At Peace with Eachother: 2
by Spikes Queen
Buffy and Spike went downstairs later that night to go patrolling.
“Have a nice nap?” Dawn asked, as they entered the kitchen.
“Yes,” Buffy answered, simply.
Dawn smiled. “Good, because its been a while since either of you has gotten a good night’s sleep,” she said.
“How do you know we haven’t been sleeping?” Buffy asked.
“The two of you spend all hours of the night together on patrol. Spike has nightmares unless one of us is near him and Buffy, you haven’t slept since Spike moved out of your room after you rescued him. You guys feel better near each other. Doesn’t matter if you’re losing sleep over it,” Dawn said.
Buffy looked at Spike and held his gaze. “You told me the nightmares stopped,” she said, softly.
“I didn’t wanna bother you,” Spike said, honestly.
Buffy moved closer to him. “You’re never a bother. I know you’re at peace when I’m at your side,” she said. “No more keeping secrets from each other. We can make it through it. K?”
Spike smiled a little. “Deal. But why haven’t you been sleeping?” He asked.
Buffy bit her lip. “Because I’m lonely,” she whispered.
Dawn smiled. “See? That wasn’t so hard. Now go patrol, but don’t stay out too late,” she said, going upstairs.
Spike slid his hand into Buffy’s and they left.
On patrol, Buffy had just dusted a last vamp but Spike was nowhere to be seen. “Spike?” She called. “Very funny, Spike, but I don’t wanna play. I wanna go home and go to bed,” she said, in a playful voice. After a few seconds a feeling of dread came over her. “SPIKE!!”
“Buffy!” Came Spike’s helpless voice.
Buffy ran toward Spike’s voice. “Spike?! Where are you?”
“Buffy!” Came his pained voice.
Buffy closed her eyes and followed her instincts which led her to where Spike was struggling with a few people in masks.
She sprinted towards him and smashed her fist into everyone’s nose.
She helped her vampire to his feet and looked at his attackers.
“Finn, what do we do?” One of them asked.
“Riley?!” Buffy exclaimed.
“I’ll take it from here. Move out,” Riley commanded.
Buffy’s eyes flashed as Riley removed his mask. “What are you doing here Riley?” She asked.
“Working,” Riley said, looking at their joined hands in disgust.
“And what exactly do you do?” Buffy asked. “Spike wont fight humans unless I tell him too.”
“The chip shouldn’t be active anymore,” Riley said.
Buffy looked at Spike with questioning eyes. “They probably forgot to tell him,” she said, smiling. “I had the chip removed when it almost made his head explode.”
“You removed the chip?” Riley asked, with disbelief.
“He sounds like Rupert,” Spike said, chuckling softly.
Buffy cracked a smiled despite herself. “Anyway, I’m not stupid. You wouldn’t be working with a squadron that big. You guys are targeting Spike again. Give it up,” Buffy said, tiredly. “If anyone is going to be doing anything to him, its gunna be me.”
“When do you plan on doing something about him then?” Riley asked.
“I don’t,” Buffy growled. “After you abandoned me, he took care of me and my family. The list is endless for how much good he’s done for me and for Dawn. My best and worst of times included him. My mother died on the couch and I found her lying there. I might have treated him like shit but he didn’t stop trying to get close to me. Especially when she died. After I came bake from the grave, I used and abused him and he never turned me away. When I was in Heaven, he was here, going through the pain of losing me. He stayed and protected Dawn because he promised me he would and he loves her. Before I jumped off the tower, I knew Dawn was gunna be ok, because she had Spike. After I found out I could trust him with my life, we started to get close. The little piece of me he wanted, he was this close.” Makes a small space between her thumb and index finger. “To getting. But I died. I couldn’t help it. It was me or Dawn and I knew Dawn could live with out me. I knew I wouldn’t have been able to live without her. No matter how much comfort everyone gave me, no one could have made that kind of pain go away. So tell me Spike deserves to die after everything he’s done for me!”
Riley remained speechless, his mouth open in shock.
“That’s what I thought,” Buffy said, calmer now. “Spike and I have to go home, before Dawn starts to worry about us.”
Spike clutched Buffy’s hand as they walked back home, without a word form Riley.
Buffy was surprised, because by the time they arrived home, Spike hadn’t said a word. “Spike, you’re being awfully quiet.”
“Sorry,” Spike said, squeezing her hand. “Just thinking.”
Buffy smiled and kissed him softly. “Lets, go to bed and think,” she said, pulling him inside.
Spike followed her to her room and they slid into bed. It wasn’t long before they were sound asleep.
Dawn peeked in a few minutes later and smiled. They could finally be at peace with each other.
