Desperate Acts: Part Fifteen

Cordelia twirled her pencil around, trying to suppress her yawn of boredom. It turned out she that she had History first period, and it was all she could do not to fall asleep at her desk from the droning of the ever-so dull Mr. Phillips.

Sneaking a glance over at the back of the class, she eyed the gorgeous frame of her beloved Xander, who looked just as bored as she did. She decided to write him a note asking him to meet her in the closet after class, for old time’s sake. Second period be damned, Xander was more important to her.

Xander,

Meet me at the utility closet after class. It’s really important. We so have to talk.

Cordy

She smiled to herself and folded up the note, scribbling Xander’s name on front. Shooting a quick glance at Mr. Phillips to make sure he wasn’t looking, she slipped the note to the person behind her.

“So does anyone know why Napoleon did what he did? Class?” Mr. Phillips scratched his balding head and looked around at the students, all in various stages of sleep. He harrumphed indignantly when he saw no hands being raised. His gaze fell on Cordelia Chase, and he smiled. Good old Cordelia. He could count on her to have an answer, couldn’t he? “Miss Chase?”

Cordelia’s head shot up, and she stared blankly at Mr. Phillips. “Huh?”

The class snickered. Mr. Phillips glared at them and he repeated his question. “Do you know why Napoleon invaded Egypt?”

She had no clue. History was never her best subject. “Um ... he wanted to see the pyramids?”

More snickers. The class had expected her to come up with the right answer. She always did. But it was nice to know that Cordy the Brain didn’t know everything. Mr. Phillips was just as surprised, and he looked at Cordelia balefully.

“No, Miss Chase, that is not the answer. Anyone else?” He looked around hopefully, but no one volunteered a response. Frowning, he threw up his arms in a gesture of surrender and turned to face the board. “I see no one has done their reading. We’ll just have to make that up tonight, now, won’t we?” He scribbled the pages and pages of assignment on the board, and the class groaned in protest. Cordelia grimaced, but dutifully wrote down the homework. That done, she glanced around to the back see if Xander had received her note. He was reading it now ... he saw her looking and grinned, gesturing excitedly at the note. She winked at him at him and nodded. Cordelia faced front again, a small smile playing on her lips.

She wouldn’t have been smiling if she knew that the note he had been reading was not hers. Her note was lying crumpled up in a ball on the floor. The note he was reading was Willow’s.

Xander,

Meet me at the utility closet after class. I broke up with Oz and I want us to make up ... you know what that means ...

The bell rang, and immediately the class began moving. Chairs were pushed back with a screech and loud conversation broke out as the mass of students scrambled up from their desks and ran out of the door. Cordelia made sure to take her time, wanting Xander to get to their spot before she did. It was all about making an entrance. She hummed tunelessly under her breath, clearly looking forward to their closet time. She smiled secretly to herself, then gathered all her things and strolled leisurely out the door and into the hall.

As she walked towards the utility closet, she ran through some possible lines in her head. Cordelia frowned.

Cordelia ran her fingers through her hair and sighed.

Cordelia paused and tried to collect her thoughts. Her heart started thumping nervously as she placed her hand on the doorknob. She took a deep breath and opened the door. And gasped, her hand going to her mouth in shock. Xander was in there all right. But he was kissing Willow.

... Love and Lotsa Kisses (and you can count on lotsa kisses!), Willow

Cordelia felt déjà vu sweep over her as she stared in shock at the pair making out in the closet. She felt all the blood drain from her face, and her eyes quickly became clouded with tears. Her heart constricted in pain as she watched the grisly scene in front of her. Xander and Willow, groping ... just like what happened before. She stifled a cry of distress and ran away, the clattering sound of her shoes soon fading away in the distance.

Willow smiled slyly against Xander’s mouth, having seen the look of betrayal on Cordelia’s face. Xander, his back having been to the door, pulled away suddenly and looked around in confusion.

“Did you hear something? Why is the door open?”

Dear, clueless Xander. Willow pasted on a wide-eyed look of innocence and raised her shoulders helplessly. “I think someone opened the door and saw us kissing, Xander! I am so embarrassed!” She hid her face in her hands, trying to hold in the laughter threatening to explode.

Xander patted her back awkwardly. “It’s okay, Willow. It’s not that bad. Sure, it’ll probably be all over school tomorrow, but the news would have come out sooner or later, right?” He smiled lovingly at Willow, who had lost all trace of humor at his words.

Despite all of her bluster and complaints, Willow really did love Oz, popularity or no popularity. If this ever got out, Oz would never forgive her! Now she looked at Xander in panic, trying to think up an excuse to get away.

“This was a mistake, Xander. I shouldn’t have ... we shouldn’t have ... I-I think I heard the bell. We’d better get to class.” She ran out of the closet, hoping to find Oz and explain before a distorted version of the story got to him somehow.

Xander stared after her, hurt. The thought that it had all been a joke crossed his mind, but he brushed it away quickly. Why would Willow lure him to the closet for a joke? he thought unhappily. He sighed, and exited the closet. Shutting the door behind him, he headed for his second class.
