I Swear: Prologue-the new kid

Prologue

Sunnydale California, 1994

8-year-old Buffy Summers was bouncing around her best friend, Willow Rosenberg's, bedroom, singing into her hairbrush. Willow was trailing along with Buffy and Cordelia Chase was close behind. They all stopped at the same time and turned towards their stuffed animals. Buffy sang to Mr.Gordo, Willow to Hugh Smenklefish, and Cordy to Fluffy.

They all sang in unison, "I swear by the moon and the stars in the sky, and I swear like the shadow that's by your side. I see the questions in your eyes. I know what's weighing on your mind. You can be sure I know my part. Cause I stand beside you through the years. You'll only cry those happy tears, and though I make mistakes. I'll never break your heart."

Buffy went over to Willow's Hello Kitty CD player and turned it up a couple notches. All three rambunctious girls began to run around the room again. They were having their weekly sleepover. They had just started this tradition about a month ago, but it seemed to be going well. One weekend they would be at Willow's, than Buffy's, than Cordy's.

"And I swear, by the moon and the stars in the sky, I'll be there. I swear like the shadow that's by your side, I'll be there. For better or worse. Til death do us part. I'll love you with every beat of my heart, and I swear."

"I'll give you everything I can. I'll build your dreams with these two hands. We'll hang some memories on the wall and when just the two of us are there. You won't have to ask if I still care, cause as the time turns the page, my love won't age at all."

Buffy, Willow, and Cordy fell onto Willow's bed and started to sing to the ceiling. "And I swear, by the moon and the stars in the sky, I'll be there. I swear like the shadow that's by your side, I'll be there. For better or worse. Til death do us part. I'll love you with every beat of my heart, and I swear. The girls fell into a fit of laughter.

The next day at school

The girls had class with their friend Xander Harris. They had met the first day of school and had a lot of fun together. They always played tag at recess. It was the middle of the year, so Xander pretty much knew everything about the girls and vice versa. But, today was different. Today they were getting a new student. Mrs. Carpenter had told them yesterday and everyone was anxious to met the boy. Mrs. Carpenter had said it was a boy, which upsetted Buffy, Willow, and Cordy because they wanted to have another member to their group. Xander informed them that they should still be nice and that's what the girls planned to do.

A boy, their age, with scruffy brown hair walked in. He had glasses too. To Buffy, he looked interesting, like he would be fun to meet. But, by the sigh Cordy let out, Buffy didn't think Cordy thought so. Right at that moment the recess bell rang and everyone ran outside, including Mrs. Carpenter. The boy just stood there and Buffy walked up to him.

"I'm Buffy," she greeted.

"I'm William," he responded.

There was a brief silence.

"So...you wanna go to recess?" Buffy asked.

William looked up and smiled. "Okay."
