is loosely based on the "Call of Cthulhu" role-playing game
(copyright Chaosium Inc.) and the book "Encyclopedia Cthulhiana" by
Daniel Harms. SAVE is based on the organization in the Chill
Roleplaying game (copyright Mayfair Games Inc.) and the earlier
version of the game (copyright Pacesetter, Ltd.). The character
of Hector Gonzales is loosely based on a sample character in the
Mayfair version of Chill. The character of Melissa Johnson is my
own invention.
April 3: Sunnydale
The group gathered at Buffy's house the evening after the ceremony.
Once everyone had arrived, Melissa announced "Nearly as we can
determine, Chorazin has completely disappeared. The Shatterers
believe he has been destroyed. They've already left Sunnydale."
Giles asked "Can either of you stay until graduation? We could use
your help against the Mayor."
Melissa replied "I doubt it. When is graduation?"
Giles answered "May 20."
Hector and Melissa both shook their heads. He said "Even if SAVE
would let me, I have to get back to Los Angeles."
Melissa added "The Watcher's Council will find out about our presence
here eventually and file a formal protest. I won't be able to stay
here even unofficially for that long."
Wesley remarked "I'm afraid I'm going to have to file a report soon.
I've held off until now on the pretext that the situation was still
developing. I suspect you're right about the likely reaction."
Melissa glanced at Wesley "I can stay a few more days, just to make
sure we've tied up loose ends. After that I will have to leave. I'm
not sure I'd have been that much help, anyway. SAVE doesn't have
much experience in dealing with Ascensions. One of the drawbacks of
being a relatively young organization."
She smiled "From what I've seen, you'll figure something out. You
have a good balance of strengths, and you work well together, when
you decide to."
Melissa paused and was suddenly deep in thought. Giles asked "What
is it?"
Melissa explained "Something I realized about May 20. Orthodox
Easter is a week later than Western Easter this year which moves the
whole calendar forward a week. Which means that May 20 is the
Orthodox Ascension Day."
Willow exclaimed "The WHAT?"
Melissa replied "Orthodox Ascension Day. A very different kind of
Ascension, of course. But the Mayor may be taking advantage of
magical resonances. Or displaying his sense of humor."
She paused again "So does anyone else have anything to report?"
When no one answered, she continued "Then I only have one more
question. Which toppings does everyone want on the pizzas?"
