The TRUTH: Chapter One

Disclaimer: Buffy and friends (meaning: Giles, Willow, Xander, Angel, Oz, Ethan, even Buffy’s mom and Principal Snyder, do not belong to us, which you probably oughta know by now. They belong to Josh Whedon, Mutant Enemy Productions, and the dubba dubba dubba dubba WB. We’re simply borrowing them to tell a lovely story to you lovely non-lawsuit type people out there. In some cases, (to be cute, funny, and at times exceptionally true to the show,) we have mixed and/or altered direct quotes from the show. These too, along with some plot lines, and just about all characters come from the zany mind of the man we all love and fear, Joss Whedon.

Buffy was walking stealthily through the regular short-cut home through the cemetery, when she felt a presence nearby. "It’s late, I’m tired, I don’t want to play games. Show yourself."

"The truth is, Slayer, I have no fight with you."

Buffy tried to determine where the voice was coming from, but there was an echo, and it appeared to come from everywhere at once.

"You’re a vampire, I’m a Vampire Slayer. It’s my sacred duty to have a fight with you."

"I know. Most vampires seem to feel the same way. Rather infantile if you ask me."

Buffy kept pivoting in her fighting stance but still couldn’t find the vampire. "So if you’re not here to fight, why are you here? And why don’t you show yourself?"

"I’ll answer the second question first. I’m afraid of you, Slayer. Often when vampires meet Slayers, they die. I have a strong problem with that. Call it a fixation, but I actually enjoy living."

"At the price of killing innocent lives? Your kind should be afraid of me. You’re a plague of mankind. A demon, a parasite."

The hidden vampire continued seemingly ignoring her. "As for the first question, I’m here to talk, and I’m hoping you’ll listen."

"Oh, I’m sure. A cute peaceful vampire who’s just misunderstood."

"Now who’s the barbaric unreasonable demon who wants nothing more than to fight and kill?"

thought Buffy. Trying to be trusting and understanding, she lowered her fighting stance and dropped the wooden stake out of her pocket. "Alright, I’m unarmed, alone, and I don’t know where you are. I’d say I’m trusting you."

A vampire Buffy had never seen before stepped out of hiding a fair distance away. "I give you my word that I too am alone and unarmed, except for the obvious of course, but unfortunately I can’t help that. You could always pick up your stake and throw it at me; I’ve seen your aim. I’ll say what I want to say, then go about my business and leave you to yours, if that’s what you choose."

< A vampire’s word of honor. That and a dollar will get you seventy-five cents. > "Alright, I accept. So let’s get chatty. What do have to say to me?" Buffy answered, expecting a cryptic warning or something of the same.

"About your comment. You are merely under the impression of millions of years of human lore. Have you or your race ever stopped to get the vampires’ point of view?"

"If I did, I’d be dead. Vampires are evil."

"What is Evil? What is it about Vampires that you believe to be evil? Yes it’s true, Spike and most others like me are in my definition of evil, creature of the night behavior- meanness, cruelty, relentless... Can you say that none of your kind are not? That humans are a perfect race? That nowhere do you see humans that have these character flaws and are never punished?"

"You’re a murderer. You kill innocent people."

"Again, I say, are humans any different? Nature is a cruel thing, Slayer. It always has been. All life on this planet with the exception of plants must kill in order to live. However with humans it is a different story. You kill for food, for revenge, for sport."

"No, I can’t deny we aren’t perfect, or even that we’re all good or peaceful."

"In Nature, everything has a check. The rabbit eats the plant. The wolf eats the rabbit. Humans eat cattle, pork, fish and poultry. Vampires prey on humans. The Slayer kills Vampires. Even while the demons prey upon the humans, they still overpopulate the earth, consume it’s resources, backing all other life out of the way, because you believe yourself to be the superior race."

"You say Vampires prey on humans, and I kill Vampires."

"That’s the big thing, isn’t it? Humans always kill for food. Vampires only need to kill only to reproduce. When we feed, we do not need to kill our victims. Sure, they’re a little out of it for awhile, weakened, slightly inconvenienced, but usually not dead. Humans become Vampires by choice. They want to become immortal, to have power."

"Power corrupts."

"Yes. You also have power. Will you be corrupted as well? Aren’t humans already a little corrupt to want this power, and immortality? Immortality alone can be a curse."

Buffy didn’t feel like listening anymore. She bent down for her stake. When she looked up again, the strange vampire was gone. Then she wondered. ‘Why did this particular once-human sign up with the vampires team?’

* * *
"Nice job," Spike said to Buffy’s vampire as he turned a corner into an alley. "That pack of lies you fed the Slayer will certainly get her off her game for awhile."

The vampire swung around and shoved Spike to a wall. "I didn’t lie."
