Chapter Two
Buffy didn’t want to let him go in case it was some kind of dream she was having. The look on her mother’s face proved that it was real, though. Joyce had never approved of Pike and had stated this on more then one occassion. She finally let go of him and smiled brightly at him. He grinned and said hello to Dawn. Dawn thought Pike was very neat, with his tattoos and tongue piercing. She waved and went over to her mother and started to complain. Normally Buffy would tell Dawn to shut up, but she practically drug Pike out onto the porch so they could talk. When they shut the front door, they sat down on the double swing on the porch. She immediately put her head on his shoulder and he put his arm around hers. She heard him sigh and listened for what he had to say.
“ I know I shouldn’t have come down today, but I couldn’t stay away. I pulled into your driveway this morning, and remembered that you weren’t there when stopped the ignition.” Buffy felt her eyes fill with tears, but she fought to keep them in check. She wasn’t really crying because of Pike, but because she no longer had the life she was used to and loved.
“ Oh, Pike this is a weird school! Dawn’s already made friends with the snobby in crowd and wants me to mingle as well. I can’t wait to graduate because then I’m right back in L.A. with you.” She felt him smile, which comforted.
“ I can’t wait for that either, you know. The gang send you their hello’s. Andy wanted to come down, but I wouldn’t let him.” Buffy smiled. Andy was one of her best friends, whom she’d known since Kindergarten.
“ Well, you’ll have to tell him that I miss him very much.” Pike nodded and then stood up.
“ Buffy, why don’t you just come back with me? You’re almost eighteen, so just transfer back, to hell with you parents!” Buffy looked down at her feet. If only things were that easy, she’d jump at the plan.
“ Pike, you know I can’t do that. My mom needs me right now, and she’d never agree to such a thing. I begged her to let me finish school at Hemery, but she refused. It’s just not fair, and I hate my father for it.” He rammed his hands through his hair, showing her just how frustrated he was.
“ I’m going nut not being able to see you, Buff. I was contemplating moving down here until you’re finished with school. My dad won’t give a shit if I transfer down here, then after graduation, we could get an apartment for college.” Buffy’s face completely lit up at his words.
“ That would be wonderful, Pike! I know you can’t really do it, but it’s a really awesome thing for you to say to me.” He sat back down and enveloped her in his embrace.
“ You just wait, Summers, I’ll find a way for us to be together again. You’re always going to be my girl.” Buffy couldn’t hold them back any longer, and she sobbed in his arms.

The next day at school, Buffy was really depressed. She’d had the best night ever with Pike, and then he’d had to leave. It was a tearful event, and she hated herself for showing him her weakness, but he didn’t seem to mind. When she was looking for her first period class, Willow stopped her, smiling.
“ Hey Buffy, how’s it going? Your first class is with me, and it’s back the other way. I didn’t want you to be late.” Buffy looked at the redheaded girl and smiled. She wasn’t used to being treated nice with the popular crowd.
“ Thanks so much, I was a little worried about that. It’s Math we’re going to, right?” Willow nodded at her.
“ I think it’s great that you’re in AP classes, all my friends think I’m a huge nerd. What can I say? I love to learn.” Buffy chuckled and followed the girl into the classroom. She handed the teacher her schedule and found a seat behind Willow. She pulled out the book she’d been given, and searched for a pencil. She’d known that Dawn had borrowed one, but she borrowed her only one? She was so going to kill her sister, she hated not being prepared for classes. She was about to give up and ask Willow, when she heard someone beside her clear their throat. She looked over and saw the most gorgeous person she’d ever laid eyes on...except for Pike...maybe.
“ Do you need a pencil? I’ve got an extra one you can borrow.” She smiled and took the pencil from his tanned hand. The guy was seriously built and tall. He had short very dark hair and chiseled face.
“ Thanks so much, my sister took mine.” He grinned at her.
“ Not a problem...I’m Angel by the way.” She let her eyes flicker over his form before speaking.
“ I’m Buffy, but I think we sort of met yesterday.” He nodded but couldn’t say anything because the class started. When the class was over, she went to hand the pencil back, but he told her to keep it.
The rest of the day went by pretty quickly for her, mostly because she was knew and was trying to catch up. When class was over, she waited out front for her sister, when a white haired boy walked up to her. He didn’t say anything to her at first, just kind of glanced her over. He turned around as if looking to see if anyone was watching, then glanced back at her. She was becoming immensely uncomfortable with his blatant stare, when he surprised and spoke to her.
“ You’re Buffy, aren’t you?” She glanced over at him, and recognized him from the group of people her sister had introduced to her.
“ Yes, I’m sorry I don’t remember your name.” He grinned.
“ You wouldn’t, you looked positively peeved yesterday. Tell the truth, you don’t look much better today. Well, I’m William Giles, but don’t ever call me William. I prefer to be called Spike.” She nodded and tried to appear sociable, but she didn’t much feel like talking. She glanced back down the hall and still didn’t see her sister anywhere. He seemed to get annoyed with her and said as much to her.
“ So tell me, what’s got your knickers in a twist? You don’t seem much up to making new friends, and red is dying to befriend you. Seeing someone who gets grades as good as she does, makes her drool.” Buffy realized right then that she was being snooty and apologized for it.
“ Look, I’m really sorry. It has nothing to do with you or your friends, I just don’t want to be here. I’m going to graduate in seven months, and I had to move away from friends. I’ve just...not been in a very good mood these past few days.” He nodded.
“ You got yourself a fellow then, huh? That who we saw you snuggled up to last night? Don’t get angry, the gang and I pass your house most every night to and from the Bronze. Angel wasn’t too happy about it, seems he got himself a crush.” Buffy felt her cheeks go warm at the mention of Angel.
“ Yes, that was my boyfriend down to visit me.” He moved just a little bit closer.
“ Can’t say as I blame him. A looker like you, you’d want to keep close tabs on. I take it from your surly mood that he had to go back to L.A. is it?” She nodded.
“ Yes...it was horrible...and I don’t know why I’m telling you this.” He grinned.
“ Sometimes it’s easier to talk to a complete stranger. Your mum works with my dad at the gallery. Good ol dad works there for some extra cash...he’s also our school librarian.” Buffy looked at him.
“ Mr. Giles is your father? I don’t know why I didn’t see it, I met him today when I was getting my books.” He nodded and looked down the hall.
“ Well here comes your sister with my girlfriend, Faith. Buffy turned towards his gaze and sure enough...there was Dawn taking her sweet time in moving along. When she finally reached her, she looked at Buffy and grinned.
“ I see you finally decided to meet and mingle, Buffy...good for you.” Buffy really wasn’t in the mood for Dawn’s antics, so she glared.
“ Shut up you little dwarf. We have to go, mom is wanting us to come home and help unpack.” Dawn ruffled her nose at the thought.
“ Exactly why I’m taking my time in leaving, Buffy.” Buffy smiled at Faith and Spike and grabbed her sister’s arm.
“ I told you, we have to leave. I’ll see you guys tomorrow. It was nice talking to you, Spike.” They both waved and turned around to greet Willow, a redheaded boy, and Angel. When they got in the car, Dawn screamed at Buffy.
“ I can’t believe you did that to me in front of them! What the hell is the matter with you anyway?!” Buffy turned her car and glared at her.
“ I told you to give mom a break, and what the hell are you doing? You’re acting like the spoiled little brat that you are. Now stop whining and buckle up.” She set off towards their house, but Dawn refused to speak to her the whole ride home.
