Part One

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffy's life was a series of days filled with work, and nights filled with battles. Only in rare moments does she get sleep.

Ever since she decided to part with her mother, she had had to support herself, which meant getting a job and keeping it. She had thought it was best for both of them, for both to live apart. Buffy knew that without her, her mother would get a better chance of remarrying, and be able to continue the life she was destined to live before Buffy was born.

She was glad that she had chosen to adhere to the responsibilities of adulthood, earlier. Who would hate constant work, both day and night?

How bad can life get? Buffy thought. She made a game out of bouncing a quarter-machine ball off the wall, catching it and lunging it off again.

She knew that life as the slayer required no social life. More like banned a social life. She thought.

Just two weeks ago, she had been accepted in the socity of waitresses. She was blonde and cute, which gave her certain advantages.

About two days after she had started working here, she was asked out by a guy whom all her fellow waitresses admired. She, too, had feelings more than mutual about him. But, she was also obligated to support herself and slay, at the same time. She said 'no' to him.

The other waitresses were all disappointed, some were bewildered, but most were "understanding."

Six more guys asked her out that first week. She declined them all. The waitresses said they understood.

Last week, ten others asked her out. She said 'no' to them all. By then, the waitresses were beginning to have doubts about Buffy Summers, that new girl.

After saying 'no' to two other guys, the consortium of waitresses were assured that there was, indeed, something wrong with Buffy. They started excluding her in their gatherings. Eventually, she became a total outsider. And, eventually she becamse someone whom the waitresses avoided and feared.

Buffy sighed, contempt with her demoralizing social status. Maybe in another lifetime... Her eyes stared off into space, fantasizing about "the perfect life."

Suddenly, a crash sounded. She immediately tensed, her senses ready for violence and danger. She reached into her pocket and grabbed the miniturized stake.

She peered left, deep into the corrider that led back to the guest area of the restaurant. No one, nothing.

She peered right, towards a staff-only restroom and a fire door. No one, nothing.

One obvious thought entered her mind: False alarm. She was about to replace the stake, when she heard a suprised scream from behind.

She spun around and dashed towards that voice, her stake ready at hand.

Another scream came before the inevitable thump of a body, helplessly drawn to the ground by gravity, sounded.

Buffy bit her lips and ran faster. She kicked open the adjoining door, and stared at the most terrifying, yet hope-bringing, sight that she had ever seen.

Scrawled upon the linoleum waitress-only bathroom, in fresh blood, were the words: Angel's Back.
