Eloise Baker was able to put a pause on her grieving as she looked up into the eyes, no eye, of the tall young man who was looking down at her. Her late husband’s family didn’t sport anyone so handsome, except her Ralph of course, and she was rather sure the pretty young girl on his arm was no relation either.
“We are very sorry for your loss, Mrs. Baker,” the young man said as he slid a business card into her hand, “but please, when the funeral is over and you would like to talk, call this number and my wife and I will be on our way.” Eloise looked down at the card,

When she looked up the two were gone. As the last of the crowd left and gave their condolences, Eloise looked back at the young Mexicans filling in her Ralph’s grave and whispers, “I should have gone first.” The long walk back to the car didn’t wind her as she thought back on the last three years. In ‘03 her cancer had almost eaten her whole, and life support was all that kept her alive. When suddenly her miracle happened and her body started fighting back. It had been a slow painful battle but it had been worth it for three more years with her husband.

They had enjoyed helping in the church with the nursery, vacation bible school, Christmas cantatas, anything that had to do with children. They had never been blessed with any of their own, so when the funeral home’s limo pulled up to her driveway she realized she would be alone for the first time in her 55 years. A tear slipped down her face as she dug into her purse for a house key and her hands brushed up against a lone business card. Once inside the lonely house Eloise picked up the phone…
