Dream come true: Chapter 9
by pagan pylea princess
Chapter 9
Both were badly beaten over the next few minutes. Spike had barely been able to look toward Buffy. He didn’t want to see her being tortured after all, but now he looked toward her. She smiled at him, but he knew she was badly hurt.
“We didn’t have to do much.” James spoke up, twirling a dagger that he’d used to stab Spike with several times.
“We just fuelled it off your insecurities. Your fears of each other.”
It suddenly hit Buffy and she shut her eyes.
“The first one was Spike, afraid his own past was getting in the way of the relationship…”
Buffy looked to Spike who seemed to have caught on as well.
“Second, both of you afraid you’d have to kill each other.” James grinned and twirled his dagger, “Spike’s dream of Angel was his insecurities that Angel knew you better than he did.” He said addressing Buffy. “The forth was the fact that the first time you met, each wanted each other’s head. And the fifth.”
James grinned and knelt beside Spike. “Now that was a delight!” he laughed a little. “His fear that the relationship means nothing to you. As soon as Angel turned up it would be over, no matter what he did. He’d lose control and something inside would turn around and kill the woman he loved. The soul, humanity – wouldn’t cure him. He’d still be a murderer.”
There was a silence. Buffy stared quietly at Spike who was sobbing a little. He was a lot more beaten up than she, and she figured this was some kind of payback.
Then, breaking the silence, James plunged the knife again into Spike’s stomach and he cried out in pain. Suddenly, tears came to Buffy’s eyes and she began to sob. But she watched closely and saw a flicker on Spike’s hidden face. Suddenly he looked up, and there was anger burning in his eyes. She’d seen it before.
“Bastard” he muttered.
James turned round, “what?” he seemed surprised.
Without looking at her he spoke with a sly grin on his face.
“Buffy…” he spoke as though he expected her to do something.
She lifted her head from its solemn position as he turned and looked at her. Without having to say a word she knew what he wanted her to do and he winked. She smiled.
Both James and Dru had gotten nervy, and he had stood up confused.
Then he looked to Buffy.
Who began to sing.
“Early one morning, just as the sun was rising…”
James frowned and Drusilla giggled insanely. The latter turned to Spike who had seemed to be fighting something.
“…I heard a young maid sing in the valley below…”
“Dru… what’s going on?” He asked a little more nervous. She’d gone quiet now and knew something was up.
“Spike?”
“…Oh don’t deceive me, oh never leave me…”
But Spike was beginning to change, and Dru knew it. She whimpered.
“…how could you use a poor maiden so?”
Buffy finished and winced as she knew what was coming. She remembered it from her basement where he hadn’t been able to escape from the chains. But she knew these were weaker.
He roared and growled viciously as he switched from human to demon face. In a moment he’d stood and started straining on his chains, lunging for the two vampires who’d tried to move out of the way.
Still snarling and growling he managed to break free and went after James, who was desperately trying to think of a spell to help them.
Spike hit out and got the guy across the face. He tore and scratched and the guy shrieked out in pain, before going limp.
Then Spike turned on Dru, who’d vamped herself. She put up a finger and wagged it.
“No!” she said sternly, “bad dog!”
But Spike merely batted her across the room. He chased after her, picked her up and threw her at the ground feet away. She whimpered and cowered.
He then turned and lunged for Buffy, who covered her head quickly with her arms, but he grabbed hold of her chains instead and yanked her free, taking them and spinning them to beat their opponents with. But when he turned back to them, Buffy had already gotten to her feet and whipped a stake from her back pocket, slamming it into James’ chest. James woke suddenly; his mouth formed an “O” of surprised and Buffy smiled.
“Slayer – 1. Vampire – Zero.”
And with that he dusted instantly.
“Now let’s make it two-nil” she said turning back to Dru and Spike. But when she did so, only Spike stood in front of her. The door to the cell was wide open and Dru had scrambled away.
“Damn it.” Buffy muttered angrily. But she frowned, slightly worried when Spike she realised, still in full vamp mode, was glaring at her hungrily. He snarled under his breath and Buffy held up her hands slowly.
“Spike…?” she said, breathing heavily in her terror.
He was grinning maliciously and running his tongue over his fangs in anticipation.
He’d been taken over completely.
“Spike, don’t…”
But he suddenly charged toward her, viciously. Tears spilled down her cheeks as she realised what had to be done. Buffy flinched and held up her stake readily, shutting her eyes; terrified she had to do it.
There was a sudden “thunk” sound and Spike stopped in his tracks. Buffy opened her eyes carefully and looked up.
Spike wavered unsteadily a moment on his feet looking dazed, like he was drunk. Then he passed out and collapsed to the ground and Buffy noticed a dart sticking out of his back.
Buffy looked up and saw Willow in the doorway wielding a tranquilliser gun, worry and shock on her face. She looked back at her best friend and smiled weakly, then looked to the sleeping vampire.
“Mild sedative. Should keep him down a while.” The Wicca spoke. Buffy saw Faith behind her with her fists up, ready to fight, followed by Giles who carried a battle-axe.
“Havin fun B?” Faith asked, out of breath.
Buffy simply sighed.
