"Are you sure about this Giles? Absolutely positive?" Buffy asked her watcher with a glare on her face. "I'm positive Buffy. I've performed all the tests, contacted the council, everything. I'm sorry Buffy, but Dawn is the new slayer." Buffy scowled. "Dammit. What the hell was Faith thinking, going and letting herself get killed. Bitch. We're not telling Dawn. She can't know. I can take care of the slaying myself. Let her live a normal life, I will not let her become like me." Buffy was furious, but Giles just shook his head. "It's not you're choice Buffy. It's Dawn's, and sooner or later she'll figure it out. She'll discover her strength, and she'll know. Better to tell her now then let her discover it on her own. Knowing her she'll decided to go patrolling all on her own, without any kind of training." Giles gently laid a hand on Buffy's arm. She shook it off angrily, pouting, even though she understood what Giles was saying, and knew he was right. "Fine. I'll tell her."
"Hey Dawnie, you home?" Buffy called out when she arrived home later that afternoon. "Down here." Dawn replied from the basement. Buffy followed the sound of her sister's voice and headed down the basement stairs. "Watcha doin?" she asked Dawn, who was going through one of her mom's multiple boxes of junk. "Spring Cleaning. I thought we should make room for mom's stuff, now that she's gone." Dawn's voice choked on the last words, and her eyes glittered with unshed tears. Buffy sank to the floor and embraced her sister, hugging the girl tightly as Dawn's body shook with the force of her sobs, and allowed a few tears of her own to fall. After the last of their tears were shed and the sisters were sitting comfortably in their living room with mugs of hot cocoa and the little marshmallows Spike was so fond of, Dawn asked, "What did you want to talk to me about?" Buffy looked at her sister gravely. "Faith's dead." Dawn's gaze hardened, "So." She still hadn't forgiven the other Slayer for all she'd done. First kidnapping Willow, then trying to kill Angel, holding her and her mom at knife point, switching bodies with Buffy...the list went on and on. Dawn was adult enough to know that Faith had tried to atone for her sins, but still young enough to not be able to bring herself to forgive her. "So that means another Slayer's been called." Buffy began slowly, and Dawn interrupted with another snide comment, "Is this one crazy too?" "Well I sometimes think so, but that’s not the point Dawn, the point is that the new Slayer is you." Buffy answered quietly. "What?" Dawn asked, sure she had heard wrong. "She's you. You've been called Dawn, you're the new Slayer." Dawn's eyes widened in shocked disbelief. "How-?" she began, and then promptly fainted.
Something seriously stank. Dawn opened her eyes and saw her sister waving a bottle of what looked like smelling salts under her nose. "What happened?" she asked, and then it all came back. She sat up and looked at her sister and they sat in an awkward silence for what felt like an eternity, before they both opened their mouth to speak. "How are you-?" "What do I-?" they laughed and Dawn motioned for Buffy to speak first. "How are you feeling?" she asked. "Okay I guess. Confused. What do I do now?" she answered. "What I did. You start training. Probably with me and Spike since Giles is so old. You can do all the booky stuff with him. Maybe you'll even get a Slayers handbook. Giles has called a Scooby meeting for tomorrow; I guess we'll figure it all out then. In the meantime, would you like to go on patrol with me tonight?" Dawn nodded. "That would be cool." Buffy stood up. "Okay then. Get dressed and meet me downstairs."
Buffy's hands shook as she buttoned her shirt. She was terrified, she realized. Her baby sister was going to have to grow up now. Buffy couldn't protect her from the Big Bad's of the world anymore; because it was her little sisters job to help kill them. When her mom had died, Buffy had made a vow to herself, that she would do everything in her power to protect Dawn from all the hurt and pain in the world. Now she realized she couldn't. And that scared the hell out of her.
Dawn was waiting for Buffy when she finally got downstairs. Buffy handed her sister a few stakes, a cross and a bottle of holy water to put in her purse, and put some in her own. "Ready?" she asked. Dawn nodded and the sisters were on their way.
Buffy kicked the vamp in front of her in the head, and then punched the staked through its heart. Then watched her sister mimic her movements, perfectly. No sooner had she dusted that vamp than another was upon her. Buffy watched in a state of awe, as her little sister quickly dispatched that one, then moved on to another, and another. Unfortunately, a distracted Slayer was a dead one, or a kidnapped one in Buffy's case. Before she knew what was happening, Buffy's body had gone numb, and she lost consciousness as she was carried out of the cemetery by a vamp that looked vaguely familiar. Dawn dusted the last of the vamps, and then turned around expecting to see her sister waiting for her. But there was nothing but darkness. "Buffy?" Dawn called out, then her eyes fell to her sisters little black purse, and the white cloth that had fallen on it, and she creamed. "BUFFY!!!"
