I'm getting to old to be following a tortured vampire around. Well, this ought to be fun."
