Welcome to Sunnydale: Part Thirteen

Giles looked out at the group talking and laughing in his sitting room. His house had never been so full before. Ever since Nikki had moved in a few weeks ago his house had taken over from the library as their favourite hang-out.

But the truth was that Giles didn’t mind. He liked having Nikki around, maybe a little too much.

Then the talking and laughter stopped and he heard Nikki saying goodbye to everyone. She skipped into the kitchen and sat down opposite Giles. He looked up at her and smiled.

“You all seem to be getting on very well”, Giles noted.

“Yes, they’re great fun. Although at times I don’t know how Buffy does it - I don’t think I could handle being the chosen one and a teenage girl going to high school at the same time”.

“Well, Buffy is a very determined girl”, Giles stood up to put the kettle on.

“With a wonderful Watcher to help her”, Nikki added with a grin. “It must be very hard”.

“Yes”, Giles agreed. “But I think having good friends around helps her”.

“I suppose”, she laughed. “but I was actually talking about you. It must be hard on you, too. You didn’t pick this gig either, you were chosen”.

Giles looked at her kindly. Most people didn’t give much thought to the Watcher’s job. But then again Nikki wasn’t the same as most people. He had discovered that she was a lot more mature than her age would suggest. She was sweet and funny and kind. They spent many nights just talking about their lives. Giles would tell her about Jenny and she would tell him about her parents. He had never felt so comfortable around a person before - not even with Jenny, if he was honest with himself.

“Giles”, Nikki laughed, waving her arms on front of his face. “You were miles away”.

“Yes”, Giles busied himself with the tea. “just thinking about vampires and the likes”.

Nikki smiled and stood up. “Well I’ll leave you to your happy thoughts. I’m heading to bed”. She gave him a quick hug and was gone.
