"What?!" It was a few days later and Vera was on her cell phone with Spike. The past few days had been tense. There was no vampiric activity to speak of and the nights have been strangely clouded over with a light fog, adding to the mood of desperate anticipation.
"When?.. What the fucking hell do you mean 'now'?... Who the hell is going? Fuck... This just gets worse and worse... How far along is she?... No! ...Well, try again! ... You can't let this happen! ...Just do whatever it takes to slow them down! ... I don't care if they find out that you can walk around a little bit! ... Just stop them!"
Vera hung up on Spike and turned her attention to the group. She shook her head in disappointment and stared awkwardly down at the tiled library floor. Giles walked over to her, put a hand on her shoulder, and directed her to a chair. Vera sank down, her gaze still lingering on the floor. With a sigh, she looked up at the group, only to be greeted with gasps of shock. Buffy was the first to speak.
"How did you do that?"
Willow chimed in, "Your eyes, they're glowing!"
Xander added "They're this funky blue color, not like your usual color." Oz and Cordelia nodded in agreement. Vera's frown lifted marginally.
"When immortals feel a strong emotion, their eyes start to glow. And, well, depending on the immortal's personality, their eyes glow a different color for each emotion." The group all nodded knowledgeably and waited for Vera to say what Spike told her.
Their patience was rewarded when Vera finally looked up and began. "Saran is going to transport three vampires and herself to the immortal realm in about an hour. Anyone care to guess who are the chosen ones?"
"Drusilla?" Cordelia looked at Vera, waiting for an answer. Vera nodded. "Next guess?" Oz voiced his guess. "Spike?" And Vera nodded again. "Any one want the last guess?" Buffy's voice answered. "Angel, they're taking Angel."
"Yup, and we have until midnight to stop them all." One by one, Watcher, Slayer, and Slayerettes all looked at each other, wondering who would ask the question. Finally, Xander broke the silence by clearing his throat. "Um...How do we stop them?" Vera looked at him in shock.
"We? Xander, I can't let you, Willow, Cordelia, or Oz get into this. It's too dangerous for you guys, same for you Giles."
"No," Willow's voice sounded with a hard edge. "If they get across, we can consider our world dead, done, and dying. We live here. This is our home. We are not going to sit around while you and Buffy risk your lives. We're going." One by one, all the others nodded in agreement. Vera sighed.
"Well, I guess we can't stop you, so I guess the only thing we can do is help you, so you won't get hurt. I'd better get started. Hold on, I will be right back."
Vera ran into Giles' office and came back out, carrying a burlap sack. She dropped this at her feet when she reached the group.
"In this sack are a few things that, hopefully, will help you guys out a little bit. I was planning to give you guys all of this when I left to thank you guys for being so nice to me." Vera reached into the sack and brought out a crystal ball. This she handed to Willow, saying "I heard that you were practicing some spells and such. This will help you in spells that require a lot of power, and you can also look for things." Willow hugged the immortal gratefully and started to examine her gift. Next Vera brought out two long bows. They were slim, elegant, and powerfully built. She handed a bow to Xander and Cordelia saying that they both have sharp eyes and that they could put their gifts to good use. She also handed them a handful of arrows.
"These never break, and after hitting their mark, they return to you, so you will only need a few. And now, the werewolf, what can I give to you? Oh, I know!" Out of the burlap sack came a ring. It was a simple, wide, silver band engraved with the images of a pack of wolves running, one after the other. This Vera put on his left index finger. "This gives you control over your transformations. You will still go through your monthly stages as a werewolf, but this will enable you to transform into your other half whenever you want to. Giles, by the end of all of this, I will have a full set of the 'Codex' shipped to you. Buffy, there is nothing that I can give you except for the soul of your Angel, but it is not my place to do so, so all I can give you is the right to ask anything you wish of me when this blows over. Now, we have to get to that mansion."
