Giles exited the computer room rather awkwardly, seeing as he didn’t really want to leave Ms. Calendar. As he stumbled down the hallway towards the library, he scolded himself for staying so late. Buffy would be anxious.
But before Giles could get within sight of the library, something very hard hit him soundly on the head. He slumped to the floor, unconscious.
"Sorry about that, old man," said a voice as Giles was carried off, "but I’ve waited long enough."

THWACK! WHUMP! POW! THWACK!
Buffy had found a punching dummy in Giles’ office and was using it as a replacement.
Except, Giles usually didn’t get that good a workout.
Willow continued to surf prophecy webpages and technopagan bulletin boards. So far, she had found absolutely nothing. But she had learned some interesting things about animal possession…then moved on. She didn’t need to be distracted.
Xander was out cold with his head on the table, snoring. A small puddle of drool had formed under his wide-open mouth. Next to his hand on the table was an unsheathed pocket knife. Under his other hand on the floor was an unfinished stake. Under the table was one wood shaving.
"Where" THWACK! "the" POW! "hell" SMACK! "is" WHUMP! "Giles?" CRACK! POW! THUD! After a rapid succession of hits, the sturdy dummy gave in to the assault and joined the stake on the floor.
Wiping her forehead with her sleeve, Buffy walked over to the computer and collapsed into a nearby chair.
Willow barely noticed her, too engrossed in her search for information. It didn’t take her long, though, to give up. "Giles’ right," she said, "there’s too many possibilities, Buffy." Willow grimaced at the screen, then shut the computer down.
"’Too many possibilities’! Too many possibilities could make me dead!" Buffy started to rant. "Where’s Giles when I need him?" she cried.
Willow shrugged. "I don’t know, Buffy. Just…be careful."
Xander snored.

Giles woke chained to a wall by his hands and feet. The Ripper in him burst out, yanking and struggling against the chains that held him flat. In the end, Giles gave up.
"I see you’ve awakened, Mr. Giles. All the better. I’ve been playing games with your slayer for far too long. The vampires have failed in their duty, and now it’s my turn at last. And lucky you; you get to watch Buffy die." The voice was cold and relentless.
"W-who are you?" Giles said, his voice scratchy and dry. A figure stepped from the surrounding shadows next to him.
"Your worst nightmare, ripper!" Giles’ captor cackled.
Giles gasped. "You!"

The vamp hit the ground at Buffy’s feet. "Nice shot, Xander!" she called out as she thrust the stake cleanly through the vamp’s heart. The dust was still settling when the next wave hit them.
"Boy, you people sure are dirty. Maybe you should take a bath!" Buffy uncorked a bottle of Holy water and splashed it on the vamps’ faces. As they clawed at their faces in pain, Buffy easily staked two of them. The other one managed to run away.
Xander rotted up to Buffy, huffing and puffing. "Wow. And I thought I couldn’t hit anyone like that. Cool," he panted.
Angel darted towards Buffy from behind a tree. "They’re gone. I think they’re done for tonight," he said, looking straight at Buffy. She took the hint.
"Xander, go see if Willow’s okay. I’ll finish patrol, okay?" she waved him off. He looked at her reluctantly, then turned and left the cemetery.
As soon as Buffy was sure that Xander had gone, she turned back to Angel. "Now I know something’s going on. So," she said, not to subtly, "what do *you* know about all of this?"
Sincerity covered his face as he looked at her. "Actually, Buffy, I don’t know much. I’ve only heard rumors…and they speak in French. I can’t do much, since I don’t speak French." Angel shrugged.
Buffy mumbled something under her breath, then pressed her body close to Angel’s. As he wrapped his arms around her, she sighed. "Another day, another night, another monster. And I had thought it was quiet, too." She closed her eyes.
"I know something’s coming, Buff," assured Angel, "I just don’t know what."
