Legacy: Prologue

This story is written for the purpose of entertainment only. I gain nothing from its posting. Joss Whedon owns all Buffy and Co. I claim any and all unfamiliar characters. They may not be used without my permission. (Don't sue me, it would be a waste of time and energy as I have nothing save my story ideas.)

Prologue
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The night sky over the small suburban town of Sunnydale was much darker than usual. Its ebony starkness was a backdrop for the stars that burned vainly in the heavens. They were weak competitors for the crescent moon that hung on the horizon.
Far below, on the outskirts of town, a sleek black car pulled up and the passenger door swung open. A slender female figure stepped out wearing black boots that came to her knees, a short black skirt, and a black leather jacket over a dark silver tank top. Her shoulder length blond-brown hair framed her face and haunted eyes. She stared at the forbidding buildings that loomed a few yards away. The bad side of town.
Inside the vehicle, a man with worried blue eyes tapped the steering wheel nervously. "Are you sure you want to go through with this, Eden? You can still go home with me. You know that don't you?"
The young woman nodded as she turned towards him. "I know. I also know that if I don't do this, there's a chance that there won't be a home to go to." The driver went pale at her words. Eden didn't notice though as she fished a key out of her jacket pocket then went and opened the trunk. She retrieved a medium-sized duffel bag and an old backpack. The latter's contents clanked quietly.
Eden slammed the trunk closed then stood beside the passenger door once more. "Did I forget anything?" She asked the man.
The man held up a small wallet stuffed with cash and a small black box. "These are yours." She snatched up the wallet but picked up the box hesitantly."Its for good luck and protection." The man told her, indicating the box. She opened it slowly to find a silver cross and chain nestled on a mound of black velvet. "Your father asked that I not give it to you until you needed it." He stared at the cross and then at her. "I thought that now would be a good time for you to have it. Its your legacy."
She snapped the box closed. "My legacy?" She echoed softly."A legacy that I may never pass on. You should keep it." Eden tried to give it back to him but he refused to take it. She ended up putting it in her pocket.
"If you do your duty correctly, Eden, you will not only pass it on but you might live to see your grandchild recieve it." He smiled encouragingly. "Come here." He held out his arms and Eden put her things down to hug him goodbye. He placed a brotherly kiss on her forehead. "Take care, promise?"
"I promise." She said and got out of the car. "Tell Dad I love him and not to worry. I'll be ok." He nodded and she slammed the door shut.
Eden watched as the car peeled away, executed a quick U-turn and disappeared into the darkness. She sighed, picked up her bags, and headed into town.
