Part One

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was through the computer hacker's intervention that Angel had propositioned her for a coffee date. She smiled as she recalled the vampire's suggestion, noting that it was among the most interesting pick-up lines that she had ever heard. she thought, sighing to herself as she entered sociology class the next day. For the life of her, Buffy could not figure out why Willow wasn't getting a fair deal in the romance department. Sure, the high school atomosphere didn't necessarly contrbute to the postive portrayals of indepedent types, yet this was so unfair. The fact that Cordelia could get a date anyday of the week, while not necessarily being very nice or smart, bespoke volumes about high school. She could not wait to get out of high school and move on to college, yet her lack of a credible GPA forbade her from graduating early. , she thought as she found herself dozing off, the teacher's voice droning off in the background.

While she did enjoy the class, her perpetualy busy schedule created occasional burn out. On top of this, her concetration was impaired by the lack of morning caffenation. Buffy thought, struggling to digest the notes on agrarian vs. instrial societies. Despite her present state, Buffy managed to overhear a portion of Mr. Roberts discussion regarding life in agrarian societes. She silently giggled as her instructor lammented the abscene of any living person from that era , she thought, a wide grin spreading across her face. Apparently Mr Roberts had decided to take a break, because he was now stading beside her, asking if there was anything wrong. Used to seeing her exhausted, he had grown incredibly suspicous with her sudden chage in persoality. While she could certainly understand her teacher's point of view, Buffy felt that he was taking things a little too far. While his intentions were undoubltey good, Buffy was not in the mood to face the principal today. Well aware of his acute dislike for anything that suggested a departure from coformity and free thought, she was oe of his least favirote people. As it was, she had enough problems in her life without having to encounter additional ones. Initaly put off by the orgiinal principal durring enrollment, she realy wished that he had not been devoured by hyenas In truth, school was not her problem, it was just the person runing Sunnydale that agravated her. Worse yet, her mom would probaly get contacted.

Having of idea of her Daughter's secret idenity, Joyce Summers was naturaky inclined to belive that her dauughter's behavior was the result of bad parenting, and spoiled behavior, unaware of the dangerous realites that faced her daughter on a contiual basis. Buffy reasoned as she tried to understand her mom for the umpteenth time. She knew tht the truth would evetualy have to come out, but when would be the righ time for such an announcment? On top of that, it would be difficult to explain about Angel---she did not know how she was ever gong to do so. While there would be the possbity of acceptance, her mom was also notorious for excessvely worrying about her only child. she muttered as she sat in the princpals office awaitng her "trial" While her dad had noticed her worry, mom was still conviced that Buffy enjoyed getting herself in trouble. In all actuality, slaying was akin to takng ou the garbage or mowing the lawn, just somethig that had to be done whether or not it was liked. Furthermore, she did not derive pleasure from slaying, unlike Angel who exhibited an incredible amount of hatred towards them, although he realy did have every right to do so. Buffy imagned that she would be incredibly angered if she found herself in a simmilar sittuation, recalling the night when she had found her mom unconcious and bleeding on the kitchen floor---covinced that Angel had done such a horrible thing. Yet, despite this diffrence in teqnique, they were undeniably bound by devotion to fight the forces of darkness, perhaps falling in love with one another along the way.
