The Prom: Chapter 2 - Angel

by Chelle

They didn't have proms when I was young. Sure, they had balls and cotillions for socialites, and aristocracy. Now things are different, brightly decorated gymnasiums, loud music, hundreds of bodies swaying together in formal wear as a mirrored ball slowly rotates overhead. This is normalcy at its finest for young ladies these days. I owe her that. I owe her a night of dancing and being what she is. A kid.

I watched from the back of the room as a kid announced the prom court, and gave out awards of some kind. They even gave my Buffy an award.
"Class Protector." If they only knew. I never knew that people, especially this young, were aware enough to appreciate the people who offered them everything they had. I admit that I was touched by their kindness. Even more so, I was touched by the beauty of a girl that I had come to see.

"I never thought you would come." she says as I approach her. She is so beautiful. She shines from head to toe, a stunning dress, her hair pinned back delicately. Her skin glows, picking up shades of red and blue from the flashing lights. Am I really going to leave this girl behind?

"It's a big night. I didn't want to miss it. It's just tonight. It doesn't mean that I ..." I say, more for myself than her. She knows, her heart still aches from it. If mine could beat, it would have stopped already. She is the only life left in this unlife.

"I know. I mean, I understand." She interrupts me. I should thank her for that; the words just didn't want to be said.

"Dance with me?" She accepts without a word, and just takes my hand. I pull her close, and the world disappears. Her head fits perfectly on my shoulder, her hand is tucked nicely between my own fingers. She fits me perfectly.

We sway together, to the soft music, and the dimming lights. Our last dance. I'm leaving her, this girl who has given me so much. After this dance, all that will be left is to go; to leave her and the past three years behind. To pretend that it doesn't kill me to turn and walk away from her.

Please, God, don't let this dance end.
