Part One: A Visit
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Angel had no idea how long he had been there. Days, weeks, months, maybe even years, spent in a small dark room without any doors or windows, chained to the wall. He reflexively tested the chains, but they didn't even give. He had wondered at first what kind of chains could keep from breaking against a vampire's strength, but it didn't matter now. Nothing much mattered. The only thing that helped him know he was not asleep and dreaming was the pain of the memories. He shuddered.
A noise shook him out of his memories. He hadn't heard a real noise in ages, just the sound of his own breathing. Angel looked up and saw an open door. That bothered him. There hadn't been a door there a second ago. Someone stood in the doorway, framed by the harsh light. Angel winced.
"Isn't this a sight?" A familiar voice said.
"Buffy?" Angel asked. He couldn't believe his ears.
The door shut and there stood Buffy looking just as she had that fateful night. But there was an angry determined look on her face that chilled Angel throughout.
"Buffy," Angel said, hardly daring to hope that she was here to save him. "How-how did you get here?"
"I'm the slayer, I have my ways. Looks like you're a fallen angel. Right where you belong."
Angel hung his head. He didn't argue, he agreed.
"I hope you've had plenty of time to make your peace Angel. Cause I'm here to end it."
Angel looked up in surprise.
"End it? Buffy--Buffy I--I wasn't myself--the demon did those things--and--and--I feel so bad--of course I do--Buffy--please--"
"Oh stuff it Angel. I'm tired of the whole pity-me-cause-I'm-a-vampire-with-a-soul. It doesn't matter. You vampire, me slayer. In that I slay vampires, it's my job. I made a mistake letting you live. And look what you did, you killed Jenny Calendar. Not to mention tortured me and my friends. Giles was right, you do deserve to die. I don't know why I ever thought I loved you. You monster."
Angel just stared at her in silence. Part of him was agreeing with her, the other part was screaming at him that something was wrong. He had known her better than he knew himself and he knew how much he had loved her. He would have done anything for her, and he had always believed she would do the same.
"Oh Angel, let it go." A voice rang in his head.
"No," Angel moaned. "Not you."
The voice, which had been his only companion, was now making an appearance again. It echoed in his mind.
"Yes Angel," The voice continued. "Me. Just kill her Angel, and all your problems will be over. She wants you dead for things you had no control over."
"I'm chained."
"Are you?"
Angel looked down at his arms. The chains were gone, completely vanished. He blinked in confusion. Then it hit him.
"It's a hallucination," he said with a hint of laughter in his voice. "It's just my own guilty mind playing tricks. And you--you thought you could use it--no--I'm not going to believe you."
"Angel, open your eyes. She's real. You know she is."
Angel looked at Buffy again. She did look real, with anger in her eyes and a stake in her clenched fist. And not only did she look real, but he could also smell her. Angel could smell the blood in her veins with an intense hunger and need in him. Every sense told him she was really there.
"Buffy--"he whispered.
"I hope you're ready to fight vampire." Buffy said. "Cause I've been lookin' forward to getting Medieval on your butt."
Angel looked up at her helplessly.
"No." he said.
"What d'ya mean "no"? It's not that hard Angel. Fight me or die."
"I--I won't fight you Buffy--I--I can't--kill me--it's better this way--I deserve to die--"
"Have it your way. See you in Hell, oh wait, you're already there."
Angel closed his eyes and waited for the pain of the stake then blissful nothingness, but nothing happened. He waited until he couldn't stand it anymore. Finally, Angel opened his eyes. Buffy was gone. There was no indication of her ever being there. He tried to stand up, but the chains held him down. Angel looked at them. The chains were still just as solid as ever.
"Damn you!" Angel shouted. "It was a hallucination."
"That's it Angel." The voice said. "Get angry. Use your anger. Anger is so powerful. It can do so much. But then, you've seen it; you've lived it. Live it again Angel. Give in to it."
"No--no--I can't--damn you--no not again--." Angel curled up in a little ball and started sobbing.
"Tsk tsk, my poor fallen Angel. You'll see, you'll be mine again."
